This report in the Economist points to the improved situation for Mexico after the scare from Trump's plans to build the wall and deport large numbers of immigrants. The peso dropped by 15% between mid November 2016 and January 2017, but has since recovered, and non-oil exports were up 5.5% in February 2017 over prior year with the manufacturing growth in the U.S.  Growth forecasts are now up from about 1% GDP growth previously to 2% for 2017, close to the 2.3% in 2016. Much of the change in mood in Mexico is a result of the failure of the early travel bans being blocked in the courts, the failure to get health care legislation through Congress, and the effort by the trade advisers and economic advisers around Trump to move Trump's positions more to the centre and closer to traditional Republican party positions. Wilbur Ross, the Commerce Secretary, says " a sensible agreement" can be reached with Mexico. Peter Navarro, trade adviser, talks about making "a mutually beneficial regional powerhouse." Robert Lighthizer, a veteran from the Reagan days, is likely to be made the new U.S. Trade representative. Still as the Economist points out the "20% border adjustment tax" continues to be supported by Paul Ryan in Congress to pay for tax cuts. But certainly the mood has lifted in Mexico in the first 100 days. This is true for economic policy in relation to China and Germany, and the close circle of Ross, National Economic Council head Gary Cohn, and Secretary of State Tillerson is moving Trump to the centre in policy statements to get things done. Mexico is faced with internal challenges of reestablishing the rule of law, improving infrastructure, reducing red tape and corruption, addressing problems in the education system, to promote economic growth. These challenges may prove to be as large as the external challenges were once thought to be. ...

Ron Pinnelli of AutoData says the main difference between automakers doing well and ones that are struggling is a few big successes and a solid product line. The Detroit automakers need a good hit, a home run like the Honda Civic and some solid sellers. This is what Ford, GM need, one or two good hits and a the rest of the line pretty solid. Note auto sales increase 0.6 % overall for Feb. 2006 and the market is holding up. Note also 1) GM is deemphasizing fleet sales- "taking our medicine and going on." - Good thing in the long run. 2) Toyota sales not up by that much 2.6% in Feb. 2006. 3) Honda's success is a result of new Honda Civic sales which went up by 37% in Feb 2006, and helped increase Honda's market share from 7.8% in the prior year to 8.5%, according to Autodata.

Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley say that there were signs of the problems even a year earlier, HSBC a British bank set aside $1.76 billion to cover potential losses, and a former Federal Reserve Governor published a book in June on subprime mortages going bust. So for ratings agencies to wait till July 2007, to reduce their ratings makes them look ridiculous. Lehman's Malvey, global fixed income strategist quoted here sees a recession in 2008 into 2009, as the impact spreads to retail stores and to car buyers. One reason for this is that jumbo loans on homes are going to cost much more than before, slowing the housing market even more, and the number of housing loans going bad will rise in coming months.

Kaushik Basu, economist at Cornell University, and Chief Economist at the World Bank, says the U.S. Federal Reserve should consider the current low labor participation rate and low inflation in its rate policy setting decisions in 2015. Basu points out that in the recent past unemployment has gone below the current 5.5% without increasing the risks of inflation. He cites the period from July 1997 to August 2001 when inflation was below 5%, and at some points below 4%, yet inflation in 2002 was close to 2%. The large number of discouraged workers in this economic cycle has placed the unemployment rate below what it really is, says Basu.

This article by Saeed Shah and Syed Hasan describes the Taliban factions from the tribal areas that control parts of Karachi, Pakistan's main commercial city on the Arabian Sea. It provides a detailed map showing the outlying areas around the city centre, especially the shantytown areas and the areas with Pashtun majority population controlled by Taliban with roots in the tribal areas. The Taliban charge taxes and adminster law in the areas they control. A major operation was launched since Sept. 2013 by the Sharif government to free this key city of Pakistan from Taliban control and the wave of kidnappings, extortion and other violence from Taliban members. About 168 police officers have been killed in the efforts to control the city, but areas under Taliban control are still hard to patrol by government police and special Ranger force. Karachi anxiously awaits the result of peace talks of the Sharif government with Taliban. If the talks fail and an operation is launched against Taliban in tribal areas the repercussions will be felt in Karachi. Shah and Hasan provide a excellent picture of the tribal loyalties, religious extremism and entrenched culture of violent activity that extends from the border tribal regions of Pakistan into the commercial centres such as Karachi that is a vexing problem for the Sharif administration, police, business and ordinary citizens....

