Italy's budget deficit was brought down to 3% of GDP in 2012 under Mario Monti's government. The cost of austerity measures is a expected economic contraction of 1.8% in 2013, according to OECD and Moody's forecasts. There is intense opposition in Italy to the 4 billion euro property tax. A $100 billion infrastructure project to create a high tech manufacturing and freight corridor between New Delhi and Mumbai with a third of the money coming from Japanese public and private money will be announced this week during Japanese Prime Minister Abe's visit to India this week. Japanese investment in India is expected to rise from $515 million in 2006 to $5.5 billion in 2011. Lack of infrastructure has been a key constraint to investment in Indian manufacturing and this project hopes to address this problem. This would include airports, ports, and a high speed freignt line for the 1500 kilometres between New Delhi and Mumbai. CEO's from companies such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Canon, Hitachi have joine a new Japan-India business leader forum. Toyota plans to increase manufacturing capacity to 600,000 in India by 2015. Japan played a major role in the rapid modernization of Korea, China, and now is likely to do so in India as well.

The British governmet announced its own bailout plan. It offered to recapitalize its banks with an injection of capital i exchange for preference shares. It offered banks like the RBS, Barclays, HSBC upto 50 billion pounds to shore up their capital. It also provided guarantee of 250 billon pounds to help banks refinance debt and the Bank of England will double the amount it lends to banks under the special liquidity scheme to 200 billion pounds. The aim is to restore trust in British banks and allow banks to lend to each other and lend to consumers and companies which is becoming difficult or is even frozen and the financial arteries getting clogged as banks are afraid to lend to each other similiar to what is going on in the USA. In Spain the government announced it was creating its own 30 billion euro fund to buy assets from the nation's banks.

New York Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, is President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court. Saying that Stomayor had arigorous intellect and a mastery of the law, President Obama went on to say at an announcement ceremony, that the judge's inspiring story was crucial in his decision. One that was made with deep reflection and careful deliberation. Obama quoted Justice Oliver Wendell Homes- "the life of the law has not beenlogic, it has been experience." Her parents immigrated from Puerto Rico and lived in a poor neighborhood. Her mother worked six day weeks to earn enough money to send her and a brother to Catholic school. From there she got into Princeton University, where she once felt like "a vistor landing in an alien country," but graduated summa cum laude. She went on to Yale law school, where she was editor of the Yale Law Journal, workwed for Robert Morgenthau in the district attorney's office in New York and later went into private practice. She was nominated by the first President Bush in 1991 to the federal appeals court on the advice of Senator Patrick Moynihan, and then by Bill Clinton to the appeals court in 1997. Judge Sotomayor takes pride in her ethnicity, gender and growing up in the poor part of the Bronx, and said in a2002 lecture- " I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who has'nt lived that life."...

Ukraine president Poroshenko tells a news conference in Kiev in September 2014 - "the doors of the E.U. are open to us; I am absolutely convinced of this. In India 70% of smartphones sold in 2015 cost less than $150. Apple's market share in India is really small at about 2%. Apple iPhone sales were up 56% in the 1st quarter of 2016 over the same quarter in 2015, according to CEO Tim Cook. iPhones cost about $300-$1000 without a data plan in India reducing the size of the market. In May 2016 Apple applied for approval from the Indian government to sell refurbished or certified iPhones at lower cost. In India the best selling iPhone is the older 5S which costs about $300. It makes up 50% of iPhone sales in India for 1st quarter in 2016, according to Counterpoint. Apple has no model at the low end, as the SE model will cost even more at $500. The Indian market is growing at 26% in 2016 over prior year, making it the next largest market after China. Another approach Apple is taking is seeking approval to open its own retail stores and sell online. A waiver has been given by the government for using locally made parts. Apple's high prices and margins remain a significant barrier in opening up the Indian market, when lower priced Korean and Chinese smartphone models offer attractive options to price conscious Indian buyers....

American journalist Bob Schieffer spent 46 years with CBS. He was host of the news show on CBS "Face the Nation" for 24 years. Schieffer says he made the biggest impression on the American public only in the last 12 years since turning 65. During these 12 years he moderated several presidential debates, put CBS at the highest level of viewership as other leading journalists retired, and published a best selling memoir, "This Just In." Things were not expected to turn out this way. In 2003 Mr. Schieffer found out he had bladder cancer, and he says ever since he saw things differently- everything appeared as a temporary assignment. In 2005 he announced he would retire in 2007, when he was 70. Each year after that CBS persuaded him to stay. He replaced Dan Rather for "CBS Evening News" in 2005, and gave it solid ratings till he stepped down in 2007. The U.S. delegation to the Group of 20 meeting of ministers and central bankers in Sydney, Australia will include these 2 senior officials. The appointments come as the U.S. has not moved in the direction of greater power sharing with emerging nations at the IMF, and the emerging markets crisis in 2013-2014 with India, Brazil and other countries critical of U.S. Fed policy leading to capital outflows. Sheets works well with central bankers from other countries and is well received as a consensus builder. Sobel is seen as more direct in presenting U.S. positions. ...

