For the government to recover its nearly $50 billion investment GM stock would have to rise above $68 billion. At its peak the stock was valued at $56 billion in 2000. With severe global competition expected as there is capacity for manufacturing 100 million cars and a market for only about 55 million according to experts, there will be pressure on prices and margins. GM will emerge as asmaller company after bankruptcy and more automakers will be going after ashrinking market. Any assessment of how well the government does will also have to take into account the benefits to the American economy of stabilizing the auto industry in a period of freefall.

Adolf Merckle, a native of Dresden, left for West Germany after World War II and built up businesses RatioPharm a generics pharmaceutical maker, and Heidelberg Cement. After making a bad bet in shortselling of VW shares, just when the Prosche family moves ran up the price of VW shares from 210 euros to 1000 euros in 2 trading sessions to obtain majority control of VW, Merckle faced losses of several hundred million euros and possible loss of RatioPharm. A badly timed acquisition by Heidelberg Cement also created worsening finances for Merckle's business. When he failed to get a bridge loan Merckle committed suicide. A public outcry prevented the state government there to provide any loans to Merckle.

This was after the near demise of Merrill from taking excessive risks. Sources also say Thain asked for a $30 million to $40 million bonus which was not approved. A few days before the Merrill deal was finally concluded on January 1, under stressful circumstances because of Merrill's huge impending losses, Thain issued bonuses of millions of dollars to Merrill executives. She says it could haul plenty of hay for her horse Kismet, had fuel economy that was acceptable and was easy to back up. hOw the conventional thinking about the availability of oil to supply ever increasing demand is changing. At some point oil availability will not satisfy increasing demand in the very near term. Current production is 85 million barrels a day, some experts see the supply ceiling at 100 million barrels a day and that ceiling could be reached as demand increases by 2012. The reasoning is based not on what is under the ground but on what is likely to happen considering all the factors, political factors with countries preferring to leave oil in the ground, shortages of engineers and high prices of drilling rigs and equipments creating constraints, and the inflation in exploration costs leading to underinvestment.

Kerkorian will lose $640 million of his $980 million investment in Ford made in April of this year at $7 a share. He sold a portion of his shares at $2.43 a share and is expected to sell the remainder soon. MGM Mirage stock that he owns have fallen by 85% since hitting $100 a share last October. The value of his 54% stake in MGMMirage has sunk from $13 billion to just over $2 billion. Its not clear that sale of Ford shares were prompted bya margin call. The Putin Medvedev administration is reluctant to lowere the value of the ruble seeing the stable ruble as sign of the hard won recovery of the last decade. The Russian stock market has lost 68% of its value so far in 2008 and the banking sector is affected. Russia has committed about $200 billion in the bailout plan and the central bank has raised intrest ates for the fifth time most by 1 percentage point to reduce capital outflows from the country. For weeks Russia has used its foreign currency reserves to keep the ruble from falling further. In the process it has used up $112 billion in reserves since the summer. It still has $485 billion in reserves.

Three new cable stay bridges are coming up in New York, the first between Queens and Brooklyn replaces the old Kosciuszko bridge and is already constructed, the second replaces the Tappan Zee across the Hudson river just 10 miles north of the Bronx, the third  replaces the Goethals between Staten Island and Elizabeth, New Jersey. The cable-stay design is becoming popular because of its aesthetic looks and because its easier and economical to construct. This gives a face lift to the city. Much of the work is done under the leadership of the State Department of Transportation, New York State Thruway Authority, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Brooklyn Bridge built in 1883 has this kind of cable design but from an earlier era.

According to Foresight Analytics in just 4 months the delinquencies rate for condominium builders accelerated from 5.9% in thrid quarter to 10% in fourth quarter 2007 for about $42 billion in condominium debt. The National Association of Realtors estimates that an oversupply that would meet 10 months of demand is where the condominium building ended up in 2007.

A fascinating look in DW.com at pictures of an iceberg 158 kilometres long and 48 kilometres wide, on its way to hit the British territory of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. The island of South Georgia is known for large populations of penguins and seals, albatrosses, and humpback as well as blue whales. Prior to its splitting up the iceberg was even larger about the size of Luxembourg. The iceberg is a few hundred metres thick. The iceberg has already travelled for 1600 kilometres, and will reach South Georgia in 10-20 days.

