Russia badly needs to find a new place in a new world rather than stir up memories from the Soviet or Tsarist period, just as Germany has done in the period since 1945 with chancellors Adenauer, Brandt, down to Merkel and president Gauck today. The world today is very different from the period when Merkel grew up in the German Democratic Republic and Putin lived as a KGB officer in Dresden, Germany. The India-Pakistan-Afghanistan issues are still framed in the old way in terms of communalism, cold war then and the war on terrorism now. These policies were a legacy of the colonial policies of an earlier empire designed to preserve foreign rule, with a policy of perpetuating divisions between communties on religious and other lines. Modernization, the spread of mass communications that makes possible the reduction of prejudice and division by assimilating different values and beliefs into acommon aspiration for progress and better living standards, and the spread of education, commerce, and technological progress, create the conditions that should put this behind us. Put behind us communalism, and the political and military structures of communal states. Pakistan needs to be transformed from a communal state with a military structure designed to preserve that state - resulting in conflicts with its neighbors- into a state that represents a community and a religion, but in all other ways seeks peaceful coexistence and economic integration with the rest of South Asia. A good example of this is Mexico with its own culture, language and religion (Spanish Catholicism), and Canada with its own bilingual French-English heritage and British political structures and allegiances, both arriving at an arrangement of peaceful coexistence and economic integration with the USA with its different political structures and culture and sporadic conflicts with Canada and Mexico. This has promoted the peaceful development of the North American region. The US involvement in the region can then be seen as a misguided effort that continued framing the region's differences in the old British way or in a cold war stereotyping, first with John Foster Dulles in the India-Pakistan conflicts, and then with Reagan in the Afghan anti-Soviet war. This has worked to exacerbate the conditions that led to slow progress in the drive for economic development, infrastructure building and modernization in all of South Asia. Just as in Europe, as in North America, the processes of economic development work best when a policy of inclusiveness and integration of different communities and people is followed. ...

With auto sales collapsing, initially for trucks and large vehicles in the face of gas prices at $4-5 per gallon, and the shift to fuel efficient small cars that the Detroit automakers failed to have in their product lineup, and in October 2008 with the credit crisis choking off credit to even credit worthy customers, GM is running out of cash for operations. The aftermath of the Lehman bankruptcy is to choke off credit to car buyers and to practically all companies. Sales declined 45% for GM in October over the prior year October. GM reported that it burned through $6.9 billion in cash in third quarter 2008, and ended the period with just $16.2 billion in cash reserves. Today GM made a honest assessment, saying "it will fall significantly short" of the cash needed to run its business in the first half of 2009. "GM's estimated liquidity during the remainder of 2008 will approach the minimal level necesssary to operate its business." Ford Motor said it burned through $7.7 billion in cash in the third quarter, leaving it with $18.9 billion at the end of Septemer, as its sales in October declined by over 30%. Ford's automotive business lost $2.7 billion in the third quarter....

Hyundai is benefitting from the popularity of small cars. Hyundai increased sales in June year over year by 14% when USA auto sales declined by 8%. Its Elantra compact sales went up by 69%, its Accent subcompact sales increased by 91% and sales of its midsize sedan Sonata went up by 24%, according to Autodata. Hyundai which was trying to go upscale with the sedan Azera and the Genesis which was designed to compete with Lexus, is now focussing on small cars and trying to increase its share of the market with smaller cars. It will introduce a new Elantra wagon for the USA this year, the first of about 6 new small car models it hopes to bring out in the next 5 years. Hyundai is also considering manufacturing the Elantra at a new plant in West Point, Georgia, which was previously going to make a pickup and a SUV for its affiliate Kia Motors. The popularity of its small cars and the weaker Korean currency are helping Hyundai post large operating earnings with estimate of $2.3 billion this year, up 25% on sales of $33.7 billion, up 11%, according to brokerage Korea Investment and Securities. Sales of Hyundai SUV's are suffering the same fate that other SUV's are facing, down 41% in June 2008....