The market shares of Hyundai, Kia, and VW have received a boost as the Detroit carmakers struggle. Kia and Hyundai have moved their market share from 5 in 2008 to 7.3% today, up by 2.3%. Hyundai had difficulty getting brand name recognition for quality and performance in prior years, but it has persevered. KIa and yundai spend more on incentives, $3200 in 2009 compared to $2000 in 2008 to attract first time buyers. To take into account the economc conditions Hyundai was the first to come up with the Hyundai Assurance Plan, which allows buywers who finance their purchase to return the cars if they lose their jobs. Once these buyers try the Korea cars the ope is that they will see that the quality is on par with the Americans and the Japannese for a lower price, or even exceeds them. The Korean carmakers have worked hard on improving quality. In 2009 Hyundai won the North American Car of the Year award at the Detroit Auto Show for the Genesis luxury car. VW is also gaining market share this year. VW's market share is up to 2% from 1.5% in 2008. Aggressive marketing of the Jetta has moved its sales by 8.3% in May. And a couple of fundamental facts which won't just go away, are shaping things this way. American households doubled their outstanding debt between 2000 and 2007, to $13.8 trillion. In 2008 total debt went down for the first time since World War II. $13 trillion in wealth has been lost since the recession began. And this number will grow as the economy goes deeper into this downturn. The confidence in the capitalist system has been shaken. People want to get debt free. AlixPartners, found in asurvey, that Americans plan to save 14% of total earnings once this downturn ends. Two thirds of those surveyed say they plan to buy less in the future, and more than halfplan to buy less expensive things. There is a fundamental mood change from those who have been interviewed like Mr Bailey here in Boise, Idaho, a small business owner stuck with a lot of debt and no income. His goal: to get rid of debt and concentrate on making just enough money to enjoy myself and my family, and not trying to get rich anymore. So he goes out and sells his SUV to eliminate a $800 monthly payment and replaces it with a used minivan paid for in cash, he sells off a vacation home he built, sells another home to renters, cuts his staff to a handful. Many like Mr Bailey remember how their parents lived and heard the stories passed down from parents who lived through frugal times in the 40's and 50's, when America was still largely rural and peopled by families with modest incomes especially in most of the south and west. Its this change and shift in attitude and mindset from wanting to be rich to just wanting to be happy for themselves and their families, valuing the really important things, not piling up material acquisitions that the latest advertising is getting them to buy, in taking pride like their fathers and mothers before them in thrifty behaviours and saving, that may lead to a very different economy than seen before. Tesla with a tiny falling market share of 6% in China is being outmaneuverd in China even as it gains benefits for the company and for CEO Elon Musk. It fails to make Tesla competitive in world markets ceding leadership to China.  Tesla gets 68% of 2023 profits of $10 billion from China operations. China operations of Tesla produced 947,000 electric cars 53% of its total with China sales at 600,000. Tesla was able to complete the large factory near Shanghai, the largest of its 7 plants, in record time with assistance from China's government. Elon Musk knows premier Li Qiang of China a Shanghai Communist party official which facilitated the building the Chinese plant, lower 15% tax rate instead of 25% till 2023. This 2023 1 million car production is actually not giving Tesla a foothold in the Chinese market, as Tesla's market share is falling from 7.8% to 6% of the market. What it has given China's local companies such as BYD is a world level competitor for China's local companies to compete with, learn from as China develops its own world class electric manufacturing capabilities. BYD has its own unique battery technology and is making the batteries in house. Local companies dominate a very competitive landscape in which there is very little room for error, with companies consolidating. This suggests that Tesla may be an insignificant competitor in China in the future even as it has enhanced its profitability as a company in its domestic American market with its China operation.   ...

