In the days when cross border technology flows were limited and the investment in India was small, India's technological capabilities at an early stage H1-B visa program acted as an exchange program where Indian engineers could gain experience and skills, learn new technologies in the US, that would benefit both India and the US taking a long term view. In 2025 when cross border technology flows to India from the US are large and significant, when Indian investment is large India's economy fastest growing and from a much larger base, with ability to absorb talented engineers in expanding Indian business, the H1-B program is one that drains both the US and India. India as a huge brain drain of 60,000 of its best engineers every year to 2030 or 300,000 of its best engineers and the 3 million engineers they would have trained locally through their creative talents. For the US it means the loss of 300,000 engineering jobs to 2030 for locals in 51 states in the Nation. Both make no sense. Business practices once set do not change. This is why an executive order by DJT was signed by the president to impose a $100,000 fee that Tata, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Apple can choose to pay every year for 6 years if they want to hire someone on H1-B Visas. To call this group of Indian H1-B of 60,000 engineers "dreamers" also makes no sense because 3.3 million engineers knowledge base and skills to India's growth capabilities and modernization could increase economic growth, modernization of Indian infrastructure, to make India a Dream State to live in. And the same number of American born engineers would make each of the America's 51 states Dream States through repowering America's new modernization of infrastructure and power economic growth. ...

Apple will approve borrowers and fund loans on its own without relying on banks as it offers buyers the option of paying in 4 payments in Apple Pay. An Apple subsidiary has obtained lending licenses in most states. Apple is able to do this easily because of the data it has collected to prevent fraud and because the amounts are small mostly under $1000. Payments will be deducted automatically from bank accounts using debit cars. Buyers are asked to link their debit cards to the account. Many buyers prefer to not pay interest charges, knowing this Apple prefers to do away with late charges and fees altogether in its way of doing business with its customers.

Grethcen Morgenson says investor Paulson who handpicked the bad apples from mortgage securities that were placed in the basket called Abacus 2007-AC1, and sold by Goldman to institutional investors, knew exactly what he was doing. Paulson paid Goldman $15 million for creating and marketing the Abacus deal according to the complaint by the SEC. Gretchen does not fail to disclose the ultimate irony of these happenings in her own subtle manner. Paulson, a graduate of the Stern School of Business, and of Harvard Business School, makes a living out of shorting high-flying shares in the tech bubble, and now in the mortgage securities bubble. This time in 2007 he makes an estimated $3.7 billion in 2007 and $2 billon in 2008 for his hedge fund with investors from pension funds, endowments, wealthy families and individuals. The irony- a Congressional committee invites him to testify in November 2008 about the credit crisis, they ask him for advice in solving the credit crisis. The other irony- Paulson gives $15 million to the Center for Responsible Lending, for a center that would provide foreclosure assistance to borrowers under water....

After taking a $4.5 billion charge on chips designed for China after US government stopped sales to China of sensitive technologies Nvidia is doing very well. Peers says the Motorola Mobility acquisition raises doubts about the Google advertising focussed strategy. One option for Google, which lacks manufacturing experience, is to keep the patents and sell off the manufacturing business at an early date. Samsung forecast of profits in the 1st quarter of 2014 shows a decline of 24% to $7.1 billion. Peers says Amazon's strategy is flawed and the new Kindle Fire tablet will cut into Amazon's already low margins. He points to the analysis of components going into tablets by IHS iSuppli, which found materials costs alone come up to over $262. For companies making hardware such as Samsung and Sony the tablets have to be priced higher. By pricing the Kindle Fire at $199, Amazon CEO Bezos, may be counting on the tablet boosting Amazon's retail business, the digital music, and the streaming of videos, and bookstores. Surveys show the tablet being used mainly for web surfing or email, and less for watching video or reading books. Amazon has the Kindle e-reader which is a better option for readers because of the price. And video sources include other suppliers including YouTube and Netflix. Apple still has the edge in resources- $76 billion in cash and investments in mid 2011- to support lower prices on newer versions of the iPad with more capabilities and design features. Apple with its supply chain experience may be able to obtain better costs from component suppliers than Amazon for future price reductions. Sony and Samsung also bring the manufacturing knowhow and expertise to do this, with Sony's added capabilities in designing devices. Chinese experts in Hong Kong say the US and Europe deindustrialized their economies with pursuing of policies called "neo-liberal" but basically Reagan era policies that Democratic presidents Clinton-Obama imitated. As they deindustrialized it created disaffection among the struggling lower and middle income classes making $35,000-$106,000 that were big losers in the process, creating threats to democracy as financial and tech, plus pharmaceutical sectors took control of the economy. China's success comes from three decades of mastering the ways of practicing industrial policy that it can support private companies with low cost land, additional subsidies that reduce the cost of production and provide a buffer to absorb losses so that it could dominate key industries. Policies where textbooks and economists trained in the US failed utterly and completely leading to dangers to US democracy that we see as opportunities for good paying jobs in manufacturing disappeared for middle and lower income households from 1980 to 2020. These economists trained in the US always said see lower cost Chinese made goods means lower and middle income people pay less, never saying that this means all opportunities for better paying jobs in manufacturing will be lost for these classes in society. The tech and financial sectors had close ties to the new arrangement that turned manufacturing over to China from the Reagan era to the Obama and Trump era. Apple and Tesla and many industries benefitted from manufacturing mostly outsourced to China. ...

