Aeroflot is listed on the London stock exchange. It is going through a makeover by ordering Boeing and Airbus planes to become profitable, because the older Russian made Tu-154 planes were costly to operate with higher fuel consumption. The Sukhoi Superjets are being built in partnership with Boeing. Kramer says the aircraft industry operates on long timelines so that the lack of local aircraft comparable to Embraer of Brazil and Bombardier of Canada is more a reflection of the situation in the 1990's than of today. Newer aircraft are planned for the next decade for smaller midrange planes. In the meantime Aeroflot is selling all of its Tupolev aircraft and plans to layoff 6000 workers during the transition to profitability. China's efforts to promote trade with India. Visit by Premier Wen to New Delhi. Deals made include a loan from China Development Bank to help Reliance ADA group purchase power-producing equipment from Shanghai Electric Group Company. The two companies signed a $10 billion agreement in October 2010 for Reliance to buy power equipment. India sells mostly commodities such as iron ore and imports Chinese power and telecom equipment and manufactured goods at this stage. Trade estimated at $60 billion is tilted in China's favor because of cheaper manufactured goods imported from China. Premier Wen calls for expanding trade emphasizing the advantages of combining China's strengths in engineering and infrastructure with India's strengths in information technology and pharmaceuticals. His point: the 21st century is the Asian century, and both India and China can make great achievements. India sees the advantages of using China's strengths and cost competitiveness in telecom, power and other areas as it seeks to boost its development of infrastructure. Wen's visit follows visits by the UK's Cameron, US's Obama, France's Sarkozy, all pursuing trade and investment with India....

The huge risks the misallocated stimulus capital from real estate speculation poses for the Chinese economy. China's government rapidly expanded lending after the 2008 global financial crisis. One estimate is that about 10 trillion yuan in new loans were made in 2009, over twice the amount of 2008, expanding the loan portfolio and money supply by one third. A major problem is vacant homes as Chinese put their money in second homes as an investment. Chinese are not investing in the stock market because of the volatility, and with the low yields in bonds and banks money is going into real estate. According to a Morgan Stanley economist, about 25-30% of private commercial and housing space is vacant. This happens just as middle class Chinese are being priced out of the housing market. Prices went up by 12% in the housing market this year according to the China National Bureau of Statistics. Couples wanting to leave their parent's homes find it difficult to do so. She says that the growing middle class in Russia seeks respect and participation in how Russia is to be governed. She thinks Russia's dependence on oil and commodities for revenues fosters a climate of corruption and it should move faster in the direction of diversifying its economy. Russian entry in the World Trade Organization, fostering a climate for Russian engineers and scientists to work inside Russia and start new companies, and building U.S. and European business and private ties with Russia's public and private sectors, should be promoted to help the Russian economy diversify. Resetting Russian relations or depending on the U.S. government to come up with solutions appears to be the wrong answer, Rice points out, because resetting is still based on internal politics in Russia. ...

Under a proposed capital infusion into Peugeot the French government, Dongfeng Motor of China, and the Peugeot family would each control 15% of the company. Dongfeng and the French government would buy new shares of about $7.50 to $8 each, and providing 800 million euros each. The Peugeot family would provide 100 million euros. Currently the Peugeot family controls 25.4% of the shares and 38.1% of voting rights. Earlier GM sold its 7% stake in Peugeot, and Peugeot turned to its partner in China for the capital increase. Peugeot shares declined by 11% to 10.21 euros on Jan 23, 2014, as a result of investor concerns about the prospect of three different shareholders interests. Peugeot expects to use the capital increase for technology investments as it struggles to come out of a prolonged slump in its European markets. One of the conditions made by Dongfeng Motor is that the current chairman Thierry Peugeot be succeeded by an executive not connected to the Peugeot family or the French government....

