U.S. president Trump set up a separate task force called the Great American Revival Industry Groups. He read each of the names out loud during his press conference on Monday, a list of about 200 industry leaders from all the main industry groups, many of whom he personally knows. The first meeting of this group met in a hour long call with about 35 participants.  Most of the leaders praised the strong action taken by the president. On the task of reopening the economy the participants told president Trump that current testing levels were inadequate for effectively reopening the economy.  This is the first of four calls the president plans to make and included leaders from banking, retail, hospitality,  and food industries. The tasks facing the task force are to provide advice on how to reopen the economy and how to respond to the economic damage.  The U.S. president decided to set up this task force after talking to his friends in the business world so that he could get the broadest possible range of advice and thinking. Dr. Fauci, the leading helth expert on the president's team along with Dr. Birx, said on April 14 that reopening would require testing and virus tracking that was efficient and reliable and that the U.S. was not there yet. U.S. has conducted about 3 million tests. Health experts say there should be millions of tests per day before people can return to work. ...

Bedrock is one of the financial firms that is forgiving rent for small bookshops, retailers, restaurants, gyms and other stores in Detroit, Michigan. Bedrock owns 50% of the leasable commercial real estate space in Detroit's 1.4 square mile downtown business district. In all it covers about 40% of downtown Detroit and retail. A similar program is underway in Seattle with help from Amazon. This story shows how Mr. Cullen who is Bedrock's CEO is doing this. He reports to Mr. Gilbert, a billionaire, who is also owner of Quicken Loans lender, Cleveland Cavaliers sports team. Mr. Gilbert is recovering from a severe stroke he had this year. This makes the job harder for Cullen as he has to seek approval from Mr. Gilbert and show this is something that will also benefit Mr. Gilbert. This will make recovery in Detroit easier. He says Detroit suffered badly in the 2008 economic crisis, and he does not want to see this happen again. Fortunately Mr. Gilbert, who is in therapy, has approved the action of Mr. Cullen. Cullen has to show that out of work local people in Detroit and empty storefronts hurts Mr. Gilbert as well as Detroit. So both come out winners from forgiveness for rent for a couple of months.   ...

Individual investors reacted strongly to declining prospects for emerging markets with slowing growth, depreciating currencies, corruption and political uncertainty in 2013. As of the beginning of June, retail investors pulled $18.1 billion from emerging market bond funds, about one third of the amount that went in to emerging markets since the financial crisis in 2007, according to fund tracker EPFR Global. Institutional investors have pulled out less, about $9.3 billion, or 10% of their investments in emerging markets bonds since 2007. A similiar pattern is seen for investment in the stock markets of emerging market countries. The U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary expansion helped pull more money into emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, Brazil and Turkey. As the Fed shifts away from these policies in 2013 emerging market countries have large current account deficits and less money to finance imports and debt.

The Labor Department reports jobs increased by a seasonally adjusted 203,000 in November 2013, and the unemployment rate dropped to 7% from 7.3%. In the past a decrease in the unemployment rate was partly a result of people leaving the labor force. Job gains have come from lower wage jobs in retail and restaurants, which raises new doubts about the quality of job gains. About one third of the job gains in November were in lower paid jobs- retailers added 22,000 jobs, restaurants and hotels 17,000, Temp help services 16,000. In November 2013 27,000 jobs were added in manufacturing. Overall 11 million American are unemployed and about 4 million are unemployed for more than 6 months.

The Nissan NV 200 designed from scratch as the next taxicab for the 13,000 cabs in New York City. Nissan won the Taxi for Tomorrow contest, and a 1 year contract worth $1 billion. New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission will require all medallion owners to buy the Nissan NV 200 as they replace the old cabs. It costs $29,000 and will be phased in over a 3-5 year period. The Nissan NV 200 was designed from scratch for New York City. It has a French designer working out of a studio in California. The design team went through each detail in great detail. The designer Mr. Farion took a month hailing cabs throughout the day just to get a feel for what the cabs today are like and what needs to be improved. This includes horn sound to the inside of the vehicle and the wear and tear that the cabs are subject to on New York roads. New York roads are rough because of potholes and other problems.

How trends are changing in retail to adapt to new economic conditions in April 2008. Luxury chains are seeing significantly more growth in sales in their factory outlets than at full priced stores. Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley say that there were signs of the problems even a year earlier, HSBC a British bank set aside $1.76 billion to cover potential losses, and a former Federal Reserve Governor published a book in June on subprime mortages going bust. So for ratings agencies to wait till July 2007, to reduce their ratings makes them look ridiculous. Lehman's Malvey, global fixed income strategist quoted here sees a recession in 2008 into 2009, as the impact spreads to retail stores and to car buyers. One reason for this is that jumbo loans on homes are going to cost much more than before, slowing the housing market even more, and the number of housing loans going bad will rise in coming months.

