Across Africa the situation is worsening for food security following the pandemic. More people are likely to die from food insecurity than from the pandemic. A succession of crises including drought, a locust swarm moving over vast parts east Africa into South Asia, and tons of crops rotting in the field after the lockdowns, are making the situation worse. With the lockdowns many informal economy workers are not able to earn a living, with no safety net this means they are going without food and slipping deeper into poverty. Remittances from overseas supported many people in the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America, and this has dropped by about 20-30%. As a result the World Food Program estimated in April that 265 million people, double that in 2019 will face world hunger- 3 in every 100 in the world. About 821 million will face food insecurity. The world food system is fragile with just none plant species accounting for two thirds the global crop, with threats of soil erosion, rising temperatures, extreme weather and disease. Wars, high inflation, political struggles, and conflicts make things worse. The hope comes from the fact that this time the largest countries China and India are emerging in 2020 very different from what they faced for most of the nineteenth century, with recurring famines and lack of access to food supplies. India now even allows farmers to export food to buyers in other countries directly. Getting money into the hands of farmers and people in food insecurity areas is one way for them to access existing food supplies all over the world. ...

Russia ships nuclear fuel, the uranium fuel rods for the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran, two weeks after the new US intelligence estimate on Iran, after stalling for some time. The Bushehr plant will be under the inspection supervision and control of the Atomic Energy Agency, and Russia has obtained guarantees that the AEA will be allowed to ensure that the fuel will only be used for the power plant. These are key provisions in the biggest climate change bill in history- Tax credits that last for over a decade for zero carbon plants- these tax credits go to companies that build new sources of emissions free electricity, for wind turbines, solar panels, battery storage, geo thermal plants. Tax credits also for new technologies that capture and bury carbon dioxide from natural gas plants and industrial facilities before it escapes into the atmosphere and heats the planet. This technology is rarely used because of high costs. Incentives for electric vehicles- It extends a tax credit of $7500 for new electric vehicles. It adds a $4000 tax credit for used electric vehicles. Tax credit goes only to people earning $150,000 a year (300,000 for joint filers) for new EV's and $75,000 (150,000 for joint filers) for used EV's. Help for people to lower energy costs - $9 billion in rebates for Americans installing energy efficient electrical appliances. And a decade of tax credits for Americans installing rooftop solar, heat pumps, water heaters and electric HVAC, or electric heating, air conditioning and ventilation technologies. Investments in Domestic Manufacturing- $60 billion for investments in clean energy manufacturing in the US. This includes $30 billion for production tax credits for solar panels, wind turbines, batteries and critical minerals processing. $10 billion in investment tax credits to build manufacturing facilities for electric cars and renewable energy technologies. This action is to halt the shifting of clean energy manufacturing overseas to China. $27 billion towards a green bank that would finance clean energy projects in disadvantaged communities. Cracking down on Methane- the bill places a fine on methane gas emissions from oil and gas wells and pipelines and other infrastructure. Fees of $900 per metric ton in 2024 and $1500 a metric ton in 2026 when it exceeds federally set limits.    ...

Judith Dobrzynski's interview with David Neelman, CEO of Jet Blue, at the airlines offices in Forest Hills, Queens. Neelman talks about the problems facing Jet Blue as it faces losses in 2006. This follows rapid expansion at the low cost carrier. He says Jet Blue did not monitor costs effectively. "Other problems include not pricing connections competitively with other airlines and poor revenue management. Analysts say low cost carriers will have a difficult time with high oil prices. Neelman maintains that it still works for oil at $60 a barrel. Jet Blue is turning its order of 100 Embraer jets, planes with 100 seats and 200 mile range to advantage, by gaining flexibility to serve short haul destinations from New York and Boston to Columbus, Tucson, Nashville, Houston and other places.

Difficulties facing the recovering airline industry as the price of oil continues its increase. Goldman Sach's Group raised its forecast from $68 per barrel in 2007 and 2008 to $80 in 2007 and $90 in 2008. Airlines have already taken a lot of the costcutting steps from flying lighter more fuel efficient planes to smaller steps like reducing the weight of beverage carts and taxiing on the runway with one engine and so on. But their forecasting and business plan estimates of oil costs have been far off the mark and hedging has been inadequate. Lasty year as per the ATA, Airline Transport Association, 42% of the consumption on average was hedged at $60 per barrel, this year 2007 only 31% of fuel consumption on average has been hedged at $62 per barrel. To give some idea of how far off the mark, United's business plan used $50 per barrel through 2010, and Delta used $65 in its business plan for 2007. Expect more fare increases and capacity reductions if this price trend for oil continues. ...

