China and India pass Mexico as immigration to the U.S. from Mexico declines rapidly, as a result of an improving Mexican economy, the 2008-2011 recession in the U.S. with sharp drop in jobs for construction, lower birthrates, and stricter U.S. law enforcement at the U.S. border with Mexico. Researchers using the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau found immigration from China increased to 147,000 from China, 129,000 from India, as it declined to 125,000 from Mexico, for 2013. This Survey counts a person as an immigrant for a particular year who says he was living abroad previously. Mexico shows a decline from 400,000 in 2000, with steady decline for every year after 2005. In 2000 India and China were at about 75,000, and did not cross the 100,000 mark till 2007. Other Asian countries are also at the top including S. Korea, Philippines and Japan. William Frey documents this surge in diversity in the U.S., -which is supplemented by now common intermarraige between young people from different countries of origin- in his book "Diversity Explosion."...

A four year U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study is put out in June 2015. It confirms that fracking can be carried out safely without contamination of drinking water. The EPA says there are a small number of contaminated drinking water wells and describes the vulnerabilities. Thomas Burke, deputy assistant administrator of the EPA's office of research and development says: "The hydraulic fracking activities in the U.S. are carried out in a way that have not led to widespread, systematic impact on drinking water resources. In fact, the number of the documented impacts to drinking water is relatively low compared to the number of fractured wells." Rob Jackson, an earth sciences professor at Stanford University, who has studied the environmental impact of fracking, says he agrees with this conclusion of no widespread impact, but says the report needed to be more comprehensive. Burke said in a conference call that the main issue was "understanding the vulnerabilities so we can address the vulnerabilities and practice hydraulic fracking in the safest possible way."...

The corruption inquiry in Turkey in 2013 on prime minister Erdogan and the AKP's ties to the construction industry. The rift between sufi preacher Fethullah Gulen, and the prime minister of Turkey, over policies that steer Turkey away from the west and the concentration of power in the AKP. Huseyn Gulerce, who is close to Gulen, says Gulen is critical of Turkey's drifting away from seeking membership of the European Union and not conducting democratic changes. Gulen and Erdogan worked together to bring the AKP to power in elections and reduce the military's influence in politics and government. Gulen left Turkey in 1999 after being accused of trying to turn Turkey into a Islamic state and has settled in Pennsylvania, U.S.. Erdogan is a one time Mayor of Istanbul, and critics say the construction industry business interests and Erdogan have ignored zoning laws to move ahead with haphazard development of the city pushing out old time residents. This was also a complaint of protesters in the summer 2013 protests in Taksim Square, Istanbul....

The unexpected and rapid price drop in 2014 for ultra high definition UHDTV televisions. The price declines are driven by Chinese manufacturers who are using the large Chinese market and Chinese buyers eager to try out the latest technology to lower prices. NPD DisplaySearch estimates 2013 shipments of UHDTV's at 1.9 million units globally, of this 1.7 million were sold in China. Estimates for UHDTV for 2014 are 12.7 million units globally and China will be 78% of this. Sales in North America are estimated for 2014 at 800,000 units. The sales are surprising because there is hardly any UHDTV content available. Japanese makers use special chips that enable HDTV content to show improvement on UHDTV sets to justify higher prices. The price drops are steep- from $4503 to $973 to about one fourth in the Chinese market and from $18,667 to $1986 or about one ninth in the U.S. market for 2014. The price competition from Chinese manufacturers is likely to affect the profitability of Samsung, Sony and Panasonic in televisions....

It has also led to worsening of relations with allies Saudis and Turkey who called for a more active U.S. support of moderates in Syria. In the process what was supposed to be an Arab Spring has turned into a return of extremism and dampening of the hopes of the people in the Middle East for economic progress. After a trillion dollars spent in Afghanistan and Iraq and large sacrifices by the military letting the situation unravel in this manner is incomprehensible....

