What are the systemic effects of one of the automakers going out of business? It affects the whole supplier base. This is the case in the event of a liquidation of assets, closing Delphi and so on. This was mentioned by Wagoner as the alternative and not prepackaged bankruptcy with DIP set aside loan for warranty financing which some experts are advocating in combination with a government loan with strings attached including a change in management. Some of the strings are covered in a New York Times editorial reflecting public opinion on the democratic side on this issue, and that includes removal of current management of Detroit auto companies, and fuel efficiency targets raised higher than legislation passed recently under heavy lobbying pressure from these automakers. Contraction of automakers and job contraction should be differentiated from liquidation of assets. The contraction of automaker jobs not just at the Detroit companies but also at Japanese plants in the US is going to happen even with a government loan to Detroit as Honda is also reducing its workforce and this will happen at Toyota also. The carefully planned bankruptcy with carefully and fully addressed warranty and other issues could be made to work along with sufficient government loan money in the $50-$70 billion range in return for equity and other conditions, and its not clear why the management of the Detroit auto companies see it as impossible and not just difficult, when they are already facing considerable difficulties in this market and with public opinion. Rampell talks about how jobs lost are not recoverable, and this is fairly obvious considering that the Japanese and the Germans are unlikely to relocate in the same areas that Detroit has located its plants , and prefer to go and build green plants to specification, and hire very carefully so that workers with the Toyota or Honda frame of mind are hired to work there. This can change depending on individual circumstances but is what they generally prefer to do. Also its important to bear in mind that forecasts that are being used of 13-14 million vehicle market in 2009 are just guesses, it could turn out that the sales drop to something like 10 -12 million vehicles, in which case there will be contraction of jobs on a large scale even at the Japanese and Korean and German plants which there is even now but on a smaller scale. ...

Makes several critical points about the chinese stock market. First its low in transparency, very little accurate reliable information is available to investors. A gambling type atmosphere characterizes the appearance of brokerage houses and places where people invest. This gives room for part superstition and part good luck focus on lucky numbers such as the number 8 and unlucky numbers such as the number 4. It is a very immature market with 60-80% of investors who have no understanding of financial concepts. Second its a very large number of people who are entering the market every day, about 100,000 investor accounts are opening every day. As interest rates are so low in China more and more people are putting savings into the stock market. This adds to the 100 million investor accounts already open. At this rate there will be 36.5 million new accounts a year from now and 173 million investor accounts in 2 yearsand most of them caught up in this gambling type atmosphere with so little reliable information available about each stock in addition to the other problems China faces of corruption, and possibilities of deception in stock dealings and companies. With daily stock trading at $50 billion, this could grow to double that and the kinds of numbers that could lead to a crisis if stocks take a tailspin. With the huge liquidity in the system from China's large trade surplus with the US this problem can grow rapidly and get out of control. Juan Montes of the WSJ describes the problems facing states in Mexico as the governors have accumulated power, debt has risen rapidly, and accountability of state officials is at a new low. Half of the states with elections in 2016 have doubled their debt in 6 years, according to government data. The federal audit office points to irregularities in $13 billion of federal funds transferred to states. Elections in states in 2016 shows public discontent with poor governance, corruption, and the lack of rule of law. This is leading to a close election in Veracruz with the PAN and PRD parties challenging the PRI in the state.

Gasoline prices in Europe are much higher because of the gasoline tax. In many countries many of the taxes on gasoline are fixed and as a result it does not move up as crude prices go up. The proportion of the price at the pump which is the gasoline tax is larger in Europe which makes an increase in the underlying price of crude oil less keenly felt. Europe has invested in public transportation and Europeans use smaller cars which compensate for the higher price. Japan and S. Korea also follow the European practice of higher gasoline taxes which encourages conservation and the use of smaller cars.

Moody's senior analyst based in Beijing, Yvonne Zhang, says China's National Audit Office's estimate of the banks loans as part of China's total local government debt of 10.7 trillion yuan ($1.65 trillion) is understated. The Audit Office estimated bank loans to be 8.5 trillion yuan. Moody's says this is understated by 3.5 trillion yuan or about $540 billion. Moody's sees the delinquency ratio of these loans between 50 and 75%. With these figures it sees 8-12% of bank loans in China's banking system as non-performing loans.

Justin Lahart points out that concealed in the good profit performance of Ford Motor for the third quarter 2012 is a cause for concern. Ford market share of light vehicle sales in the U.S. market declined to 15.3% in the first 9 months of 2012 from 16.6% in 2011, according to WardsAuto. Ford's quality in the Consumer Reports' annual reliability survey shows Ford ranking 27th of 28 brands.

He says growth is slower now in the U.S. with changes in the global economy and any growth killing tax increases or disincentives for investment are risky changes. Stephen Green, head of research for Standard Chartered, says if anyone is printing money, it appears to be China's central bank, not the US. During a meeting of the Central Economic Work Conference in Beijing goals are being set for the next 12 months. One expert predicts the governmet may set official targets of 4% inflation (it is running at about 4.7% at this time) and 6.5 trillion yuan of lending in new loans in 2011, compared to 7.5 trillion in 2010. Questions remain whether China can manage a soft landing after the huge surge in lending and the continued asset bubble.

Germany's economy has shown strong growth of 3.6% in 2010. Germany has benefitted from globalization, both on the demand side and the supply side. The euro provided additional demand from countries like Spain and Greece. And German machinery and automobile manufacturers see rising demand from China. Germany also has lower priced labor in Eastern European countries. The Mittelstand, the smaller companies making all types of machinery, are a strong part of the economy. And the Hartz reforms under former chancellor Schroder, have helped reform the labor market. Also German unions have been fairly restrained during this period of reforms. German schemes for retaining workers during the downturn helps retain core skills and supports a quick rebound. All this is helping make Germany look atttractive as a model to follow in the European Union. There are weaknesses in the lack of strong domestic spending, which means Germany is too dependent on demand in China and other countries. Consider not only the cost of gasoline per gallon but also the higher fuel efficiency of cars and light trucks. The comparison is with the profligate consumption and larger cars before 1978, when gas hit 20 cents per mile on average, today it is 15 cents per mile on average, these figures factor in inflation which should be taken into account in coming up with the real number. Gas cost less in the 60's and 70's but fuel efficiency was pretty poor in those days, and cars were much larger, so per mile gas cost even more before fuel efficiency made big strides in the eighties and then again reverted to the pre 1978 days as gas prices dropped and consumption jumped, in the 90's. Conclusion: high gas prices are needed for the market mechanisms to work, and incentives to develop more fuel efficient vehicles if those vehicles demand increases.

How the similiar cars can have different effects the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky. The Pontiac sports car sold well for 12-18 months and is now losing sales and has to be sold with incentives whereas the Saturn Sky is in big demand and is helping the whole Saturn lineup by boosting its image- Saturn sales are up 15% this year whereas Pontiac sales are down 17% this year, and GM has 5 months of Solstice inventory compared to 1 month of Sky inventory. Ofcourse GM also spends moreon marketing Saturn but its also because of years of neglect of the Pontiac brand. When was Solstice introduced and when was the Sky, what are the chances that after 12-18 months the Sky will also cool off if the Sky cam in much later. But in creating buzz for the brand the Saturn Sky has definitely worked. Ofcourse the Saturn brand has other things going for it to have increased sales.