United Airlines has asked Airbus and Boeing to come up with competing bids for 150 new jetliners, an order worth an estimated $10 billion. After the 9/11 bombings, with the slowdown in air travel and the steep losses airlines suffered from high oil prices, its the overseas airlines that made the big orders. The domestic airlines were content to work with an aging fleet. United's move at this time may be calculated to take advantage of the improving credit situation, and the lower prices of steel and other commodities to get better pricing from manufacturers. The thrust of the order is to replace 11 of United's wide body fleet, the Boeing 747,757,767,and 777 model fleet. The average of these planes is 747-13 years, 777- 10 years, 767- 14 years, 757-17 years. See graph. The most crucual conditions United is looking for are financing arranged by the manufacturer that does not use United's cash, and the flexibility to change the order later if market conditions change. United sees this as amove to get good pricing and financing terms now so that when the planes are delvered over time, spread out over several years, the planes would come in just when air travel is picking up with an economic recovery. If it does not get the terms it wants, United may wait. It has already retired half of its oldest planes, the Boeing 737's, with the remaining half due to be replaced by end of 2009. United's competitor American Airlines, announced in fall 2008, that it wants to order upto 100 Boeing jetliners if it can get new agreements with its pilots union. In spring 2009 American speeded up deliveries of 737-800's to replace some of its old MD-80's. Newer aircraft mean better fuel efficiency, and ways to cover routes that are not possible with older aircraft....

Ausra using Australian David Mills technology and research has come up with soar mirrors that focus the intense heat of the suns rays in desert climates onto water that is directly turned into steam that then runs the turbines that generate electricity. With PG&E for distribution and Vinod Khosla's venture capital investment solar energy for about 10 cents per kilowatthour (kwh) is within reach using Ausra's technology and compettitve with cola based energy. Carbon is also going to be about 20% more expensive with higher environmental costs of coal based energy factored into the price as governments restrict its use. The plan is to go from a initial $47 million investment to a $400 million investment for a 100 megawatt plant. This technology could bring a promising future for solar energy and cut dependence on oil and coal, and help bring down oil prices and spur growth with cheaper and clean energy.

China's strategy for climate change action makes allowance for the need for coal as base energy, and insurance to prevent factory shutdowns from shortfalls of hydroelectric energy in drought seasons. It planned 80GW in 2024 for new coal powered plant construction. 

What should the US do? DJT and Republicans including North Dakota Governor Borghum say the US should also make some room for this in transition policy. DJT calls it "drill baby drill." If Morse's thinking holds and crude prices drop to $90 range per barrel (see the link to Morse) then we have another major problem on our hands as the incentives for conservation diminish and there is less money invested in energy conservation, and investment, effort and enthusiasm for new technologies for conservation also diminishes. This risks the environment and carbon dioxide emissions and keeps sending money on expensive oil imports to Saudis, Russia and the middle east which could be better invested in the US for innovation and R&D or returned tothe public. For energy saving conservation technology investors the drop in incentive through a return to cheap oil or expectations of prices that are below $100 for instance can be the worst of both worlds high prices and low investment says Vinod Khosla. He advocates a floor on the price of oil. Stanford Professor Hillard Huntington, executive director of the Energy Modeling Forum, a group of energy experts, says energy saving initiatives could easily take 4 million to 5 million barrels a day of demand off the market in 10 years from the 20 million barrels a day that the USA uses to heat homes, power industry, and fuel cars, trucks and planes. It would be a huge loss for that not to happen. And this has happened before as the oil crisis in the 1980's became a dim memory once oil prices hit a low of $11 in the mid 1980's after conservation kicked in at the time. The idea then is to have some sort of gasoline tax that would keep a floor on the price of oil that Europe already has. And British Columbia has shown how by having a small tax and returning money to the taxpayers with a $100 check refund and in other ways to small business and other txpayers....