Annalena Baerbock, 44 years, of the Greens is Germany's nominee for president of UN General Assembly in 2025. She was nominated by chancellor Scholz. As a leader of the Greens and in the coalition government of chancellor Scholz she has tried to show that Germany is a modernizing nation and innovative more than is seen in its political class. As one of the youngest politicians she has presented Germany in a new way as a young face for Europe. DW.com shows the evolution of the Greens as a party since the 1980's. Baerbock joined the Greens at age 25, four years later in 2010 she was head of the Brandenburg state section of the party, becoming a board member of the European Green party. She is still only 44 years old. She studied public law and political science in Hamburg, and gained a Masters degree in international law at the London School of Economics, one of Germany's first leading politicians to study in Britain. She started studies for a Doctorate at the Free University of Berlin, which she left in 2013 as she was elected to the Bundestag. By 2021 Annalena Baerbock was with Robert Habeck co-leader of the party heading into the general election. At one point the Greens were polling 5 months before the 2021 election at 27% with Annalena Baerbock running for chancellor against Armin Laschet of CDU and ahead of the CDU by 3 points in Sonntag poll. The Greens came in at 15% of the vote in 2021 dropping slightly to 12% in 2025. This time the Greens will sit in the parliamentary opposition headed by Robert Habeck. ...

India US trade relationship needs a complete rethinking in 2025 as trade tensions increase. In addition India needs to accept that the US or some other power has to maintain peace from a possible nuclear escalation that would be so damaging to south Asia and the world, and the US role under DJT seen in this context and welcomed. For this to happen both US and India need to look beyond the past perceptions of ethnic divisions as India industrializes, beyond China, as India's modernization will change everything in Asia and the world. Possible opportunities exist in India offering it's strengths in pharmaceuticals to reduce costs of drugs to ordinary Americans. India could take advantage of the reduction in oil prices under DJT to reduce purchases of Russian oil so that it is getting nearly the same price when oil prices were high and Russia offered discounted oil.  On agricultural exports to India, India can look for better ways to tackle this offering some transition period to when the US could send some quantities of exports in areas where India's rapidly growing middle class can absorb US fruits production such as cherries and apples, other fruit. India could help the US in the pharmaceutical and other sectors as a way to address US desire for reducing costs of drugs in the US. India could for instance make the drugs at a low cost in the US, investing in factories in the US to supply low cost drugs to average Americans tackling one of the biggest problems the American people face. ...

As the pandemic continues to spread and numbers grow with reopening of the economy the question remains -what can we learn from other countries positive experience in controlling spread? Here the Times provides the example of German contact tracing- chancellor Merkel has emphasized that a lot depends on "total" contact tracing, and contact tracing "above all else." Germany's experience is that even if you don't get everything right, you make an honest effort with everything you've got and do it early it makes a real difference. Some of the offices across Germany are stretched and short of staff but they have been working since the beginning of March, sometimes in the early days 7 days a week. Only 33% or one third of the offices throughout Germany for contact tracing have the required 5 person team for every 20,000 people, and 35% are overstretched or at their limit, according to one survey. No apps, just a low tech effort with people from the state administrations who were not working during lockdown trying doing something else, or volunteers. Mainly using the phone, talking to people and tracing the contact chain of people testing positive. Putting this information on the computer with a central database.  The Berlin office has 115 workers and has tracked down every one of 666 virus cases it was given. Because of privacy concerns at the Munich office sometimes even the patient's name is not given and office staff have to locate the name and the person. It requires dedication, flexibility and above all resilience, says Harold Rau, the deputy Mayor of the Cologne office, cited in this Times report. The doctor alerts the local office with a test result. The office calls the person and finds out who he has been in contact with for the last 14 days. Then the people who were in contact with are grouped based on the directness of contact, face to face, so on. These people are asked to quarantine for 14 days, sometimes with the rest of their household. They get daily call to find out how their doing for symptoms. The effort goes back to Robert Koch in the 1892 cholera epidemic in Hamburg. Robert Koch, microbe hunter in Germany, was called in after the epidemic spread from Moscow. It devastated Moscow and Tokyo, but Hamburg suffered far less about 8605 deaths as a result of the contact tracing and strict closing off quarantining of affected chains after isolating them, closing off affected parts of the city. Bit by bit the cholera epidemics sparks were put out before turning into flames, says Koch. In the current pandemic Germany has suffered 8241 deaths and 178,000 confirmed cases. So far this is in line with the cholera epidemic in Hamburg 1892, and this for all of Germany. And it is not just affluent nations that can do this. where there is a will there is a way. In Kerala state in southwestern India, similar efforts have worked to limit spread  with even better results than Germany. ...

GM decides to reduce production and not reduce prices with incentives that match competitors. VW sales increased 29%, Audi 24%, Daimler 13%, and BMW up 45%. Experts expect the better conditions in the U.S. auto market to continue especially as many cars that reach a life of 11 years need to be replaced.