The escalating tension and freeze in relations between the US and China is a watershed moment says the WSJ. Looking back years from now it may be the year following the pandemic and the war in Ukraine that tensions took on a level that would lead to acceleration of the building of new supply chains for the US and European Union in Asia that separate from China. The Trump years as president escalated trade tensions and tensions over origins of Covid. The war in Ukraine and China's siding with Russia and forming a "no limits" partnership with Russia have created serious rethinking of the entire relationship from supply chains to defense. US president Biden sees Ukraine's defense as a way of showing that an attack on one country by a neighbor in violation of international law is not acceptable to the US, and particularly in the context of China's relations with Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific countries. In this situation the US is taking the initiative in the war in Ukraine with Gen. Cavoli at US Headquarters in Europe assisting in the effort to repel Russian aggression, and also send a message to China on the importance the US sees in not allowing this kind of violation of international law. ...

Consumer Reports is published by nonprofit advocacy group with 640 employees. It is based in Yonkers, New York, and was founded in 1936. It takes no advertising and answers only to buyers of the magazine and to consumers. Its labs based in Yonkers test a whole range of products and Consumer Reports does not hesitate to put a "Don't Buy" rating on products. In June it pointed out the defect in the Apple iphone that made it lose reception when the left corner was touched by a user. It tested the Lexus 460 a few months ago, and when it found that it was a rollover risk, Consumer Reports gave it a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" rating. The magazine has come up with new contraptions that test different products. In the 50's it created a smoking machine that accumulated what was left of a smoker's inhalations in a container device. And it was credited by the Surgeon General's Report in 1964 warning of the dangers of smoking, as having done some of the serious research on the subject of smoking dangers. The magazine suffered a loss in 2001 of $9.4 million, but has since recovered under the leadership of Guest, who had earlier served as chairman. Guest moved the testing to more expensive products like Lexus cars and made another important decision. He expanded testing so that when it came to laptops, cell phones and flat screen TV's (which were becoming rapidly popular in the market), the testing would be ongoing. Guest moved announcements and postings of new product results to the internet and online subscriptions have tripled in the last 7 years. As a result the company has been profitable since 2003. Other decisions have been to add user opinions and comments, buying Consumerist.com which puts up reader opinions, and to attract younger readers. And though initially feared by scientists at Consumer Reports, who preferred to avoid user opinions and stick with the scientific facts, the moves have not affected its credibility. About 7 million subscribers subscribe to Consumer Reports, and about half of these subscribers pay $26 a year for access to its website, ConsumerReports.org. This makes it one of the handful of information publications that have paid digital subscribers, including the Wall Street Journal Online, which has only a fraction of the subscribers of Consumer Reports....

Microsoft CEO completed 36 major acquisitions since taking over from Steve Ballmer in 2014. In this report Jay Greene of WSJ points out a significant change under Nadella. Under Gates and Ballmer the heads of companies acquired were not brought into company executives discussions. Nadella invited these heads to join the rest of the company's top managers to meetings to hear different views. Nadella says Microsoft would not have missed big trends had it listened more. Under Ballmer acquisitions such as Nokia were not properly handled. Even under Gates in the earlier period products in Search later developed by Google did not get the attention they deserved and heads of companies acquired did not get  to actively participate. The Not Invented Here Syndrome applied to Microsoft managers. The aggressive attitudes did not produce the best results. Like Apple's Cook who has a collaborative style, Nadella has set out to open up the company to different ideas and people. Nadella has shifted the company away from earlier products to cloud computing and mobile computing to produce better results. Under Nadella open source software programming receives the openness and respect it deserves, after the Ballmer years. The change in attitude is real and Nadella as a Microsoft veteran for 24 years has been able to steer the company in a new direction. ...