Tony Hayward, current CEO of BP, was head of production during the fire and explosion incident at its Texas City, Texas, refinery. BP failed to contain the damage to its reputation during that incident, when it was disclosed that there was neglect of plant maintenance and quality at the refinery by government safety agencies, and by former engineers and directors of Amoco who had operated the plant before BP. The CEO at the time Mr Browne bought Amoco in 1998. To cut costs he did not replace hundreds of engineers who had left, and BP became more dependent on subcontractors. In July 2005 after Hurricane Dennis, Thunder Horse, BP's $1 billon development in the Gulf of Mexico had design and engineering problems and listed 20 degrees. In March 2006, 267,000 gallons of crude oil leaked out of a 34 inch pipe connected to the TranAlaska pipeline, maintained by BP. On August 8, 2006, the U.S. government ordered closure of the entire oil production of Alaska because of what it cited as "severe corrosion," because BP had not done the proper maintenance for the pipeline and its quality systems had failed. By this time Mr Browne's reputation had suffered and he was forced to retire. Tony Hayward is now being criticized for not moving quickly enough in establishing good quality, maintenance and safety systems at BP. The problem of BP not taking responsibility to properly oversee contractors down to the details and make sure all safety steps are taken is evident from the comment by Robert Wine a BP spokesman in London. He said that the responsibility was Transocean's (the company operating the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon), saying something that would not be accepted in the public mind or in oil circles in Houston, that "it's not BP's role to second guess Transocean or to oversee the safety of the rig." Exxon for example imposes detailed requirements on its subcontractors and second guesses its subcontractors on the details. BP did not require Transocean to install acoustic back-ups used in the North Sea to trigger the blow-out preventer in the Gulf drilling area....

By July 2011, when Solar Frontier KK's new solar panel factory is in full scale production, it will become the world's largest plant for photovoltaic cells. The parent company is Showa Shell Sekiyu KK, a Japanese oil refiner. The $1.25 billion solar-panel factory in Miyazaki prefecture is expected to open in a few months. The annual output will be 900 megawatts of photovoltaic cells. For Showa Shell the move makes sense as oil demand is declining in Japan, given a shift to cleaner burning natural gas for power generation, and adoption of hybrid cars. Showa plans to cut its oil refining capacity by 20% in 2011. And the solar business will account for 50% of the company earnings by 2014. Mr Kameda, head of the Showa Shell solar business, says his company is focussing on the market segment that is growing fast- thin-film CIS cells, made from copper, indium and selenium. These cells cost less to make and to buy, than thicker silicon based crystalline cells. The thin-film have a potential for increasing efficiency and reducing cost because they are relatively new. Showa's technology converts about 13% of sunlight into energy. Showa is also working with partners. It plans to supply panels to GE's solar energy projects, and is working with IBM to develop next-generation solar-cell material that is based on readily available materials....

Rising food prices in China have pushed China's consumer price index to a two year high of 5.1% in November, 2010. Rising prices of cooking oil have hit Chinese who live on small incomes the hardest. Food represents about one third of the CPI, but it accounts for 75% of the index's rise. Chinese housing prices have gone up significantly making it hard for new homeowners, now that food and fuel prices are following. The National Developmment and Reform Commission announced a 3.77% rise in retail gasoline prices, to about $3.50 a gallon, an increase of 11% in about one year. Wholesale soyabean oil rose 23% in 2010 to about $1451 a metric ton, with most of the rise since July. China's government response was to impose price controls, asking the largest producers to cap retail prices through March 2011. It also quintupled the fine to 5 million yuan, or $750,000. And the government auctioned off millions of metric tons from its strategic national reserves in Xinjiang and Shandong. But price controls are discouraging production. One mid-size producer in Shanghai, says he has deactivated half his plant, instead off maximixing output ahead of the Lunar year in February. His warehouse is filled with 20,000 boxes of unsold oil, with the production date Nov 23, around the time price controls went into effect and a large grocery distributor halved his order. Edible oil is the third biggest packaged food outlay for ordinary Chinese, after yogurt and milk, and it has a big impact on the lives of the average family....

Electricity rates in France have been lower for years. As France generates 80% of its electricity using nuclear power which is less costly than using natural gas or oil, and as rates are set by the government , the rates rates have been lower. Now the French government has authorized rate increases of 8% to large users and 6% to midsize users in business. Rates will go up to roughly $57 a megawatt hour excluding transmission costs. The estimated cost per megawatt hour at the new nuclear plant in Flamanville, France, is $46.