Antarctica is the most southern region in the world, with 99% covered with ice some 5000 metres thick, 1.3 times size of Europe. Lowest temperature at -99 degrees centigrade, windspeeds can reach 155 mph. On it there are 4000 scientists in summer on research stations of 30 countries.

Cloud computing is a growing $300 billion business, with Amazon a key player having 28% of the market. It competes with Google and Microsoft in cloud computing. Andy Jassy has built the cloud computing business with $51 billion in sales. It generates 10% of sales in the final quarter of 2020 for Amazon but over half the profit. Renting out server space and software to customers is a profitable business compared to online retail. Sales of $12.7 billion in the final quarter of 2020 generated $3.6 billion in profit. And growth a brisk 28% over the prior year quarter.

Satya Nadella ran the cloud computing business at Microsoft before becoming CEO. IBM named a new CEO from this business that revived growth. Now Andy Jassy is promoted to CEO at Amazon in the sequence of new CEO's from cloud computing.

Defense minister Rajnath Singh says on the last day of Aero India, that India has "great potential to emerge as a global and regional Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub, given the cost competitiveness of its manpower resources, the availability of abundant specialist capabilities and geographical advantages."

Between 2016 nd 2019, 138 proposals worth over $37 billion for domestic manufacturing of defense equipment components were approved. Aero components sector is expected to double from 30,000 crore today to 60,000 crore by 2025. Aerospace has a big role to play in reaching the targets of domestic defense production of $25 billion and exports of $5 billion by 2025. India will have moved from defense production of $11 billion to $25 billion by 2025.

This includes the LUH new generation single engine helicopter to be designed and developed by HAL.

In 2020 even with a lead of 7 million votes Biden could have lost the election without 45,000 votes in Georgia, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Mrs. Clinton with 2.9 million vote lead lost the Electoral College without 80,000 votes in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The US Electoral College is unique among western countries and is based on a concept that the passions of the "general mass" of the population should be moderated by giving more power to smaller states. The US president is elected not by a direct vote but by a vote cast by state and its electoral college, and the total electoral college votes determines who won and who lost. The focus is on swingable states of which there were 10 in 2020.

The European Union governments are finding it increasingly difficult to salvage the Iran nuclear deal and lifting of sanctions. European governments rejected Iran's 60 day ultimatum to help circumvent U.S. Trump administration sanctions. The U.S. sanctions have already led to Iran's oil export to drop from 2.5 million barrels a day to 1 million. Lost shipments have cost Iran $10 billion hurting its economy. Initially European nations France and Germany hoped to keep the 2015 Iran nuclear deal by working with Iran, but this has become increasingly difficult with the Trump administration increasing sanctions including limiting access to U.S. markets for nations that do not cooperate with U.S. policy. The U.S. pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal and now it looks like the Europeans are faced with a difficult choice in continuing to work with Iran.

The questions about LIBOR rate manipulation were first raised in front page articles in the Wall Street Journal in spring 2008. In 2013 Deutsche Bank's U.S. financial systems were strongly criticized by the U.S. Federal Reserve. In April 2015 Deutsche Bank made a $2.5 billion legal settlement with the U.S. and British regulators for LIBOR rate rigging and admitted wrongdoing. It took BaFin the German regulator a long time to flag these irregularities in a strong manner, in its letter to Deutsche Bank. The comments in the Senior Management Review section of its report for the first time expressed in this level of detail the problems at Deutsche Bank, including problems with 11 current or former executives of Deutsche Bank. The letter and report were sent to the bank's management board May 11, 2015. A month later co-CEO's Anshu Jain and Jurgen Fritschen resigned. Ba Fin's top supervisor of large banks, Frauke Menke sent the letter. By the time BaFin acted many other regulators had already flagged the problems at the bank, and the media including the WSJ had already covered the problems in great detail. Between the first report in the WSJ on Libor rate irregularities and the May 11, 2015 report was a period of 7 years. ...