A WSJ study showing the plans offered under the new U.S. Health Care Law in the state of Oregon. For young people ages 18-34 earning about $17,000 and uninsured the law offers a bargain with insurance premiums monthly at about $52 and deductibles as low as $100, because of higher subsidies. The situation changes at incomes of $29,000 when the deductibles are about $6300 and the premiums per month at about $147 a month, because subsidies are much smaller, or deductibles dropping to $2500 at $172 in monthly premium. The federal subsidies disappear for single people under age 30 earning much more than $26,000 because of the way the law places them to specific plans on each state's exchange. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are 11.6 million people in the U.S. ages 18-34 who are uninsured. The federal government has to get as many of these people to get insurance so that the cost of medical care for the elderly can be supported.

Eisinger says the Federal Reserve's staff plays an important role in regulatory reform. Diversification has helped BHP weather the decline in commodities prices better than Rio Tinto, Anglo-American and Vale. BHP is expected to report profits of $12.5 billion for the last fiscal year. BHP is also in the oil and gas business, in addition to iron, ore, copper, coal and aluminium. This has made it possible to take writedowns of $5.5 billion and still make stable profits. Andrew Mackenzie, the new CEO of BHP, is a Scotsman who is focussing on the productivity of capital and cost-cutting. BHP announced $1.9 billion in cost savings since July 2012. Mackenzie's goal is to reduce capital expenditures from $18 billion today to $15 billion or less in 2-3 years. Capital is tied up in incomplete projects taken up in the boom period of higher prices, and the process of reducing capital expenditures is gradual. Capital expenditures in the mining business increased dramatically from $20 billion to $120 billion from 2003 to 2012. For most of this period China's economy registered growth rates of over 10%....

He was in corporate strategy at Walt Disney Co. before he joined Comcast in 1998 to develop corporate strategy and acquisitions under Mr. Roberts. The opportunity at NBC gives Comcast a shot at building a business that spans its cable business and a content development company. Operating cash flow for NBCU is up 21% for the second quarter of 2013....

Robert Morgenthau, a former district attorney for New York County, says the American deportation effort is putting about 1000 people out of the U.S. every day. He calls it a deportation effort that has gone wildly astray. Here he says the new leadership of Jeh Johnson is likely to be better than her predecessor Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in ensuring that the agency can move in a direction that ensures fairness for immigrants who are law abiding. Morgenthau says in his long experience as district attorney he has learned that the trust and cooperation of the immigrant community in New York is essential to going after the criminal elements that are a danger to society. And some of this trust has been eroded by the actions of the ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, part of Homeland Security Department, through large scale and record breaking deportation approaching about 400,000 a year. Krugman points out that the inflation adjusted wages of non-supervisory workers in the retail field in America has declined by 30% since 1973. He says there are no adverse effects on unemployment because workers in retail are not competing with workers in other countries as happens in manufacturing. They are also some of the lowest paid workers to begin with, and the numbers are not small. One estimate is that here are 30 million workers who would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage from the current level of $7.25 to $10.10. State by state comparisons provide proof of this as no evidence of losses in employment are to be seen when one state has raised the minimum wage and another neighboring state has not. Germany is facing a similiar problem of low paid temporary workers and a new coalition government is planning an increase in the minimum wage in 2014 as a response to increasing inequality and disparity in incomes developing in the last two decades.

Thomas Fuller of the NYT cites Thai historian Nidhi Eoseewong about the social transformation taking place in Thailand and the emergence of farmers in the northeast as part of the middle class. This change is a result of Asia's rapid economic growth and brings with it new tensions in the social and political fabric of the country. Suthep Thangsuban, a leader of the Democrat Party, is leading protests in Nov. 2013. Because the northeast Thailand voters form about one third of the vote, the older established Democratic Party- allied to the middle class in Bangkok- has failed to win elections since 1992. The established older middle class wants to see less electoral participation that diminishes its role and is pushing for a Senate with half of the members appointed by civil servants and judges. The party of Thaksin Shinawatra and his sister, the current prime minister, appeals to the northeastern voters who want greater representation. These issues are behind the protests in Bangkok and are not likely to be resolved anytime soon as it will take time to integrate the northeast....