How Martin Feldstein weighs the risks of inflation and of moral hazards in helping those who fueled the subprime crisis with their mistakes with the risks of a sharp downturn, and what thoughts he has on the issue of lowering rates just as the Bernbanke Fed prepares for its policy meeting September 18, 2007. He looks for a cut starting from the current 5.25% to 4.25% or even less depending on the situation as it evolves. Feldstein gives a measure for household wealth that will be lost and what will be lost in consumer spending as a result. His measure is for a 20% cumulative fall in house prices that would reduce household wealth by $4 trillion which would impact consumer spending by about $200 billion, thats about 5% consumers would spend more if they had that $4 trillion. This works out to about 1.5% of GDP which he suggests would tip the US economy into a recession. This is not counting the loss of access to spendable cash that the consumer has used for the last decade in terms of mortgage equity withdrawals which totaled $9 trillion this last decade and financed a lot of the sustained consumer spending, these mortgage equity withdrawals to finance spending would decline significantly in the new conditions. In addition with more defaults and falling prices in a vicious circle the process could accelerate quickly, further impairing the portfolios of banks and financial institutions causing some to collapse. ...

The Chinese market is shifting to more economical cars and to price conscious customers in China's growing middle cllass typicall making about $13000 a year. With the constant pressure to provide more value and better price China's local carmakers are willing to work with slim margins. The Chinese car makers are gaining market share and will continue to gain share in a very competitive price conscious market. In just one year from 2006 to the first 7 months of 2007 the Chineses carmakers increased their share from 26.4% to 30.6%. The Chinese carmakers include smaller makers in addition to the companies Cherry and Geely and these smaller carmakers are also gaining share. The Chinese companies are offering better equiped cars, more fashion and styling, and better prices. one example is a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV selling for $18500 versus a Hover SUV made by Great Wall Motor Company. The Hover SUV selling for $14500 than the comparable Santa Fe which this customer drove through the mountainous border of Sichuan with Tibet. What this also means for foreign carmakers is that there have to be price cuts to move product. The turnaround is huge with Howard Stringer's strategy or refocussing on the main electronics business on which Sony founded itself and thrived in the post war years. Because results were so poor before this the results are huge on digital cameras , new flat panel tvs, andand other consumer electronics except videogames unit. Sales at the electronics unit increased 21%, and operating profit up by $939 million, for 3rd quarter 2007. Stringer has shed most of the non core businesses including the life insurance unit and an online bank spun off 2 weeks ago for $3 billion in an IPO, and selling some semiconductor operations to Toshiba for $800 million last week. Also gone is Aibo, the robot dog. The battery overheating recalls charges are also behind Sony. And the Sony movie studio is making profits with popular movies. These are not reflected in the announced results for 3rd quarter 2007. About $50 billion of Sony's $70 billion in worldwide sales are from electronics. Sony has tieup with Samsung in tv's and this has helped it improve results in its tv business and collaborate to combine resources where needed. Its also investing in technology with a new type of tv screen 0.12 inches thick , enabled by an organic light emitting diode display. Losses continue to mount on the Playstation 3 with losses this year of $847million and more nimble companies like Nintendo have done better in this field. sales are from electronics...

The title of this BBC report is a misnomer as the content of the report is that India and the US are actively negotiating a Trade Agreement after some disagreements on Indian oil purchases from Russia bumped up from 2% before 2019 to about one third to 40% of its imports by 2024. This is being rapidly reversed and some estimates by consultants CLSA show India only made $2-3 billion from Russian discounted oil sales, a miniscule amount. On American interest in agricultural exports India can take in some products other than grain which it sees as important to feed 1 billion people and food security.  DJT says the "special relationship" between India and the US is important, and says "there's nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion". India has much bigger stakes in trade with the US. In fact it's growth into the third largest economy in the world means doubling or tripling its trade with the US and the European Union in the next few years. This would narrow the difference in GDP and per capita between India and China, as India and China started at the same GDP and per capita in 1950. Only in 1990 with China's trade with the US has the Chinese GDP and per capita income increased to create the huge gap with India. ...