Under the 50+1 rule, a German Football League regulation, club members retain majority voting rights in an outsourced company that runs its football team. This gives it a genuine local presence and is why German clubs have opposed the Super League of just a few star teams playing each other. This DW.com report shows messages on Twitter by Eintracht Frankfurt saying that the whole Super League idea "is completely absurd." And that "every decent club must distance itself from it." So much for political campaigning and talk of inflation, inflation comes in lower in September after DJT tariffs of 10-15% on EU, Japan and other trading partners. The higher tariffs on China are action needed to reduce trillion dollar trade deficits the world has with China, deficits that are economically destabilizing for the world economy, with supply chain concentration a serious problem. US inflation in September came in at 3.0 percent lower than expected.  One reason is that the headline numbers are high but in actual practice the tariffs are on average at 12.5% not 17% or 25% as headlines show. The tariffs vary by country and the US was careful to keep them at 10% for the EU and Britain and 15% for Japan, the key trading partners. China is an exception at 47% because it is US policy to reduce the world's 1 trillion trade deficit with China and cutting this is a major goal. For decades the US tried every possible way to bring it down to no avail till this effort with tariffs. Another is exceptions in products- for India this includes semiconductors, smartphones and pharmaceuticals. Another factor is that postpandemic inflation in 2021-2022 created higher profit margins in auto, retail and other sectors of the economy. As a result only 30-40% of the tariff gets passed onn to consumers. In autos only about 20% because buyers cannot afford the high prices. Some tariffs are still being negotiated and are a foreign policy tool to get India to stop funding Russia in the Ukraine war knowing that India was importing most of its oil from non-Russian sources till 2019. China is also funding Russia, that is true but the US can insist on exercising its leverage with Asian partners not China. With China the tariff on fentanyl and the overall 47% tariff- down from 57% after meetings in Busan, South Korea between Xi and DJT last month- shows the US takes the Chinese role in distorting world trade to its benefit seriously.  ...

Economists estimate Brazil's economy declined in the 4th quarter 2013 following a 0.5% contraction in 3rd quarter 2013. The central bank's economic activity index dropped by 1.35% in December over November. After a decade long boom in consumer spending retail sales are slowing sharply, growing only 4% in 2013 compared to 2012. The bright spot is unemployment. Unemployment in 6 of Brazil's largest metropolitan areas declined to an average of 5.4% in 2013 from 5.5% in 2012, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Brazilian manufacturers see lower production and investment, and industry is affected by the weak economic conditions in Argentina. Real wages increased by 1.8% in 2013 over 2012. Growth for 2014 is estimated at 1.5%.

After increasing the price of subsidized diesel, the Indian government lays out a plan to cut the deficit over five years. The plan sets a goal for the deficit of 5.3% for fiscal year ending March 2013 to come down to 3% by 2017. Earlier India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), had said the government needed to take action on the deficit before it reduced interest rates. The RBI faces a difficult task in reducing rates to stimulate the slowing economy because inflation was 7.8% in Sept. 2012. At the same time the sharp decline in growth is a cause for serious concern- the most recent RBI forecast for GDP growth made in July for the current fiscal year through March 2013 is 6.5%. This may not be achieved as other economists have lowered the estimate to as low as 5% because of slow government action in economic reforms, high interest rates, and the uncertain global economc outlook. The last action by the RBI to lower interest rates was a drop of half a percentage point in April 2012. Much of the momentum for the Indian economy was lost in the first half of 2012 with the governments vacillating steps for opening the retail and other sectors to foreign investment. Only in October 2012 has prime minister Manmohan Singh set a clear direction by dropping coalition partners opposed to reforms and announcing new policies for foreign investment....

The Republican tax bill that passed the House and Senate in Dec. 2017 is likely to increase the deficit in the range of about $516 billion according to Tax Foundation or $ 1trillion according to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, after boost to growth is included. This time in an effort to get a win Republicans cast aside doubts about the effects on the deficit to get it passed. During the Obama years tax legislation failed to get Republican support because of impact on deficits. The reluctance of president Obama to touch the deductions as proposed by the Simpson-Bowles Commission showed the politically cautious approach taken by Obama.  The new bill was examined by the NYT for its impact on various income groups. For people making over $50,000 over 80% get a cut in taxes, about 10% see no difference and the rest see increase in taxes. This goes up by a few percentage points to 84-85% in cuts for people making over 200,000 to $ 1 million, and drops to 80% for over $1 million incomes. About 20% see an increase in taxes for incomes over $1 million.  As evidence of how the tax bill impacts in greater detail this is not provided by the NYT, and shows that the impact of the bill is still not fully understood.     ...

No question about it there is herd behaviour, as one of the research analysts points out. Almost $10 billion raised in a Bank of China IPO. For retail investors this is oversubscribed by as much as 80 times and oversubscribed for instituional investors by 20 times. And China's banks lack transparency about the amount of bad loans on their books. Estimates of Ernst and Young and OECD suggest huge amount of bad loans still on the books. IMF analysis by Richard Podpiera as cited in the NYT suggest that the lending to favored parties continues unabated. The Russians are catching on about doing IPO's for their oil companies.The OECD estimate cited by the NYT is for another $203 billion needed to be injected in the banking system by China.

This editorial from the Times after the New Hampshire Republican primary- in which rival candidates attacked Bain Capital- says that leveraged buyouts by private equity firms like Bain Capital were only one of the causes of the growing income inequality, and by no means the principal cause. And they had little to do with the subprime mortgage crisis that led to the financial crisis and recession in 2008, which aggravated the income inequality. A serious factor was the lowering of wages in manufacturing in competition with lower wage countries in a globalized economy and the decline of good manufacturing jobs over three decades. The increase in low wage jobs in the retail and service sector with the decline in manufacturing did little to arrest the growing gap in wages.

He draws attention to the fact that nobody will make it if America doesn't, and that for the next year or two things will be tough.
