Juarez, the city across from El Paso, has done well in the last 10 months with 27,000 jobs added in the maquiladoras. These foreign owned factories continue to attract business interest even with a drug war raging in the background. The reason is that Juarez connects straight to American Interstate highways and this makes it possible to deliver goods in 3-4 weeks in some cases from the time of order compared to 10 weeks for China. And wages can run as low as $4.21 an hour. Companies get incentives in the tax treatment and worker training is supported by the local government.

The Petrocaribe program has cost Venzuela about $22.1 billion, according to one estimate from the University of Texas, Austin. Under the program participating countries would pay a heavily subisidized price, and received long term loans for the cost at rates of as low as 1%. Petrocaribe countries, including Jamaica, get about 100,000 barrels a day from Venezuela. Oil at $61 a barrel covers only half of Venezuela's budget, and the government has announced cuts in spending of 20%. The IMF estimates that in 2013 such oil shipments declined by 15%, and in 2014 the shipments have declined another 20%.

The U.S. Fed FOMC's decision to continue paring bond purchases by $10 billion monthly. Fed chairman Bernanke said in 2011 responding to criticism from other countries -"it is upto emerging markets to find the appropriate tools to balance their own growth." The Fed Open Market Committee voted 10-0 to continue tapering bond purchases, by reducing it to $65 billion a month from $75 billion a month. The Fed is forecasting growth for 2014 of 3% in 2014 and over 3% in 2015 can be made without sparking inflation. 2013 growth estimated by the Commerce Dept is 2.7%.

Stranded assets is likely to become a major issue for automobile companies switching to electric vehicles, power companies switching away from coal, and oil and gas companies that are moving to renewables. Close to $20 trillion such assets now face writedowns, as shown in this report in the WSJ. These are assets that are retired early or assets that can no longer be used because of high carbon emissions and the switch to new technologies. A recent US Congressional session with oil company executives showed the heads of BP, Shell, Exxon, and Chevron, answering questions on how quickly they were preparing for the switch to renewable energy. The COP26 Glasgow conference has created new urgency at companies such as BP and Shell in Europe.

Most of them are connected with Hong Kong, one of them is on the Politburo in the central government in Beijing. The action takes place ahead of a meeting between the US and Chinese representatives in Alaska. China's recent actions to ensure that only those deemed as "patriots" could govern in legislative assembly in Hong Kong have added to the already existing tensions between the UK, US, and China. Earlier the Trump administration had put sanctions on 10 government officials in Hong Kong for eroding Hong Kong' autonomy. This adds to the already existing trade tensions, and protecting US technology tensions with China.

Jose Mourinho says the League has lost much of the stability. Even relationships don't last, players tired of each other, tired of managers and everything is moving too fast, say managers. Arsenal follows Tottenham in changing managers after losses against other soccer teams. Arsenal is in 8th place and Manchester United in 9th place, owners see changing managers particularly in December as a way to keep their place in the big leagues. With more jobs opening up it is not particularly bad for the fired managers such as Pochettino of Tottenham who can sit at home waiting for the call.

After winning a giant Pentagon cloud computing contract of $10 billion over the next decade Microsoft is mounting a challenge to Amazon's dominance in cloud computing. Amazon has 48% of the business renting out cloud infrastructure in 2018, according to Gartner. Microsoft has 15.5% and is gaining each year. Amazon took the lead by starting early by 2010. Microsoft and Google Alphabet were slow to start. Microsoft has an edge in its long history of working with business. These companies expand the business by building data centers called server farms around the world. Capital One Financial lost about 100 million in stolen customer records in 2018 with storage in Amazon's cloud infrastructure, safety being another issue in this business.

This video from the World Climate Initiative provides a glimpse of water use conservation that has cut water use by 70% in some villages in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan in India. Under the MARVI project young water experts are trained by the University of Maharana in Udaipur and the University of Sydney. These water experts pass on water conservation methods to the village farmers. One method is to plant a mix of mustard, chickpeas and wheat, with another grain instead of only wheat. Other effort is to educate farmers about use of well water in ways that conserve underground water and to use drip irrigation, sprinklers. Other projects link up with projects and manufacturing set up under Israeli Indian collaboration near Tel Aviv using Israeli water technology.