With the risk posed to developing markets economies from volatile capital inflows the fund is now closed to new investors. Often the mutual funds would buy and sell the same companies creating volatile inflows, and worse with sudden outflows as India experienced with slowing growth. Returns were 27% over 3 years 2010-2013, but have slowed to 2% to date in 2014 with the emerging markets crisis in early 2014. Leverenz is a quiet person and stays away from the limelight. He works solo without a team of analysts and tries to get a first hand feel for the companies he invests in by visiting and talking to the people at the companies. He travels for 6 months of the year, and has developed early relationships with fast growing Chinese internet companies Baidu and Tencent. Diversification has helped BHP weather the decline in commodities prices better than Rio Tinto, Anglo-American and Vale. BHP is expected to report profits of $12.5 billion for the last fiscal year. BHP is also in the oil and gas business, in addition to iron, ore, copper, coal and aluminium. This has made it possible to take writedowns of $5.5 billion and still make stable profits. Andrew Mackenzie, the new CEO of BHP, is a Scotsman who is focussing on the productivity of capital and cost-cutting. BHP announced $1.9 billion in cost savings since July 2012. Mackenzie's goal is to reduce capital expenditures from $18 billion today to $15 billion or less in 2-3 years. Capital is tied up in incomplete projects taken up in the boom period of higher prices, and the process of reducing capital expenditures is gradual. Capital expenditures in the mining business increased dramatically from $20 billion to $120 billion from 2003 to 2012. For most of this period China's economy registered growth rates of over 10%....

Stevenson and Gough describe the remarkable success of AirAsia under Tony Fernandes, who turned it into Asia's largest budget carrier with 43 million passengers in 2013. Fernandes acquired the airline for 1 Malaysia ringgit or 29 cents in Sept. 2001 from a Malaysian conglomerate. He is an accountant educated in Britain, originally from Goa, India, who worked as a Warner Music executive in Southeast Asia. Fernandes says he was encouraged by the founder of British budget carrier EasyJet, and hired executives from Ryanair. Expanding in Asia was accomplished with acquisitions and partial ownership in local airlines located in Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, India, Japan and other countries. Using the Ryanair model AirAsia has maintained a low cost structure, while increasing revenues with prices for addon options such as seat selection and checkin. It has revenues of $1.1 billion and is profitable. The airline uses relatively new Airbus 320 planes that are also used by other successful budget carriers. Walmart opens its first store in Amritsar, India, as part of a long term expansion in India. It is a 50,000 square foot Best Price store, a rarity in India. Walmart and its Indian partner Bharti Enterprises plan to open 15 stores in India in the next 3 years. Mike Duke former head of Walmart's international operation is now the new CEO. He has recruited local managers who understand and grasp how to market in India. Walmart India CEO, Raj Jain, has worked for 20 years with Unilever and Whirlpool in India. Unilever India, has a strong local presence in India for decades. Big wholesalers can be a poltically sensitive issue in India, where the retail industry serving 1.1 billion people is mostly an estimated 10 million mom and pop stores, who fear being overrun by these large wholesalers. Walmart operates as a wholesale store selling to local merchants, a cash and carry business selling 10,000 products to licensed store owners, schools, hospitals, hotels and other institutions. Even now under Indian rules governing foreign retailers, this Walmart venture cannot sell directly to consumers....

Hyundai inventory is building up and its falling way short of selling 700,000 cars in North America by 2010, it sold 455,000 cars last year. Powers shows Hyundai as having surpassed Toyota in Initial Quality Study, the brand had not registered with car buyers. And in 2007 unsold Sonata cars were piling up on football field sized lots behind the Birmingham, Alabama plant of Hyundai. Sales fell 30% in 1st quarter 2007 in the US. market and matched Chrysler's situation of building cars without the buyers....

The WSJ opinion section. WSJ points to the British plan as "a Plan -at Last", something that gets to the root of the crisis more than Paulson's plan to buy toxic assets. It will directly help to capitalize British Banks. The British govbernment will inject 50 billion pounds in return for preferred shares. It will guarantee 250 billion pounds in new debt issuance for those banks that participate in the recapitalization plan in order to secure their short term funding. And an additional $200 billion pounds is provided as additional liquidity through the Bank of England's Special Liquidity Scheme. And the British, the Fed, the Swedes, the Swiss, all lowered interest rates by half a point in a coordinated effort. Note that the British just as badly or even worse than the Americans binged and got drunk on debt and British banks were overleveraged to extreme. America is hardly the oonly scapegoat in this WSJ points out and reminds Brown that the five biggest British banks combined assets are about 4 times Britain's GDP. ...