This report by Landon Thomas Jr. of the NYT describes what happened in the days before and the 48 hours before the referendum decision was announced by June 27, 2015. It shows talks progressing right up to Monday, June 22, 2015. By June 23 Greece received a paper marked in red from the IMF, EU and the ECB on their proposal of June 22. The Greek proposal of June 22 rejected pension cuts and removal of tax breaks for Greek islands, but proposing instead a series of tax increases and increase in pension contributions to be made by companies in Greece. The reply marked up disagreement areas on the paper which voiced objections to too many tax increases as hurting business growth, need to simplify value added taxes, and insisting on pension cuts and reforms. The two advisors Tsipras had used were a complete contrast to the new advisor and finance minister Mr. Tsakalotos he was to use in negotiations after July 7, 2015. Nikos Pappas is described here as an academic with a temper and Varoufakis as a person who would not hesitate to confront and lecture the creditors negotiators. Varoufakis who already had arguments and shouting matches with his counterparts on the other side, had a difficult relationship with the Dutch finance minister, Dijsselbloem, who was the chief of eurozone finance ministers. Dijseelbloem especially objected to Varoufakis lecturing on the need for a debt haircut. Varoufakis was removed from the discussions for a period of several weeks as a result and his reintroduction on June 25 was to have a negative effect on the EU and German negotiators. The same issue of debt came up again in discussions on June 25, 2015, and Varoufakis confronted the EU ministers by calling on the IMF's Christine Lagarde to state if the debt was sustainable. Before that Dijsselbloem had already told him flatly that any discussion on debt reduction would make a deal impossible. At one point German finance minister Schauble argued with EU official Pierre Muscovici of France about his favorable comments on the Greece proposal, saying he could not get the Greek proposal through the German parliament, and saying the ony solution now was capital controls. IMF's Christine Lagarde responded by saying that debt reduction needed to be considered. According to this report the Dutch finance mnister did not wait for Lagarde to explain- he told Varoufakis that it was take it or leave it....

The Panic of 1907, the run on the bank for the Knickerbocker Trust Company, and its collapse. The intervention of JP Morgan that year came too late for Charles Barney, the President of Knickerbocker Trust, who shot himself and died after 4 hours. In the preceding years Knickerbocker went through rapid growth in deposits, and in 1903 Barney even had a huge Corinthian columned structure of Vermont marble, and a lavish banking room inside built at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. See the pictures of that structure. It shows how things end up with rampant expansion. Growth, rampant expansion, flamboyant display, excess, crisis, panic, disaster and rescue. A cycle that repeats itself as new generations have no recollection of what had happened before, and no sense of history. With the expansion a sense of exhilaration and selfcongratulation makes way for abandonment of caution, excess, paving the way for disaster. And this hits those involved in the excess as the AIG's and the Citigroups, but also those who have gone to sleep like the GM's, and those who have some exposure like GE with its GE Capital business. What is different in today's economy, and true of the 1930's, is the global nature of this when the excesses are of a global nature, and the countries are intertwined. In this sense the current period involves Asian economies also, in addition to the European and American economies that was true in 1930's. The contrast with today is that a year later by October 1908 the panic had ended, and depositors of the Knickerbocker and other banks had received their money in full. A recovery was on the way. This was isolated to the US economy and to the banks. The global crisis of the 1930's was 23 years away. In 1997 the Asian economies like S. Korea, Thailand and Indonesia suffered a banking crisis, before this there was a finacial crisis in Mexico, and around this time a financial crisis in Russia. There were smaller crises like the LTCM crisis in the US but most were localized like the 1907 Panic. Now 11 years after the 1997 crisis in Asia, we have a global crisis and it is multifaceted, affecting banks, but also consumers and export driven economies in Europe and Asia with spillover effects. ...

Founded in 1880, Carl Welcker's company has seen the changing fortunes of manufacturing for over a century, during depression and after the wars. Still the 50% drop in orders for this company, which makes the machines that make 80% of the spark plugs in the world, is like nothing Carl Welcker has experienced. Its a tragedy he says. Its the speed of the manufacturing decline that is causing concern. In Europe where a fifth of GDP comes from manufacturing industrial production is down 12% from ayear ago. In Brazil it is down 15%, in Taiwan 43%. In China exports are down 25%. In the USA, industrial output went down by 11% in February 2009, according to the Federal Reserve. The pattern of this decline recalls the pattern of 1929, as tightening creedit and consumer fear reduces demand for manufactured goods in one country after another, creating a downward spirtal that reduces global trade. And of concern is that trade is declining even faster than manufacturing.German exports are down 20% from ayear ago, Japan's have plunged 46%, and in the USA exports fell at an annualized rate of 23.6% in the fourth quarter of 2008. A company like Schutte in Cologne, Germany, expanded rapidly as globalization opened new markets in Eastern Europe and Asia. Sales more than doubled in 5 years from 58 million euros to 100 million euros. Which suggests that the extraordinarily rapid expansion of the last few years may have its reverse effect heightened in a slowdown, as those additional sales to China and Eastern Europe disappear. For the USA manufacturing accounts for 14% of GDP, for the world 18%, and for China 33%. But this creates a misperception about the importance of American manufacturing exports. First, manufacturing contributed more to GDP growth than any other sector of the US economy, and accounts for two thirds of American exports, says the chief economist for the National Association for Mnaufacturers in Washington. America's share of global manufacturing output, he says, has remained steady at 20 to 23% for the past decade. This covers jet engines, locomotives, pharmaceuticals, and high tech products. For countries like India where manufacturing accounts for 16% of GDP, the last quarter of 2008 saw the first quarterly production decline in over a decade. And industries like handicrafts exports have fallen by 55% to $1.35 billion, and textile makers have cut half a million jobs. ...

