U.S. President Richard Nixon adopted Keynesian policies to boost the economy after tightening monetary policy failed in 1970. In 1971 Nixon turned to higher fiscal spending to get the economy closer to full employment. He also adopted wage and price controls. By 1972 the economy had recovered, inflation was at 5.7% and unemployment at 4.9%, and Nixon won re-election. This was the only recovery in an election year since World War II. In international affairs Nixon's policy was to leave the Bretton Woods system and floating the dollar. With a new administration in 1974 inflation surged to 11% and unemployment to 5.6%, because wage and price controls worked only for a short period.

With the sale of its stake in TNK-BP to Rosneft BP will have 19.75% of Rosneft. It will lose TNK-BP's oil production of 986 billion barrels of oil equivalent, and it will gain 900 million barels from its share of Rosneft output. BP's oil reserves will increase by 12.5% after the deal. TNK-BP has paid annual dividend of an average of $2.2 billion since 2004, BP payout from Rosneft is estimated at $500 million. BP's share of the new Rosneft after the deal would be $3.6 billion in expected earnings for 2013 compared to $4.1 billion from the 50% share of TNK-BP. Some of this dilution may be restored by share buybacks by BP.

This New York Times report shows that Rick Santorum sponsored legislation that would have helped Universal Health Services, a Pennsylvania based hospital management company, win hundreds of millions of dollars in additional Medicare funds for its hospitals in Puerto Rico. After losing his Senate reelection bid in 2006, Santorum joined the board of Universal Health Services, and was paid $395,000 in director's fees and stock options. Santorum also worked as a consultant to Consol Energy after his failed reelection bid. This was after advocating policies that would help the Pennsylvania gas and coal producer. The Times also reports that during the time Santorum was in the Senate he had developed close ties to Washington lobbyists.

Lim Chow Kiat, chief investment officer of GIC Pte. Ltd, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, says he sees returns on financial assets in developed markets being much lower in future years, including possible negative returns, because of a sharp runup in recent years and changing monetary policy. He sees more opportunities in emerging markets because of younger populations and opportunities from overhauls to economic structures and behaviour. He says he will still look for opportunties in developed country companies that have significant international expansion. GIC invested $1 billion in Indian online retailer Flipkart recently, $680 million in Bank of the Philippine Island, and $1.3 billion in the Time Warner Center building in New York along with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

David Blanchford of Dartmouth College and Adam Posen of the Peterson Institute of International Economics argue in a recent paper that the true indicator of unemployment in this economy -with a low participation rate and millions dropping out of the labor market unable to find work- is the wage growth. This is particularly true with the U.S. Labor Department report of 288,000 new jobs in 2014 and a 6.3% unemployment rate, yet wages flat for March and April 2014, and no improvement in the participation rate. Blanchford says one should look at the wage growth and consider the rest to be noise. The Yellen Fed is looking closely at the participation rate.

The Labor Department reports jobs increased by a seasonally adjusted 203,000 in November 2013, and the unemployment rate dropped to 7% from 7.3%. In the past a decrease in the unemployment rate was partly a result of people leaving the labor force. Job gains have come from lower wage jobs in retail and restaurants, which raises new doubts about the quality of job gains. About one third of the job gains in November were in lower paid jobs- retailers added 22,000 jobs, restaurants and hotels 17,000, Temp help services 16,000. In November 2013 27,000 jobs were added in manufacturing. Overall 11 million American are unemployed and about 4 million are unemployed for more than 6 months.

Gisele Freund's photographic account of how a world changes, the world of her childhood at the turn of the century Berlin (she was born in 1908) and then after her return to Berlin in 1957 before the wall went up. This was an unfamiliar world to her. Her pictures are at the Willy Brandt Haus exhibition in Berlin, and at the Ephraim Palais for the pictures from 1957 and 1962. In the subsequent 50 years the Berlin Wall was to go up and come down, bringing more change and a new Berlin different from that in the late fifties, and a even more different Germany. Some of the airlines that are seeing significant increases in airline passengers are Etihad Airways, and Quatar Airways, others like Ryanair, Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, Southwest, singapore, Cathay and LAN airlines are seeing increases in passegers. This separates them from airlines especially in the USA that are having to pay higher fuel prices with a weaker dollar, and lower proportion of international traffic and a very competitive market. As some airlines are shrinking others are buying new fuel efficient planes and moving into routes left by the shrinking airlines, and using their cash reserves to hedge fuel costs, and some like Singapore Airlines are attracting customers with premium services for premium prices.