Jens Thurau writes about a holiday trip to Fohr on the Wadden Sea on north German coast from Berlin by rail, on Deutsche Bahn, July 27 2025. Thurau writes about the travails of DB, the sudden announcements that the train is headed in another direction, having to get off and catch a regional train. On the return trip the train making a stop when sheep cause rail delays on the rail line further up, the train canceled an having to take aintercity regional express to Berlin. The employees struggle too as the conductor on the return trip offers vouchers from DB to passengers and his apologies. Many DB employees having to deal with customer complaints are planning to leave.  Next trip Jens plans to drive to Fohr.  DB has suffered for years with lack of investment on the 2800 mile rail network. Thanks to chancellor Merkel who never gave priority to such investment and who Jens says called the internet "uncharted territory" in 2013, the digital part of the German economy and DB, along with infrastructure has also suffered. The Scholz coalition promised but failed to deliver on infrastructure with opposition from FDP finance minister Lindner. Only in 2025 has the new coalition of Merz with SDP has the constitutional provision limiting infrastructure spending of Merkel been removed, and DB put on the way to modernizing German rail connections starting with the Berlin Hamburg line. ...

Japan, this report shows was in a weak position and was willing to concede- its auto industry could absorb a 15% tariff but the rest of it's economy must be protected. Any economic weakness would be exposed and conditions mght deteriorate in the Japanese economy by letting things go past August 1 and steep tariffs. Luttnick's idea of investment fund was supported by Japan for investing $400-$550 billion in the US with 50% of profits going to the US. Earlier NYT report by Ana Swanson shows the American side of the deal where Howard Luttnick, with experience as a bond trader and on Wall Street, came up with the unconventional idea of an investment fund knowing that the LDP facing elections and  fearing loss of  its majority was unwilling to give DJT what he wanted on some trade issues. Japanese negotiators decided that giving some way on auto tariffs accepting a 15% flat tariff on auto imports was one way to accomodate the Americans and protect other Japanese industries exports from steep tariffs. One would not know this from reading the WSJ, but DJT with Luttnick, Bessent and Greer as negotiators with Akazawa and Ishiba of Japan have won a historic and significant win for America in creating a level playing field in trade. It also sets a precedent for all other trade deals.  ...

What did the Justices say about US Birthright Citizenship? Here are the words of what the Justices said in the June 27 decision of the US Supreme Court 6-3 blocking the district courts from overruling the Executive Order of the US president. From the outset the Justices sought to decide - was the district court in a state deciding on a case with individual circumstances for the plaintiffs, even by a stretch of the imagination going to decide over the judgement of the Executive Branch what the law of the land should be? SC went though British law, and US law during its history and found no such understanding of the courts. "In each case, the District Court entered a “universal injunction”—an injunction barring executive officials from applying the Executive Order to anyone, not just the plaintiffs. And in each case, the Court of Appeals denied the Government’s request to stay the sweeping relief. The Government argues that the District Courts lacked equitable authority to impose universal relief and has filed three nearly identical emergency applications seeking partial stays to limit the preliminary injunctions to the plaintiffs in each case." The Court held- "Held: Universal injunctions likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has given to federal courts. The Court grants the Government’s applications for a partial stay of the injunctions entered below." ...

Note this comment by the head of the U.S. National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration in the Bush Administration. NHTSA Administrator Jackie Glassman says the average mileage for the fleet today is 30 miles per gallon and raising the current standard of 27.5 mpg for an automakers passenger fleet by 2.5 mpg won't put much pressure on automakers. The Bush administration- and the prior Clinton administration- has not committed to making major improvements to the national mileage standards, with the current standards of 27.5 mpg not having changed since 1990! Glassman says the NHTSA starts with the manufacturers product plans and then sees whether it can get additional fuel savings with these plans. This suggests an NHTSA that is more follower to the auto industry rather than a leader in setting the standards that the auto industry then tries to achieve to reduce the U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Also note that it takes 2 years for things to change, as it will take months for rule changes, and 18 months have to be given to automakers to implement the new rules. By 2008 the fuel efficiency based on market competition and Toyota focussing on hybrids and higher fuel efficiency across the whole car lines, might well exceed any new standards that are watered down, especially if crude prices hold up. Lawsuits by attorney generals of different states and the Lugar-Obama bipartisan bill pushing the adminsitration to mandate higher standards are intended to put pressure on the Bush administration to come up with new higher standards. The failure of Democrats and Republicans in the Clinton and Bush years to raise standards and require the auto companies to use new technology to meet these standards with government assistance is one of the significant failures. This will affect the prospects for the U.S. economy in the years ahead....
