Four resolutions Jack Welch suggests for 2009 and tough times for anybody leading acompany, adivision, or a team, are to be focussed on delivering innovative products and services. Your customers are hurting too so give them more value for their buck. So don't get too defensive and be looking at the internal side of costs alone. Be outward looking and stay on the offensive suggests Welch. This is the first and foremost resolution. The second resolution is make the value of integrity and keeping it, employees learning that ignoring ethical violations however small is the same as making one. Third, he suggests educating the employees and the public of the dangers of taking away secret ballot in labor elections through the Employee Free Choice Act. Its the failure of the union to change work rules and other ways of doing things that has created a lot of the problems facing the Detroit auto industry. Its not the best way to preserve jobs and benefits when they be eroded by failing competitiveness and other errors. And the last resolution for 2009 and the tough years ahead is to celebrate the hard work and results in addressing the difficult challenges ahead so the team remains motivated, inspired, and works with enthusiasm to build on small victories and heroic efforts. ...

The US economy is growing at a much faster pace than Europe or China in the last quarter of 2021- at 7% annualized growth in the fourth quarter up from 2% in the third quarter, according to Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. This compares to 2% in eurozone and 4% in China. Major US ports such as Los Angeles are processing 20% more container volume in 2021 than in 2019, while Rotterdam and Hamburg are almost flat compared to 2019 level. Consumption of durable goods has jumped 45% above 2018 levels in the US, only 2% in eurozone, according to ECB data. The factory gate prices in China are far outpacing the consumer prices in China, suggesting weak domestic demand and strong foreign demand. Lars Jensen, head of network at container ship company A.P. Moller-Maersk says the global supply bottlenecks were started by this surge in US demand with more ships headed for the US taking ships away from other places. The US economy will grow at 6% in 2021 and 4% in 2022, with wages growing 4% a year above the pre-pandemic trend rate, compared with 1% in eurozone, according to Bank for International Settlements. This is pushing inflation up in other countries by pushing up the value of the dollar. In Mexico hitting 7.4% and the central bank raising interest rates 0.5% point to 5.5%. In Russia inflation up to 8.4% and central bank raising interest rates by 1percentage point to 8.5%. The equipment investment in the US is up by 13% this year according to JP Morgan Chase, only 3.6% in eurozone, 0.1% in Japan. All this is creating a large gap between the US and Europe, US and China in economic growth and demand growth, and in income growth. ...

The vast expansion of the Indian middle class takes on a different dimension a few weeks before the election say experts, as India heads into a general election after the India Pakistan conflict in February 2019. This is because national security now has a wider constituency. It could help the incumbent party the BJP with urban voters and swing voters as the issue of security remained prominent in the northern states. In other states where caste and regional politics, farmer agricultural related issues are prominent, this could be less of a factor. Overlooked in this is the manner in which new investments in infrastructure have been pushed forward for rail, road and bridges, and in other infrastructure such as hospitals and universities. The government slogan is that what was once considered impossible is now possible. New metro lines are being inaugurated in many cities including Ahmedabad, Mumbai. The speed with which the Metro in Mumbai is being built, with the head of the project saying it should have been built yesterday, is an example of the urgency given to infrastructure. The government is pushing hard to convey the image that the next 5 years would lead to an infrastructure building boom that it has shown can be done. A recent report in the Guardian shows that China is pouring every 2 years more concrete than the U.S. did in the entire 20th century. This fact drives India under Modi as it heads into the 2019 election, the sense that previous governments had never pushed India's potential for modernization similar to its East Asian neighbors, Japan, South Korea and China.    ...

Paying one cent more for every pound of tomatoes picked by farm workers from central America has been resisted by Burger King and other fast food chains and by the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange. Taco Bell and McDoalds have signed up for this increase. The extra cent per pound is the first pay increase workers have received in 30 years. A picker would have to fill 15 of 32 pound buckets an hour to earn Florida's minimum wage of $6.79 even with the one cent increase per pound.

Paul Kasriel sees the numbers for personal disposable income and those for personal consumption expenditures and personal residential investment expenditures and finds them very disturbing as they have deficits for the last 6 of 7 years. People have been borrowing against their home to spend but that piggybank is running out very quickly and so he sees impact on personal consumption leading to a recession.