BBC News covers the opposition by business leaders in the U.S. to president Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate change agreement. With the investigations in Congress underway the analysts see the move as political to shore up support with the Trump base. Portugal's economy is shrinking. Austerity measures taken in exchange for 78 billion euros from the IMF and the EU under a May, 2011 agreement have reduced the prospects of growth. The ratio of debt to GDP was 107% in May 2011. It is expected to reach 118% in 2013 because the economy is shrinking- even though Portugal will have achieved its targets for reducing the budget deficit. Portugal's finance minister, Vitor Gaspar, a former ECB research director, has reduced the budget deficit by one third by cutting spending, pensions, wages and increasing taxes. GDP fell by 1.5% in 2011 and is expected to decline by 3% in 2012. Even the IMF says in its recent economic review that if growth is lacking the debt of Portugal "would not be sustainable." David Bencek, analyst at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, says that the Portuguese economy lacks the structure needed to grow, and therefore has debt that is unsustainable. Portugal lacks a manufacturing base and exports, and was just emerging from decades of neglect by military rulers of education and other essential parts of a modern economy when it joined the EU....

An account of the meetings between Speaker Boehner and president Obama in the fiscal cliff negotiations. The WSJ pieced together the flow of the negotiations based on interviews with aides and lawmakers. There is little to show the two sides closer than before the election. If anything the WSJ report concludes the discussions this time left both sides further apart, and the lack of trust in the relations between Republicans and president Obama has worsened. Speaker Boehner asks Obama at one meeting what he gets in return for offering $800 billion in revenues and Obama tells him he gets nothing. At another meeting Obama tells Boehner he is asking Obama to accept Mitt Romney's tax plan and sees no reason to do that. Obama's first offer is for $1.6 trillon in new revenue over 10 years, a permanent increase in the debt ceiling and $400 billion in spending cuts. The Republicans find 25 cents of spending cuts for every dollar in tax increases as simply unacceptable and hold out for $1 in cuts for $1 in new tax revenues. Obama drops down to $1.2 trillion in new revenues and Boehner asks for $100 billion in additional spending cuts. Boehner drops a demand for raising the Medicare eligibility age. Obama raises the tax figure for the Bush tax increases to incomes over $400,000, Boehner proposes $1 million. But no level of trust has been gained in the negotiations. And no rapport established, as at one point Boehner tells Obama the two can just stare at each other or he Boehner could come back. Boehner then proposes to pass Plan B in the House for Bush tax cuts on incomes over $1 million. At that point the president feels the Republicans are not negotiating in good faith and some Republican Congressman in the House say they would not support Plan B. The distrust on all sides is worse than before. In the weeks leading to this in Dec. 2012 a review of oped pages show Democrats and Republicans saying a bad agreement- meaning too much in spending cuts for Democrats and too much in tax increases for Republicans- was worse than the fiscal cliff of automatic cuts, which could be addressed in other ways....

Toyota seeing the American market in sharp decline has finally realized the need to build up manufacturing capacity in India. Today it ranks seventh in sales in India behind Suzuki and Honda. Its market share actuallly slipped in 2003 to 3.5% from 4.7% partly because it neglected having a lowpriced small car in its lineup. Toyota sees the Indian market growing in the long term even though it is slowing down this year with effects of the global credit and economic crisis. In 2007 Toyota sold 54,000 vehicles in India. It now plans to increase sales to 400,000 vehicles by 2015 or about 10% of the projected passenger car market of 4 million vehicles by 2015. To do this it plans to add new models, including a lower cost car and open a plant with capacity of 100,000 vehicles a year. It is also opening a Technical Training Institute. In September Honda plans to open a technical college. And other carmakers have formed partnerships with India's technical institutes for training. What it hopes to do is instill lessons of discipline, for instance exercizes are part of the routine and inspections are made at morning exercizes to ensure that hair, uniform and other details conform to Toyota standards. It teaches subjects like math, English and Japanese as well as teaching skills in welding auto assembly and maintenance. And it teaches lessons in company principles of eliminating waste, continuous improvement and consensus building. And it teaches hard work and resilience with one sign on the campus reading "small drops of water make a mighty ocean", reminding one of the power of small individual efforts combined and organized over long periods of time to build great things, like Toyota's own efforts from its humble beginnings from scratch in the thirties. To get the right kind of person for training Toyota looks for about 180 junior high school graduates from poor farming families from a large pool of applicants, who would be open to new ideas and training, and have the right kind of temperament and discipline and intelligence to make good factory employees in a Toyota type production system of continuous improvement and cooperative effort....