The DJT Executive Order removing birthright citizenship on Jan 20, 2024 applies to future undocumented immigrants, and is based on the part of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution passed in 1866 by the US Congress and ratified by states in 1868.  The 14th Amendment came after the US Civil War and was aimed at giving emancipated black slaves citizenship. The US Supreme Court gave US citizenship to one Chinese immigrant in US vs Wong in 1898 following the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. This did not set a precedent as at that time immigration from Asia was extremely restricted and the case was not intended to apply to millions crossing borders as this did not exist. For most of the period 1900-1960 Asian immigration was negligible because of the laws in existence until the Kennedy administration. Immigration from Mexico was mainly for US agricultural farms. When this led to a surge in illegal crossing of the US Mexican border in 1944-1954 a similar situation to today existed when Eisenhower conducted Operation Wetback in 1954 to deport about 1 million undocumented immigrants. ...

If only there was some way to get this farm produce to homes. For the government to buy the farm produce and Kroger, Walmart, or some other volunteer agency to distribute it to homes and food banks. Much of it is now being destroyed, even as people stocking up canned foods in their pantry are not able to eat healthy for months, as fresh fruits and vegetables are  needed now more than ever with so much time spent inside. The ample time to cook and learn, to try new recipes, also makes this waste of fresh fruit and vegetables a poor national response in this crisis. A supplement to the government farm aid program should be set up and money set aside for the purpose of getting this produce out of farmers hands and into homes at little cost to families, in the effort to keep them healthy with so much time spent inside.

Marchionne relying on "my kids", getting good people throughout the Fiat global operations and outside of a younger generation, who were open to doing things in a new way. He had the courage to unassumingly go about the business of remaking Fiat, by removing middle and upper managers who produced a kind of paralysis or sclerosis in Fiat, making change impossible after years of a failed culture embedding itself. It would be fair to say that he tore up the old plans, tore up the old organization charts, tore up the car plans and designs in the pipeline, tore up the failed models and put in place new ones- the Bravo for the Stilo, and tore up the old management, put in new people and tasks and wedded them in an informal way, with their own culture developing along the way. The were teams and their tasks, all wedded together in an informal arrangement, in close proximity, with informal communication. Marchionne saw his role as helping people reach decisions, setting stretch goals, and encouraging levels below him to take responsibility and make courageous decisions. He saw the Cinquicento as his version of the Apple iPod, and benchmarked Fiat against Apple, so he was looking outside the auto industry for people to emulate and for new ideas. He himself was from outside the auto industry. ...

Netbooks sales were half amillion in first quarter 2008, jumped to 4.4 million in 3rd quarter 2008, and are expected to double to 8.8 million in sales per quarter in 2009. Acer was the first to take advantage of this trend. It has moved to 3rd place in PC's after HP and Dell, and Apple is now in 4th place. A lot of new trends are changing the IT marketplace. These netbooks sell for $100 and may be the next big thing for developing countries, where a low cost computer would appeal to the millions of people in urban and rural areas.

Theresa May, prime minister of Britain, faced a difficult situation by Jan. 2017- the European Union was not going to budge on the free movement of people and services within the EU. With no prospects for negotiations on the migration issue and a decision to retake control of migration, May announced on Jan. 17, 2017, that she would pull Britain out of the single market. By Jan 2017 Theresa May was perceived in the media facing tough challenges and having no clear path, and no clear plan, and little support from the civil service, business, and within a divided Conservative party, to implement Brexit. This has not changed much even with this decision, as the additional hurdle of getting Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and the close to 50% of the people who voted against Brexit to support this move remains as large as ever, the situation of ample uncertainty, for May and for Britain.

Is Toyota in decline? In the first quarter of 2009 Toyota suffered ahuge loss comparable to GM's. Toyota's CEO, Mr Toyoda, thinks it is in decline. And having read Jim Collins book "How the Mighty Fall", Toyoda thinks Toyota is already at the fourth stage of decline in the five stages Collins has outlined. Collins looks at the traumatic steps before IBM, HP reemerged from crisis and How Motorola failed to emerge. Same is true for Apple. Success at something is now guarantee of continuation, infact at the point of everything going well things are already in place to cause the rapid decline.