Southwest hedged against oil price increases and has hedges through 2009 at $51 a crude oil barrel. This has proved to be a smart move as it has provided Southwest with a hedge worth over $2 billion with most of the hedges value being realized over the next 2 years. Airline fuel costs are substantial and evey dollar increase in the price of crude translates intoa $80 million increase in the fuel bill for American Airlines. The hedges for the first 9 months of 2007 cost Southwest about $42 million, so its surprising that other airlines, United, Delta, American, Jet Blue and Northwest did not hedge against rising prices. Maybe they thought that at prices of $52 at the beginning of this year why hedge if prices go down to $40. Or they were too distracted by looking for merger options, or pricing options or other things. What will happen now if oil prices keep climbing? Can airlines raise fares. Yes but revenue per mile is'nt going up significantly as the mix of seats changes with price increases, more of the lower priced seats are sold than the higher priced ones and revenue per seat has not improved. For example even in an environment where 6 industry fare increases ocurred in the 3rd quarter Southwest average ticket price for that period was $105.37 only 62 cents higher than the previous year. Southwest now hopes to gain in this cycle as the other airlines may scrap some routes or ground some planes and Southwest can expand in those areas. ...

Risk taking CEO's steps at Shell appear to be paying off as Shell's share price does better than BP's. Better results in hiring, technology, management streamlining, in sourcing non-conventional output, and Libyan deal coming after restructuring of its Russian exploration project, all show improved prospects at Shell after new CEO took over. Jeroen Van der Veer, who assumed the CEO position in 2004, is interviewed by Chip Cummins and Guy Kazan at it London headquarters. Van der Veer took over after the scandal involving Shell's overstating of its oil and as reserves. His early steps were to centralize decisionmaking, do away with the dual board structure based in the Hague and London, and increase hiring of technology professionals. 4500 midcareer professionals were hired in 2006, a new Chief Technology officer was appointed, and seven "chief scientists," creating a new focus on technology development and research, and making technology leadership a critical part of its strategy. Van der Veer also bet heavily on new projects, including a $20 billion oil and LNG project on the island of Sakhalin in Russian Far East, and a $18 billion gas field plus natural gas to diesel plant in Quatar. Jeroen Van der Veer is described by colleagues as a thoughtful but firm and straight talking, low profile guy who joined Shell in 1971, at age 24. He ran a large Dutch refinery, tackling labor problems and implementing an expansion. He has a passion for long distance skating, having twice finished a 200 kilometer race through 11 cities in the Netherlands....

Consumer buying habits at Walmart in the last 6 months since the sharp downturn in the economy hit in October 2008. Executives in merchandising at Walmart, Target and other stores discuss trends with the WSJ. There is adisciplined shopper with less browsing on the aisles. FOod is up on the list. Private label groceries at lower cost are selling well. At Walmart sales are up for refrigerated pizza,lower grades of meat. Ground beef and chicken sell way better than steak and beef. And carbohydrates are doing better than protein foods, so that pasta is doing well. Staying at home and entertaining at home is the trend says Fleming of Walmart, from the take and bake pizza at $5 to the movie and popcorn. Which is why the luggage section and trvel is slow, and flat screen tv's are selling well. Vitamins, herbs and plants for vegetable gardens are up as customers try to plant their own vegetable gardens. Car maintenance and repair is big, sales of motor oil, filters and tires. are some of Walmarts big sellers. Whatever makes the car last longer is considered attractive by customers. And home repair items are selling well at Home Depot....

Under Goodluck Jonathan Nigeria's foreign reserves declined from $50 billion to $33 billion, and there is $1 billion in the sovereign wealth fund. About $20 billion in pilfering of state funds was reported by the Central Bank of Nigeria, but no action was taken by Jonathan. Indians may pride themselves on a better performance, yet prime minister Singh of India, seen as "Mr. Clean," allowed auctioning of telecom licenses in the second term, that had to be cancelled because of corruption. Throughout emerging markets not just in oil producing countries, poverty remains entrenched, because funds that should go into infrastructure and services are misused, which creates a disincentive for foreign investment, further adding to the problems in these countries. India and Nigeria are the two fastest growing countries in the planet, and the unspoken fear is that the demographic dividend with so many young people will be wasted by corrupt and inefficient management of the economy and resources of the two countries. The time lost in the last years of the Singh administration and the four years of the Jonathan administration will never be regained, the hopes of millions of young people are dashed again and again, and the goodwill of Europe and the U.S. eager to participate with the latest technologies in the development of the two countries, as they have done in China, is wasted....

The 1 hour 20 minute flight London to Amsterdam uses a Virgin 747-400. Virgin teams up with Boeing and GE Aviation for this project. The plane will use 20% biofuels and a drop-in solution, meaning the GE engine needs no modification and the engine performance is not affected. Virgin gets marketing cache from this move. Why aren't other airlines doint this? Another thing Virgin will not use biofuels that are derived from crops like palm oil or others that consume vast amounts of land and water.