The dollars situation may not be as bad as it looks. There are signs that the dollar is strengthening against the British pound and the Australian dollar and other important currencies. And the weaker dollar is already working to reduce imbalances in America's trade deficit. There are two aspects of the dollar's role, one is as a means of international exchange and the other as a store of value. For the first reserves of any country need to be highly convertible and America offers highly liquid markets and this has not changed. As a store of value the dollar has lost some of it value especially against the euro. But the reason that the dollar should not see a sudden drop in value is because the largest holders of dollar reserves China with $1.4 trillion and Japan with $1 trillion would stand to lose by shifting out of dollars significantly at atime when the dollar was so undervalued besides hurting their export markets if it affected the US economy. And though the euro looks good in the short term, over the longer term Europe's aging societies may see lower growth and the future may look different once the USA has corrected some of it imbalances which is precisely what the weaker dollar accomplishes as the US exports start humming. Seen against the historical background the USA has periodically gone through this situation with dollar weakness in 1977-79, 1985-88, 1993-95. In 1985 the dollar went to 81 Japanese yen and there was concern about its reserve currency status at the time. However the dollar has weathered these storms. And there is always the option for a country to peg its currency not to one currency alone but to a combination of the dollar and the euro. This was the case before 1914 when 3 currencies the British Pound, the French Franc and the German Mark were used. In the post 1918 environment the dollar replaced the German mark alongside the Pound and the Franc. The Persian Gulf countries have this option so they can use their own monetary policy to control inflation by pegging not just to the dollar but to a basket of currencies as Kuwait has done. Questions raised about Dr Pazdur's decisions at FDA for anemia drugs made by Amgen and Johnson and Johnson. Dr Pazdur is head of the FDA office that regulates oncology drugs, all cancer drugs. Dr Pazdur's review process and decision shows how reviewers are human and their own experience helps determine what they see prominently. His experience with his father who suffered severely from the side effects of steroid drugs would make him aware of the the other effects of drugs. He is an oncologist, his wife is an oncology nurse, and some relatives have died of cancer, so he has lived with cancer patients. It appears from close associates that he like open communication and hears all sides but makes the final decision himself. He had an experience with a drug for lung cancer Iressa made by Astra -Zeneca, which the FDA approved based on testimonials, but not enough statistical evidence, which later failed and approval had to be withdrawn. This may have made him more inclined to look for strong results and statistical evidence before concluding on the safety and effectivenes of a drug. An approach evident with Amgen's anemia drug. It also appears that the FDA is not clear on whether the drug's effectiveness is to be judged by what result, is it whether it prolongs life only that counts, or whether the effectiveness in relieving significantly the symptoms of a patient even if life is not prolonged. There is the controversy surrounding the FDA's rejection of a drug by Genta Inc Genasense that relieved patient symptoms for leukemia but did not prolong their life. These and other questions continue to give sleepless nights to people at the FDA and outside as the drug review process faces difficult balancing act between what to give importance and what direction to take with a drug in patient's interests. In Dr Pazdur's case this is made more difficult as he thinks every day of his father who died in 1979 and suffered from the side effects of steroid drugs, went blind when Dr Pazdur was only a teen, and had pulmonary fibrosis and diabetes. He is described by doctors who trained under him as gentle but did meet a patient's eyes and tell him that he had to come to terms with his disease. ...

Zara which started with one store in La Coruna aport town in a remote part of northern Spain is the second largest retail clothing chain after Gap Stores now has3691 stores in 68 countries, adding 560 stores in the last 12 months and entering new markets in places like Croatia, Columbia, Guatemala, and Oman. Its best known for fast fashion and updating fashion frequently with new fashion clothing coming in twice a week. Lower volumes mean they sell out fast and don't require writedowns and fashions that fly can be resupplied quickly because Zara does most of its manufacturing (two thirds) in Spain or in countries nearby like Portugal, Morocco and Turkey. The closeness of manufacture and the logistics are set up such that the orders can be made quickly with sales monitored constantly on computers at La Coruna HQ and at stores locations and the manufacture and shipping can be done speedily. Not requiring writedowns and selling lower cost fashion at higher prices especially outside Spain where prices are higher (40% higher in New York for instance) and having an efficient system with costs weeded out and focus on building the brand and pleasing customers to command good profit margins enables Zara to continue manufacturing in Spain where costs are not what they would be in China or Vietnam. As other stores are learning from Zara and doing this in their stores Zara is working on refocussing its formula and fine tuning it to stay ahead of competitors. For example its making sure costs do not rise faster than sales, for first half 2007 costs went up 16% and sales went up 19%. Staff is being scheduled using new software based on sales volume at differen times, so that more salespeople work at peak times such as lunchtime or early evening, which enable Zara to cut 2% of hours worked. Alarm tags are attached at the factory, and the newest collections get labelled NEWC and are rushed to the floor on plastic hangars and only later switched to wooden hangers, and store managers now use handheld computers to sho garments ranking by sales so reordering can be done quickly in less than an hour....