They have a combined following of 59 million on social media with Facebook being the largest. Of 812,000 Facebook posts looked at by CCDH 65% came from these 12 persons.

On Facebook alone 73% of all anti-vaccine content comes from these 12 persons. These 12 include a religious zealot, a wellness blogger, some physicians who have taken on pseudoscience, and Robert F. Irish prime minister Varadkar resigns after what critics call a "gimmicky" referendum to change language respecting women's role at home to coincide on International Women's Day. It was rejected by about 70% of the vote with about 44% of people voting and little understanding of what this was about as the wording was poorly done and it was not well thought out. If it was about respecting women and promoting participation outside the home the government could take steps as Japan and India at different economic stages are doing. A coordinated release of petroleum reserves from the International Energy Agency and 30 participating countries is planned in the event something like the attack on Saudi oil facilities happens. About 5% of the worlds oil supplies were put out in the attack. If 7% are lost then the IEA would step in to call for release of petroleum reserves of individual countries. As of July 2019 1.5 billion barrels of oil are in storage in emergency reserves. U.S. SPR reserves are estimated at 644 million barrels and the figures are 100 million barrels for each of Germany, Japan and France, and China at 344 million barrels. These man made caverns are as long as 2000 feet.

The last time this release happened was in 2011 after the Libyan war disruptions.

As the federal revenues rise to about 18.1% of GDP (close to historical rates after return to growth) and outlays to offset the effects of the 2008 recession diminishing, the deficit is forecast to drop to 3% of GDP in 2014, and 2.6% in 2015, close to the average for the last 40 years. The deficit is estimated to be total $514 billion for fiscal year 2014, declining from $1.4 trillion in 2009. Real GDP growth (adjusting for inflation) of 3% is forecast for 2014-2017. Outlays other than for health care, Social Security and interest payments on debt for year 2016-2024, are set to be the lowest percentage of GDP since 1940, according to the CBO report in 2014. Debt will increase to 79% of GDP by 2024 from an estimate of 74% for 2014. CBO projects unemployment only slowly decreasing, remaining above 6% till late 2016, with the rate of participation in the labor force- lower now because many people have opted to not look for work discouraged by the job prospects- slow to recover....

Ideas include, mentoring, with early education exposure to technology careers- as early as middle school. One executive says she takes in 150 female high school students to Washington D.C. for leadership training. Other ideas are to turn maternity leave into a positive feature of women's lives by letting women who do well keep their duties by delegating them to others while they are away, and making a smooth pathway back to work full time. The suggestion is to allow a gradual transition to ramp back up to full time work, and allow flexible hours, working from home. In daily work women are encouraged to look for partnerships with other areas of the organization for getting results, and being sensitive to which areas of the organization they need to build support in.

American Airlines share price ended at $1.98, down 33%, on Oct. 3, 2011. AMR averted bankruptcy protection in 2003. This is the lowest level for the share price since 2003. AMR suffers from higher labor costs than other large airlines that went through bankruptcy and realigned costs. AMR says its labor costs are $800 millon higher than its competitors. AMR raised $726 million in aircraft- backed bonds to refinance part of $1.3 billion in debt obligations due in second half of 2011. AMR has ordered 460 new fuel efficient aircraft in a lease financing deal offered by Boeing that does not stress AMR's balance sheet. Fears that AMR is burning cash with its expected operating loss caused Moddy's to change its outlook for AMR to negative from stable. AMR had $17.1 billion in total debt on June 30, 2011....

This editorial in the WSJ points to Bernie Sanders 15% lead over Donald Trump in a Jan. 2016 WSJ/NBC poll- with Hillary Clinton having a 10 point lead- as proof that Sanders should be taken seriously. It says that electability of Sanders is no longer an issue, especially because the 2016 election is coming up with many surprises, including a changed election environment. Other possibilities raised in the editorial- the possibility that an independent like Bloomberg might run if Trump is nominated, further increasing the chance for Sanders to be elected president. By splitting the Republican party a Trump or Cruz nomination could also put the House in jeopardy for the Republicans, removing the House as a check if a Democrat is elected president.