The UN Report on Afghanistan's opium growing areas and harvest for 2008. The sucess in the north but the drought and poverty and hunger there after other crops are not doing so well. The failure in the insurgent areas in the south where opium growing in Helmand province makes it the larges opium growing country if it were so in the world says the report. The Affordable Care Act or Obamacare gave families of 4 with incomes of less than 125,000 or single income less than $60,000 a chance to buy insurance with federal subsidies. When these subsidies were increased under the IRA Act of president Biden the enrolment has doubled in the last 5 years to $24 million. These subsidies expire in 2025. Under the One Big Beautiful Act the policy of subsidies for ACA is not being renewed when it expires in 2025. This shows the band aid approach of Obama to healthcare and the lack of a comprehensive approach. The policy on migrants during the Obama and Biden administration also stretched public funding resources. Insurance companies now plant to make up for the los of subsidies from the government by raising prices for this subpopulation in a broken healthcare system in the US by 15-20%. This report in WSJ shows a young woman on ACA insurance in Illinois with a payment of $590 a month to Blue Cross of Illinois facing a new payment of $678, almost the size of a mortgage. ...

Donald Trump is acquitted in the second impeachment trial with a vote in the Senate of 53 in favor to 47 against. A two thirds majority is required to impeach a president. Senators Burr of North Carolina and Cassidy of Louisiana were Republicans who joined the expected ones to vote for impeachment- the Republicans Mitt Romney of Utah, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The Republican defense lawyer insisted that Trump's speech to his supporters was not an intention to incite them on the day of the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021 but an expression of his rights to free speech guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution First Amendment. He made the point that the prosecution lawyers had selectively focused attention on the words "fight like hell" and taken them out of the entire context in which they were made, ignoring key parts of Mr. Trump's speech. The defense argued that the president had already left office and this made an impeachment unconstitutional. Seventy five million voters voted for Mr. Trump and he cited this as the most number of votes won by a sitting president. President Biden is shifting his attention to the president's agenda and needs Republican support to pass key legislation including financial help to households, unemployed, and business to recover from the pandemic. The U.S. health effort behind the vaccination drive and seeing the struggle in Europe to access key medical supplies of vaccine is also leading to new efforts to move beyond the rhetoric to the hard work ahead with support of all parties. As part of this the trial once it reached the Senate was quickly resolved in about 5 days. The defense used only a small fraction of the time allotted with bipartisan effort to not let the trial drag on, bipartisan effort to putting some statements simply on the record and not calling witnesses.   ...

Dirk Kurbjuweit of Spiegel says Merkel needs to show strong leadership to overcome the challenges with the rise of right wing populists in the U.S., Britain and France. He points to the leadership shown in the latter part of Kohl's term in office to promote German reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The challenges include talking to the German people directly in a convincing way, and meeting the day to day challenges of life for the people with investments in education, health care, infrastructure so that people see real significant improvement. It is even necessary to reorder priorities such as the shift from nuclear energy so that this challenge is met. It is not enough to hope that more Christian Democrats turn out to vote than Social Democrats, that the fifth of Germans who feel the economy is not working for them and feel threatened by immigration see real changes being made to address their concerns.

Krugman says there is cause for concern from May's U.S. jobs report of only 38,000 jobs added- low even with Verizon strike jobs added back in- compared to the 200,000 a month average since Jan 2013. One cannot read too much into one months report, yet the political uncertainty in a election year adds to the problem. The low interest rates near zero offering little possibility for rate cuts, make it difficult to come up with a policy response. Under a Clinton administration the infrastructure spending option would face Republican resistance.  It is not clear how a Trump administration would respond. Krugman says the jobs figure reflects a stronger dollar- a result partly of the Fed's plan to raise rates- that is hurting U.S. exports.