A locally produced ton of hot rolled coil steel in India, an industry benchmark, is up 42% in price to $675, since January 2008, when Tata unveiled the Nano. Raw materials account for a higher portion of the costs of making a car like the Nano, and account for 23% of the costs of making the Nano, according to consultants Global Insight. This means margins will be harder to preserve on the Nano. As Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata group of companies put it at a shareholder meeting July 24, "if we passed on all costs to the consumer, it will affect demand, and if we don't it will affect margins". Tata is accomodating suppliers like Rico Industries that make the engine blocks that use steel for increased costs of raw materials. Other costs also are going up. For new car loans the interest rates are between 14 and 16% and fuel prices are going up making the cost of operating the 50mpg Nano costlier for those riding motorcycles. Tata faces other higher costs, its managng director Ravi Kant says the project for the Nano plant in Singur is costing more. The $470 million invested so far is 18% more than it had projected in January and double the amount stated when the prject was started in 2006....

Years of failure of politicians in Congress in Brazil, and poor decisions in running the government by the Worker's Party by overspending leaving little money for services, sanitation, health and other priorities, leads to Brazil turning to a former army officer in the 2018 elections. Corruption charges with collusion of politicians and the state owned oil company on contracts known as the Car Wash scandal further damaged the reputation of politicians in the Worker's Party. Jair Bolsonaro was elected to Brazil's Congress in 1990 after a short period in the military at a time when democratic institutions were being restored in Brazil following decades of military dictatorship. By 2014 after two terms in office the Worker's Party led by a former automobile plant worker Da Silva had lost popular support with overspending, failure to upgrade public services and neglect of basic infrastructure such as sanitation, leading to widespread protests. In the 2014 congressional elections Bolsonaro won by nearly 500,000 votes, leading to his bid to run for president from a small party which had the support of Brazil's military. The military played a role in supporting the Getulio Vargas administration from 1930-1945, which pushed industrialization in Brazil and set minimum wage, workers rights. Democracy was restored by 1945 after Brazil sided with the U.S. in the war. In 1964 the administration of Joao Goulart was overthrown in a military coup after popular discontent and protests. Democracy was restored in 1985 with centrist parties playing apart till the election of the Worker's Party under Ignacio Lula in 2008. Six years into his administration by 2014 issues of overspending and poor management of public services led to loss of popular support for the Workers Party as the public looked for alternatives to combat crime, improve public services and address problems of lack of spending on sanitation, public services, health care. The collapse of the commodities pricing boom led to higher unemployment and a shrinking economy leading to unrest and public protests.  ...

For passengers air travel nowadays is travelling on planes that are often totally booked. This is because airlines are cutting flights. And with fewer passengers after the economic crisis hit, airlines are having a difficult time cutting flights enough to meet the continuing drop in the number of passengers. Before the crisis business and international travel was a good source of revenue, now this is fading as there is more competition on transatlantic routes with about 50 airlines offering flights between US cities and European cities. The liberalization of air travel between the two continents with the 2007 "open skies" agreement is keeping downward pressure on prices. The International Air Transport Association says the number of passengers travelling on business and first class tickets between N. America and Europe was down 18.4% in April 2009, compared with same month in 2008. Traffic between N. America and Asia was down 26%, for the same period. This is hitting Lufthansa ansd KLM-Air France hard, but is helping Easyjet, Ryanair, and Air Berlin. As demand drops airlines will continue to cut capacity, and this will be done by cutting the number of flights on a route and using smaller planes. After all this capacity cutting takes place by September, OAG Aviation estimates that the seats on domestic flights will drop to 66.5 million from a peak of 84 million in 2001, a drop of 21%. Some airlines which rely less on corporate travellers will not see as steep a drop. These airlines are Southwest, JetBlue and AirTran. Airlines that may not survive the effects of the economic crisis, with tight credit and drop in air travel, and volatile oil prices, are United Airlines and US Airways. United relied heavily on corporate and trans-Pacific fliers before the economic crisis. Fitrch Ratings cites this in reducing the credit rating for United to junk status, as well as the heavy debt maturities in 2009 and 2010. In June 2009 United raised $175 million by issuing new debt, but at an interest rate of 17%. At US Airways the combined airline with America West after a$1.5 billion merger is struggling. It has the thinnest cash position of any airline according to a Morningstar research analyst, and may need further borrowing to meet debt payments. With all assets already mortgaged US Airways may have little borrowing capability left....