She says no one listens to people in the northeast and northern region of Thailand around Chinag Mai where most of her support lies. She was only 18 when her mother died and her older brother, a former prime minister, is seen by her as more of a senior figure. Protesters in Bangkok see her brother Thaksin Shinawatra, a Thai businessman in London as the one who runs the government's policies. The country is badly split between urban Bangkok and the rural regions in the north. The military ousted Thaksin in 2006 and protesters where shot in 2010 in a crackdown. The latest episode of confrontation between the two parties reflecting the two regions is a followup to this, as an amnesty bill was introduced by Yingluck which would let her brother return to Thailand. The interview was setup at an airbase outside Bangkok, as the country remains deeply divided and protesters occupy most of Bangkok....

President Obama will nominate Jacob Lew for Treasury Secretary to replace Timothy Geithner. In making this decision Obama stayed within his close advisors. Lew has held firm in budget negotiations, at one point walking out, and at another point in negotiations of the last two years saying flatly Medicaid is off the table. This signals Obama is not going to give in to Republican demands without a fight. In picking the 57 year old Lew, Obama is choosing someone who has substantial experience in budget matters and in working with Democratic leaders, all the way back to working with Speaker Tip O'Neill from the Reagan days. He was head of the Office of Management and Budget, and is currently White House Chief of Staff. He was chief operating officer of Citi Global Wealth Management and Citi Alternative Investments for 2 years, which suffered large losses in the 2008 financial crisis, but was not closely involved in the way decisions on investing were made. He was brought to Citigroup by Robert Rubin, a former Treasury Secretary under Clinton....

BP's global oil outlook 2013-2030 shows demand from China is still a big part of the story two decades from now. Factor in demand from Russia, the Middle East and India, yet China still dominates the picture for growth in demand. For 2000-2011 China's share of global demand growth for energy was 55%, under BP's outlook China's share for 2011-2030 drops to 43%. Fossil fuels still dominate. The continuing dependence on fossil fuels is also the perspective of Shell CEO Voser in an interview with the WSJ in Jan 2013, who also sees strong growth in shale gas supplies from China. Coal will account for 61% of global demand growth to 2030, oil 43%, gas 25%, in BP's outlook. If Voser is right and with the need for cleaner burning natural gas gas considering high air pollution in Chinese cities, gas may take a bigger share than 25%. Shell CEO Voser looks out 4 decades from now and sees one third of global demand coming from renewable energy, 10% from nuclear, and the rest from fossil fuels.

Richard Posner, who teaches at the University of Chicago, and is federal appellate judge, takes an incisive look at the economic crisis. Posner says this was not a failure in the sense of irresponsibility alone of people involved, but a failure of capitalism, and that capitalism is prone to failure unless properly governed. Markets left to their own devices can fail, monetary policy is not enough to counteract other deep seated problems. Under capitalist system people can make individually rational decisions like continuing to invest in mortgage securtite if they were financial institutions, or losing the profits to be made, and collectively make irrational and in time enormously costly decisions, with no less consequences on an individual basis when things collapse. "We are learning," he says "that we need a more active and intelligent government to keep our model of a capitalist economy from running off the rails." But that may be nothing more than returning to common sense, or a healthy dose of skepticism for overblown claims for any system or form of economics or politics. ...

Mercedes sales have seen asharp decline. May 2009 sales were down 33.4%% from May 2008 for the US region. Steve Cannon who heads Mercedes' marketing effort continues to believe that its performance, innovation and technology that will bring buyers back to Mercedes. The company's $75 million ad campaign in the USA for its updated E-Class Series cars, show tv ad spots with scenes of families admiring classic Mercedes cars at the Mercedes Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany, and scenes of the car down a forested road. The car then bursts through the wall of the museum, and takes its place alongside other Mercedes cars. In contrast other manufacturers, GM, Hyundai, Honda and others are taking account of the economic downturn and lower consumer spending. Hyundai offers to help customers pay for the cars if they lose their jobs, which GM and Ford has matched. Honda is also keeping pricing emphasis. Mercedes only brings up the price at the end of its ad with the number $48,600 shown, a 9% drop in price for the updated E Class Series....

