NYT's Thomas Edsall does a great service to America by pulling together different views on the causes of the alienation of the rural population in the US from the Democratic party. The situation in Wisconsin with Ron Johnson winning in that state on the back of resentment of the rural population is shown. It all started say experts with the the so called Third Way that turned out not to exist of Tony Blair in Britain and Bill Clinton in the US that quietly accepted the Reagan view of the world and moved the Democratic party in a different and unknown direction. Obama made things worse by embracing Tech and tech companies into the Democratic party, and ignored the concerns of rural and agricultural parts of the US. The Obama period continued the Clinton policies of letting China takeover America's position in manufacturing, and allowing the offshoring of much of American industry to China. By not closing the chapter of America's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq president Obama lost many critical years. Mr. Biden now has the extraordinary challenge of not meekly accepting what has happened knowing that it is not in the spirit of the party of FDR and Truman, that the Democratic party will stand or fall with the common man, that it will take some time to recover from these missteps, that it is in the interests of America and the American people, and for what America stands for in the world. It is all embodied in what Carl Sandburg once wrote- "The People, Yes!" ...

WSJ asks the question how are companies run in America by CEO's during the 9 month old pandemic? To answer that question it looks at Emerson Electric, based in Ferguson, Missouri, with its 90,000 employees in the U.S. and around the world. David Farr is CEO of American conglomerate Emerson Electric that makes products in a number of industries, for longer than most CEO's in America. At 65 years today, he has managed the company since he became CEO at the age of 45. It has 8000 employees in China and 10,000 in Mexico, and plants in the midwest, all hard hit by the pandemic. Add to this racial riots after killing of a black man in Ferguson, Missouri, and you have a challenging situation for any CEO.    As a son of a plant manager at a Corning plant in Corning, New York and growing up in a manufacturing environment in England, his instincts are that customers are what matter the most. That shrinking production could lead to some competitors making it and others shrinking if they did not act quickly to protect their supply chains. His goal is to keep factories running to have parts ready for their customers who made the finished product in the oil and gas industry and in factories where Emerson supplied the automated processes. As a first step he has 7 charter planes fly parts from a Nanjing factory to Shanghai when the trucks stopped moving. He campaigns with the Mexican ambassador to the U.S. to have the company listed as essential business to be kept open in a lockdown but fails. He gets up at 5.30 am and works till 8 pm and spends most nights reading, lounging with 2 spaniels, and going to bed early. He tells his son who works at Caterpillar company to get back to work as soon as he can as he believes being on the job is really really important. Yet he is worried up his daughter working as a pastry chef in New York and wants her to come back home to the midwest. He is a manager in the old style saying he wouldn't hire American workers because the Obama administration was out to destroy American manufacturing with its environmental rules forgetting that he was doing just that in the end-  and what had America and the concept of a free nation and a free people with opportunities for all have anything to do with like or dislike of any president or party. He also has his quirks, keeping 5 baseball bats and swinging a bat while he took walks and did some thinking. Passionate, hard working, and getting it done he keeps Emerson in the game as an industrial competitor from the U.S. ...

In a historic visit Chinese president Xi Jinping visits Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram). Chinese Buddhist scholar and monk Xuanzang spent time in India, arriving in 627 AD to look for Buddhist manuscripts in Nalanda and other places, returning to China in 643 AD, where he translated these manuscripts deepening China's knowledge of Buddhism. Bodhidharma the son of a Pallava king in southern India left for China in 527 AD bringing Buddhism to China. The Pallava dynasty ruling in southern India at this time had trade, religion and cultural connections with  Fujian province in China. Chinese president Xi was a governor of Fujian province and has a strong interest in history and culture. This follows a visit by Xi to Ahmedabad with its Gujarati culture, and prime minister Modi's visit to Wuhan, China in 2018 to bring the two leaders together in personal relationships. India and China are also increasing cultural contacts and tourist visitors with easy visa arrangements. The idea is that currently a huge gulf in understanding exists between India and China, which contradicts the historically close relationship with the spread of Buddhism from India to China, Japan, and South east Asia. The Liberal Democrats Ed Davey attracted attention with some jet ski stunts just before the election. It showed the lighter side of him. Lib Democrats want to be a friend of Labour and Keir Starmer. Together  the 34 percent Labour voting and 12% Libs, 7% Greens adds to 53% of the vote, Versus the Tory 24% and Reform UK wing of Tory at 14% adding up to 38%. This was apparent in the Q&A session in parliament. Not so well known is that this kind of fits Davey well- he is caring for a teenage disabled son and has cared for his terminally ill mother. The Libs won safe Tory seats is how it all started with someone coming up with the stunts idea to get media to focus on the Libs.  In parliament it is strange as if Libs are the friendly Opposition in Q&A and Sunak unconvincing as Leader of the Opposition. With Tory conservative vote split into Farage and Sunak factions, the Libs won 71 seats. In parliament now Labour has 404 seats, Tories 121, and Davey's Lib Dems 72 seats, Farage Reform just 5 seats after so much work pulling down Tories, and Scottish Nationalists just 9 seats. ...

Dr. Michiaki Takahashi of Osaka, Japan, who developed the chickenpox vaccine in 1972. He decided to do research on a vaccine for chicken pox after his son contracted chickenpox in 1964 and barely survived. At the time he was at Baylor Medical College in Houston. The U.S. alone has about 4 million chickenpox cases a year. This vaccine is now used all over the world.