Trofimov of the WSJ gives exceptional insights into Iraq in 2017 under prime minister Abadi. Iraq he points out survives as a democracy under Abadi with free elections unlike most of the Middle East. Even pro-Iranian militia leaders who fought U.S. troops are willing to concede that after many mistakes by the U.S. in the region there is hope and the U.S. action led eventually to this positive outcome.  Under prime minister Haidar Abadi Iraq has an opposition with TV channels opposed to the Abadi government freely operating. Abadi is a British educated engineer and says here that he believes in a multi ethnic democracy for Iraq. He was chosen to replace the openly sectarian government of Nouri Makliki which led to the loss of parts of Iraq to Islamic State. With that part of the conflict coming to a close and Iraq regaining most of what was Iraq before the conflict Mr. Abadi's stature has risen. Abadi says he will bring all pro-Shiite militias under government control. The lessons of the last couple of years, the failures of sectarianism under Maliki leading to the rise of Islamic State are not lost on the Abadi government. It is taking steps to maintain friendly relations with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and present a multi ethnic image. Abadi and Maliki both are from the Shiite Daiwa party. During the recent dispute with the Kurdish government of Mr. Barzani, the legitimacy of a democratic government played a role in winning over Kurdish politicians so that control of the oil rich province of Kirkuk was reclaimed by the central government. Mr. Barzani was seen as overstaying his term by 2 years. This has further increased the credibility of the Abadi government. Particularly as it lets a free press and freedom of expression operate in Iraq through the media and respects this. Abadi says: "We suffered a lot under a dictatorship. We should never allow dictatorship to come back." New elections are to be held in Iraq with Mr. Maliki representing other parts of the Daiwa party, elections in Kurdistan region with politicians opposed to Mr. Barzani taking part, and in other parts of Iraq. Iraq's democracy is still struggling, but there is hope if the lessons of recent years of sectarianism are not lost for the leaders and peoples of Iraq's different ethnic regions. Just as Iranian election gave a new term to the moderates under prime minister Rouhani there is a sense that the elections will do the same in Iraq. Rouhani won 57% of the vote with 23 million votes to 38% for the other candidate Mr. Raisi who won 15 million votes. Except for the eastern part of the country Mr. Rouhani prevailed in all the provinces of Iran.  ...

Annalena Baerbock is leading the Greens Party in Germany to a new poll high. Almost all parties lost points in the poll for Bild Am Sonntag and the Greeens gained. Coming at a time when the German public is weary after the eurozone financial crisis, the migrant crisis and now the coronavirus pandemic Annalena Baerbock brings a fresh approach to issues in Germany. Her call for a broad tent and the solidarity in the party with co-leader Robert Habeck are getting a good response from the German people.  Greens are ahead by 2 percentage points to 28%, CDU/CSU down by 2 points to 27%, SDU down by 2 points to 13%, AfD and Left Party both down by 1 point, AfD at 10% and Left Party at 7%. Greens present the idea of a new departure for Germany to protect the climate, reduce inequality and start a new Europe. Annalena Baerbock talks about this in her campaign as chancellor candidate for the September 2021 German elections- "we must make changes to create a fair country." The German people are listening after years of disappointment with the SPD under Schroeder, the Merkel years when Germany tackled crises of eurozone and migrants with no new direction for a brighter future,  the AfD creating new divisions and waning in approval, the lockdowns leading to social divisions, rising inequality.  ...

The components in the 6.1% drop in GDP for 1st quarter 2009, from the prior quarter. See the all important graph that shows how things in the breakdown look, and how the economy is behaving, and how it might behave in the future. What is the impact of a10% drop in world trade? For the US which was abig importer, the last 2 quarters saw a shift in consumer buying habits, as economy became the norm, and frugality was in. Imports drop by 6.05%. But exports drop too, with fewer purchases of products the USA makes. THis drop was 4.06%. Consumer spending collapsed in the 4th quarter of 2008. A rebound ocurred in the 1st quarter 2009, as consumer confidence improved as aresult of strong government intervention through the $787 billion stimulus bill, and the new budget that funded priorities in health, education and energy, and supported local governments spending. Consumer spending went up by 1.5%. Residential investment went down by close to the same amount - 1.36%. What was happening in manufacturing capacity utilization. This dropped as inventories were run down, and the change in inventories was a drop of 2.79%. The feeling here is that as inventories were run down there is now the prospect of increasing production and capacity utilization. But unemployment and job losses are not figured into this, and the unknown impact of the new frugaility of the American consumer as it sets in in earnest. If consumer spending remains sluggish, then there is less prospect for increasing capacity utilization. Manufacturing capacity will either be reduced as plants close as in the auto industry, or it will remain unused. And the prospect of exports picking up the slack is remote. This gets one to the crux of the matter which is declining investment in buildings, and equipment. As businesses pull back and lay off employees, a process that will continue for many quarters into 2010 and beyond, with credit tight and demand sluggish at best, the prospect here is of large contribution to negative GDP numbers in the future. For 2009 1st quarter the decline in nonresidential investment was 4.68%, the largest component and the decisive part impacting jobs and production....