Tyler Owen points out that the innovations that made areal difference in the standards of living and incomes of people in America came in the earlier decades of the 20th century. From 1947 to 1973, this pattern continued with the doubling of inflation adjusted median incomes in the USA. From 1973 to 2004, it rose 22%. Over the last decade it actually declined. The impact of automobiles, airplanes, anitbiotics and new household appliances was huge in the prosperity and incomes of the American people. The personal computer and the internet do not offer the same potential for improvement in incomes and standards of living. At the same time as society ages in the US and healthcare dollars are measured as part of GNP, the increasing GDP from such dollars does not reflect an improvement in the health care people receive.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers 99.7% of cars made through November 2009 were sold. According to Trade Minister Chen Deming demand in the rural areas now exceeds that in the urban regions. And demand is also growing in smaller and mid sized cities compared to Beijing and Shanghai. Demand surged 46% to 13.6 million vehicles in 2009 according to the Association. For example 55-60% of Nissan sales come from middle and small sized cities according to a Nissan dealer. Nissan with 2009 sales at 756,000 is now the largest Japanese auto manufacturer in China. Government new bank lending and $732 million in subsidies, sales tax cut, all helped auto sales. But Chen Bin who oversees regulation of the auto industry at the National Development and Reform Commisson says automakers face possible overcapacity in China.

US Senate lawmakers agreed to increase the FDIC deposit insurance limits to $250,000 from $100,000. These limits have not been permanently increased since 1980- the increase in late 2008 was a temporary measure to support the banking system. Credit rating agencies pushed hard to avoid the setting up of a credit ratings watchdog agency and succeeded. Under Senator Al Franken's provision a government overseen credit ratings agency board would be setup and it would assign new financial products to ratings agencies for rating. 63 Senators had supported this provision in a Senate debate. Intense lobbying from ratings agencies to avoid this government oversight resulted in shelving of this provision. The change is to ask the SEC to study the conflict of interests issue and how an independent agency might function, and give the SEC authority to setup such a system.

Barcelona sculptor Jaume Plensa and his 44 foot high work " Echo," which shows a girl's head. This was raised in Madison Square Park in May 2011. It gives viewers pause amid the bustle of the Flatiron district of New York city. Plensa recently went to Chichester Cathedral in England. He is creating a sculpture for the cathedral's nave, a hand raised in blessing , which will be formed with a stainless steel lattice of letters in eight alphabets. Plensa's focus on the body is evident- something from the nineteenth century sculpture tradition but done in a twentieth century way. Plensa wants to see people pause at the sculptures such as the Echo, to be jolted out of their everyday consciousness when they are listening to the constant chatter of voices outside, so that the can hear the voice from inside themselves.

Fighters in the Free Syrian Army are paid $100 by comparison. Many of the fighters coming from Russia, western countries, and Arab countries see this as part of a visionary effort to create a new Islamic society, an experiment of sorts. In the process dislocating many of the local population and turning them into refugees going to Turkey and Jordan. Many of the 20,000 fighters crossing into the region from the Syrian border are veterans of other conflicts and bring previous experience. The Syrian city of Raqqa is described here by Trofimov as dominated by these fighters with much of the local Syrian population turned into refugees.

Texas regulators approved a new wind transmission project which will add a network of transmission lines from west texas to the big cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. These lines will handle 18,500 megawatts of power, enough for 3.7 million homes on a hot day when air conditioners are running. It will add to the 5300 megawatts of already installed capacity. The project will cost $4.93 billion and will come on stream by 2013. Texas now leads the nation in wind energy with twice the capacity of the next leading state California. Texas is unique because it has its own transmission grid so it can move faster without needing approval of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Transmission is a big problem because in west Texas some of the wind generators have to be turned off because of lack of transmission capacity.

A lot of readers responded to this saying that the Nano will actually reduce the consumption of gasoline per passenger mile travelled and reduce CO2 emissions as the two wheelers it replaces are very fuel inefficient and polluting. Also future versions of the Nano can be improved to develop more fuel efficent ones and also with new technologies like hybrid and so on which reduce oil consumption and emissions even further. Meantime readers say it is important for western countries to focus their energies on developing other technologies like electric vehicles and other hybrid technologies that can then be transferred to Asian countries to fuel efficient and less polluting motorization possible there. The shift to smaller vehicles in western countries would also create a healthy balance and a global partnership in the true sense of the word to oil consumption and prices down.

This report says the 1.5 million barrels a day is actually a 1.16 million barrels a day cut as Nigeria, Venezuela and Angola may just not cut production by their 341,000 barrels a day. To that Iran also has to cut its 200,000 barels a day. So the Saudis may end up having to do the cuts of about a million barrels a day with the Emirates and Kuwait. And Deutsche Bank says that it takes about 15 months for oil prices to stabilize after these cuts. So prices could keep falling well into 2009 as the recession deepens worldwide. Some anaysts say the Saudis ended up contributing to the global crisis through their minimal efforts to restrain oil prices or divert some of the petro dollars to new exploration, rather than to cheap liquidity that fueled the housing bubble.