After resisting calls for impeachment inquiry into president Trump's dealings with Russia during his campaign by the Democrat controlled House of Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi decides to launch the inquiry in September 2019. The issue raised in the inquiry relates to a call made by the president and released transcript, and whistleblower's letter that showed president Trump asking the Ukrainian president to look into corruption of a company in which Democrat Joe Biden's son was a board member.

The U.S. provided funds to Ukraine as it struggled to keep Eastern parts of Ukraine from separating with the help of Russia. Mr. Trump states that the U.S. was left with providing most of the cost without European countries contributing enough, a complaint he has made since the beginning of his campaign about all U.S. allies in American engagements overseas such as Korea and Japan and NATO.

The BJP party under Modi gains 282 seats and sweeps the north, centre and west of the country, and parts of the south and east. Abbott Laboratories agreement to pay $1.6 billion in civil and criminal fines for promoting unapproved off label uses of the neurologic drug Depakote, to sedate older patients in nursing homes. The acting associate attorney general, Tony West, said: "Not only did Abbott engage in off-label promotion, it targeted elderly dementia patients and down played the risks apparent from its own clinical studies." Abbott aggressively promoted its use in nursing homes. It also aggressively promoted the use of the drug for schizophrenia between 2001 and 2006. In 1999 Abbott had to discontinue a clinical trial testing Depakote's effectiveness against dementia after results showed increased incidence of anorexia, drowsiness and dehydration.

Altran says the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has evolved into avery different organization. It has about 100,000 supporters in a population of 80 million. Altran and other experts estimate that at the most it would get about the support of ony 20% of the people and over the years it has emerged as a moderate political party in Egypt, with its current focus on establishing free expression and democratic rights in Egypt.

He was hired from JP Morgan Chase, where he was made the finance chief for the investment bank in 2010. Morzaria is the son of Indian immigrants to Britain who left Uganda during the Idi Amin dictatorship. Colleagues at Chase say he has a broader outlook and is able to look beyond the numbers.

This obituary for FW De Klerk looks back at the dismantling of race based rule of Apartheid in South Africa in 1992, the release of Nelson Mandela, and elections in 1994 through universal franchise. This was done by the son of a schoolteacher in the Transvaal region who rose to the top through the provincial leadership. De Klerk took the actions to bring racial harmony after growing up as an Afrikkaner and working in the local politics of the National Party that introduced Apartheid rule. Before 1989 reforms in the Botha government left black people on 13% of the worst land in the country, tribal homelands in which they did not even live in, in a distorted form of representation. Limited representation was given to Indian ethnic minorities and colored people.  All this changed between 1992 and 1994 after De Klerk assumed leadership of the National Party and the government in 1989. This required great courage and statesmanship, and vision from De Klerk to set the foundations for a multiracial society that even Margaret Thatcher and Reagan failed to grasp and promote. De Klerk died in 2020. For Mandela the path was clear, for De Klerk the path had to be forged out of nothing and against the natural instincts of his own party. This saved south Africa to become a true multi racial society with respect for the rule of law and democracy. ...

Daisuke Wakabayashi's exceptional account of how Steve Jobs directed the project to develop the iPhone starting in 2005 upto to the introduction in 2007. At one point Jobs gives Christie, the engineer leading the very small project team, 2 months to put it together or he would find someone else to do it. This is similiar to the way in which Sony's Morita approached his project team working on the Walkman telling them what he wanted to see and the size of the device. Jobs payed attention to all the details from how the phone names addresses appeared on the screen, dialing from the phone book, the swiping action to start the device, the music, and the colors on the screen. Only in on the project's detail were Bill Campbell, Apple director, and Jony Ive, Apple design chief. Christie was approached by Scott Forestall in late 2004 about this secret project codenamed "Purple." Christie is the engineer who joined Apple in 1996 to work on the Newton, and early touch screen device that failed because the technology was not developed enough at the time, making the device bulky and cumbersome. Christie was working on software for Mac computers in 2004. Greg Joswiak, Apple vice president for iPhone marketing, monitored other phone makers to see if they were coming up with a device that migrated the iPod's music features to the phone. This includes bringing Jared Kushner the president's son-in-law into the chain of command, having him report to Mr. Kelly. The new generation of Communist party leaders that takes over from Hu Jintao and Wen Biao. Chongqing region's party chief, Bo Xilai is one of the leaders expected to be part of the senior communist leadership, along with Li Keqiang as prime minister and Xi Jinping as president. Xi and Bo are sons of communist party veterans from the Long March. Chongqing was the main base of the Communist party in the 1930's and 1940's, as Mao and the communists fought the Nationalists and then the Japanese. Bo has suppressed the influence of Mafia elements in the region, and is campaigning for a place on the Politburo's Standing Committee with a call for a return to Maoist values of "conscientiousness." Chongqing's state companies are supporting a project launched by Bo in 2010 to build 800,0000 subsidized apartments in 3 years, with an investment of $18.5 billion. This comes as income and wealth gaps in the country are widening and housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable for ordinary wage earners....

Some of the hrdles Blu Ray is facing are the price of Blu-Ray disc players priced by Sony at $399 vs. $60 for a standard machine, and BluRay discs priced at $11 more than regular DVD's. Sony has said that the price of the disc players won't fall below $200 till the end of the year by which time consumers in the USA may further tighten their spending. An April report by Sanford Bernstein & Co. predicts sales of BluRay discs will add only 1% to sales of DVD's this year, so the outlook is very uncertain for BluRay. Part of the problem is that its a discretionary spending item and consumers may ask themselves why spend so much on the discs when there is not a signifcant appreciable difference in performance? Blu Ray discs do not provide that much of a noticeable difference except for action films.