A landmark ruling and a huge win for consumers and for the country, as the Supreme Court says states can enforce fair-lending laws and other consumer protection measures against the largest banks in the USA. The Suprem COurt said that the rules issued by the federal banking regulators like the Comptroller of the Currency under the NationalBank Act - a law passed in 1864- could not block sfforts by the states to enforce their laws. For the country its a win because the lack of enforcement of state laws only allowed abuses in the subprime area to continue and helped create the subprime mortgage crisis. The case began with letters by the New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in 2005 to several national banks including CItigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo inquiring about lending practices to minorites. The letters referred to "troubling" disparities that suggested black and Hispanic borrowers were being charged disproportionately higher interest rates on mortgages compared to whites. THe letters asked for information "in lieu of subpoena." Protection of minorities and the weak in American society is part of the moral fabric of America and that it had eroded in recent years is evident in the manner the banking sector responded. A banking trade group and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency brought a lawsuit to block the New York Attorney General's request saying that the National Bank Act nd rules issued by the Bush administration in 2004 gave that type of authority to comptroller and prohibited such efforts by the states. And then afederal district court ruled against the states, aand the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Court affirmed that decision. These are instances where the system failed to protect the weak even with the laws that states had on their books. Justice Scalia voted in favor with a 5-4 vote to allow states to enforce consumer protection laws, even though his written opinion was based on an interpretation of what "visitorial powers" of a federal regulator were, and not about the importance of fair lending in the proper functioning of the American economy. Justices Roberts, Alito, Kennedy and Thomas voted against....

Peter Altmaier is director of the chancellery in Berlin, and is the person closest to Angela Merkel. This report in the Economist points out that Altmaier has played a critical role in steps taken by Merkel- as chief whip in parliament for the CDU during the Greece financial crisis and bailouts, as environment minister implementing the program away from coal based electricity, and in negotiating deals such as the deal with Turkey on refugees, and now with Brexit negotiations. Merkel has asked Altmaier to write her manifesto for the September 2017 election. A member of the CDU's liberal wing, Altmaier is known for being a scholar on German history, especially Bismarck, and a workaholic. Here he is mentioned as a bridge maker for the CDU to the Greens Party and was part of a group of CDU and Green Party politicians who met at an Italian restaurant in Bonn. As the moderates are now dominant in the Greens Party, a CDU coalition with the Greens could be shaped by Altmaier if the election results move in that direction. ...

This report  by Joshua Partlow in the Washington Post shows frequent and extensive contacts between Mexican officials and the Trump administration. Skeptical experts say this is mostly damage control. Yet it has helped defuse tensions on NAFTA and other issues, in some situations having president Trump reverse his stance. Mexico sends 80% of exports to the U.S., making this relationship crucial. Yet the scaling down of plans for a border wall, the emergence of a solution to NAFTA through changes without canceling NAFTA with support from Wilbur Ross, the Commerce Secretary, show the dialogue has preserved relations. Uncertainties loom such as the trade stance of president Trump, and the potential of front runner Lopez Obrador from the opposition party to emerge in upcoming elections as the new president of Mexico. Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico who was a close contendor in previous elections, says he will take a different stand than the current government in negotiations. Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray made 12 trips to Washington in 2017 as part of the effort by the Mexican government to preserve NAFTA with some changes. He has relationships with John Kelly and Jared Kushner in the Trump administration that have facilitated his efforts.  ...