Ilan Berman, vice president of the Foreign Policy Council in Washington D.C., cites former finance minister Alexei Kudrin about capital flight from Russia reaching as high as $160 billion in 2014. This is a result of Russian policies in Ukraine that are creating a high degree of uncertainty and investor fears about the Russian economy. The result Kudrin says would be a stagnating economy. This follows the emerging market crisis in the beginning of 2014, which hit Turkey, Argentina, and Brazil. Kudrin is respected for his efforts to strengthen Russia's finances in Putin's first term in office, and left the administration over disagreement with prime minister Medvedev on damage to finances from higher defense spending. This suggests Putin and Medvedev in their first terms as president conducted more prudent policies for the economy than they are doing in Putin's second term. A certain recklessness seems to have crept in as many respected advisors from that period have left over differences in policy, including how protests and the opposition's views should be handled. This includes Medvedev's early efforts after elections for dialogue with the opposition parties which were set aside by Putin. The danger with having a Bolivarist class of tycoons as in Venezuela and some developing countries, instead of wiser heads around him for Putin, is that he will lose the advice and counsel he so badly needs to conduct policies without letting emotions getting the better of a sound judgement. A large foreign exchange reserve is a buffer for Russia, but this needs to be used to diversify the economy away from dependence on oil and commodities by investing in technology industries to create jobs in other fields, and not wasted in higher defense spending and fighting investor sentiment for the value of the ruble. It also shows that there is an inherent value in having a "loyal opposition" and "shadow cabinet," and these institutions were not invented over centuries of practice in government without a reason, in that they actually help the governing administration pursue prudent policy without arbitrary actions. The irony is that the very fears of 1998 repeating itself with the "chaos" of western style democracy and politics and manipulation by oligarchs- a Putin complaint- is reversing the gains made by Russia since then, with another set of tycoons and vested interests in place. Russians, like the Germans can learn to make democracy work without a centuries long history of democratic traditions, elections and free media. Czarist traditions can be overcome just as the Prussian traditions were overcome, and Russians can come up with their own Wily Brandts and Gaucks, leaving behind the old history of suppressing contrary opinions. For this to happen Russians including Mr. Putin need to leave their own fears behind, and trust the Russian people for the right instincts and values and maturity of judgement, just as the Germans have done and succeeded. ...

Petrobras remains stuck in 2016 with a huge debt load of over $125 billion and a slump in oil prices. CEO Aldemir Bendine is a career government banker appointed by President Rousseff in 2015, as she faces impeachment proceedings for a corruption scandal involving Petrobras. His 11 months in office have been marked by disagreements with the board, with Bendine walking out from one meeting. Petrobras has changed chairmen twice in the 11 months. Bendine's goal of divesting assets worth $15 billion in 2016 may not be achievable say analysts, with other oil companies also divesting assets. As an outsider Bendine faces skepticism from insiders in the company. A oil strike went on for weeks before workers won a raise, resulting in lost production.

The marketshare of companies in China's smartphone market for the 1st quarter shows Samsung with a commanding lead of 25%, the Apple iPhone has only 6.5% of the market, Huawei comes in ahead of Nokia with 12% compared to Nokia's 11%, and close behind is ZTE with 11%, Lenovo with 8%, CoolPad with 6.2%. Motorola has 4.8%. HTC slipped badly and is now at 2.6%. With other companies having 13% of the market. The market is largely fragmented today with Samsung the leader. It also shows the very fluid nature of the market with many new entrants and rapidly changing positions for Samsung, Nokia and HTC. Nokia finds itself facing competition from many new entrants and a rapidly expanding Samsung, which accounts for its suddenly eroding position.

The IPO is expected to bring $10 billion and reduce the government's stake to below 50%. The IPO plans for the shares to go for between $26 and $29. For the government to breakeven the shares have to rise to about $50. GM plans to sell 24% of its total shares for $10 billion at the midpoint of the estimated share price. Under the plan, Treasury would sell $7 billion of its shares cutting its stake to 35% from 61%. The UAW trust which pays for retiree health care, would sell $2 billion of its shares. Canada and Ontario would sell about $1 billion of their shares. The government will try to recoup some of the $49.5 billion given to GM.