One of the big changes is to give responsibility to younger managers. Chairman Whitacre's marching orders are to cut executive ranks and gve responsibility to a whole new group of younger managers. Performance reviews and goal setting is short-one page. The organizational chart for vehicle reviews that required 70 or so executives to pass on it is gone. Product decisions are made at weekly meetings with the President present. And people are not supposed to fear speaking up if a change is needed to what they are doing for a product. Debate is in and seniority is not supposed to be the factor it once was. 50 page presentations are out. Reuss, who heads global engineering, describes his start in 1983 as a student intern, and the lack of debate that made it impossible for him to say anything about the failed Aztek van, that his bosses might not like to hear.Its as if these types of product decisions were somehow the work of higherups with managers not having an equal or more important say....

Honda Motor Company will have one bright spot as sales of motor bikes increase from 13.9 million to 14.9 million for 2009. Honda two wheelers sell briskly in Asia and South America, where they are considered low-price necessities. On the other hand Honda's auto sales will drop by 400,000 to 3.5 million for the fiscal year ending in March 2009. Honda will post a profit of $860 million or 80 million yen for this fiscal year, down 87%, by contrast Toyota will post a loss of 350 billion yen, and Nissan a loss of 265 billion yen. Honda is seeing huge growth in markets like Indonesia where $50 can be a down payment on a motorcycle., Honda sold 2.8 million motorbikes there up 34%.. Now sales are predicted by Honda Motor to drop to somewhere between 2.1 and 2.5 million bikes. Honda markets heavily to people under 25 in Indonesia, who make up half the population of 240 million people. Honda is also working on lowering costs of manufacturing by focussing on production in India, China, Thailand and Vietnam. ...

Sir Fred Goodwin left RBS with a 693,000 British pounds annual that was arranged in the contract. At the end of 2007 Sir Fred was owed 597,000 British pounds, but when he was forced out in October 2008, Sir Fred 50 years old, was given credit for 10 years more work, increasing the payout to 693,000 British pounds a year. With the highest annual loss in British history of 24 billion pounds reported by RBS for 2008, the government is asking Sir Fred to take areduced pension. This has resulted in a nasty exchange with Sir Fred who has refused, and the British public and the people of Edinburgh especially are furious. "There is asense of fury that the government seems impotent, unable to act when the man chiefly responsible for the bank's collapse is able to walk away with apension that others can only dream of- and at the ripe olfd age of 50!" said David Pickering, aspokesman for the Edinburgh Association of Community Councils. "And what is worse that we, the British taxpayers are actually paying for it."...

Unlike the turnaroungd he achieved at Corus steel group where the booming demand from China for steel helped, this time the auto market in Europe is declining by about 30%. He has to navigate betwen the interests of the Peugeot family which has 45% of the voting rights, employees who are affected by the cost cutting, the French government which has required no closing of factories for as long as the company receives governement aid. Peugeot-Citroen received a low interest loan of 3 billion euros from the French government. Questions he will have to address, as do all auto manufacturers in the USA and Europe relate to overcapacity as demand declines. And for Peugeot this has to be tackled without factory closures. And the other major issue facing auto manufacturers worldwide is how much to focus on the fuel efficient small car segment. Peugeot has key strengths in this segment and Varin may decide on refocussing on this segment....

Older homeowners like Carol Couts of Yuba City, California, who were persuaded to take on mortgages they could not afford on their social security checks which is all they had, often fradulently, are in a position to lose their homes and have nowhere to go. There are say home loan counselors, hundreds of thousands of people like this in places like the Central Valley of California. They do not qualify for the mortgage relief programs of the Obama administration which typically reduce the interest rate and stretch the payments over longer periods to lower the payments substantially. These are people on social security checks, which may be their entire source of earnings, and this is low enough so that the only way they can get relief is to rescind the fradulent loan entirely or cut the principal, things lenders are unwilling to take. These elderly people in such a precarious situation could end up being a blight on the nation, as something like this has not been allowed to happen in the entire post war period....
