Efforts at Caltech and MIT to produce hydrogen based energy from light absorbing materials that combine sunlight and water vapor to emit hydrogen. Three innovation hubs have been set up by the U.S. Energy Department including the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at Caltech. The project has $122 million in funding from DOE. The research is especially applicable for a product that can be used to provide energy in developing countries - using existing resources and providing a small power station as it were for each home without the large energy needs of developed countries.

She says inspiration and daring has to be backed up with a lot of persistence and perseverance. Many ideas says Glimcher, are wrong. Kohls online retail sales show margins of 4% compared to 10% for in-store sales. Wal-Mart is losing money on online sales as it invests in technology and infrastructure for Web operations. Best Buy's margins are thin on online sales. Shipping and handling, higher returns, and lower prices lead to lower margins on online retail sales. Robert Shiller of Yale University, calls for revenue sharing by the federal government with local governments. This should go beyond the $26 billion approved this month for aid to local governments, designed to assist with Medicaid and hiring teachers. It is difficult to create jobs quickly and disperse and use money wisely, without the help of local governments, military or nonprofit organizations- as these organizations have the necessary infrastructure that can be used to get things done quickly. Axel Friedrich, a top German Environmental Agency regulator who advocates using modifications of existing vehicles as a more effective solution to the auto emissions problem. He recently reconfigured the VW Golf to show that by making changes- such as lighter seating and weight saving hood other steps to reduce the car's weight, low resistance tires, and engines that turn off when stopped and start when accelerator is pressed, more efficient gear ratios, removing the mirrors and substituting tiny cameras, and improving the aerodynamics- emissions can be cut 25% even with horsepower intact. Working with the Institute of Automotive Engineering at RWTH University in Aachen, Germany, Axel redesigned the Golf in this way to achieve a CO2 emissions reduction from 172 grams per kilometer to 131 grams and is working to bring it to 120 grams. 120 grams per kilometer is the EU's tentative target for emissions for cars sold in the region by 2012. Automakers have for years complained that this would be difficult to do in this manner because customers were concerned about safety and comfort. Its not clear that this would affect safety. However with global warming a big issue in Europe, most automakers are making changes now to prepare for a shift to 120 grams per kilometer in emissions. VW has announced a diesel version of the gasoline version that incorporates some of the redesign changes that Axel Friedrich made on his Golf, such as low resistance tires, and more efficient gear ratios, lower chassis for improved aerodynamics etc. This diesel version costs a base price of euros 20,615, and is only euros 315 mor than a standard diesel Golf. BMW has a new diesel version of its 1-Series with low resistance tiresand a gearshift indicator, which emits 16% less CO2 and costs nearly same as its predecessor. At Frankfurt Auto Show Mercedes Mercedes is expected to announce more cars with stop start systems. All this will help automakers in Germany achieve the EU 2008 target of 140 grams of CO2 emissions by 2008 on the way to the 2012 EU target of 120 grams. ...

The U.S. and Japan sign a new security agreement in 2015 which removes a geographical constraint on Japan participating in joint action with the U.S. in protecting vital global interests. The agreement is called the Joint Defense Guidelines. The agreement will enable Japan's Defense Forces with the permission of its parliament to participate in such action. Earlier agreements limited action to the defense of Japanese territories. A new alliance coordination mechanism will be established with officials from diplomatic, defense and military departments of the two countries. Consultations between the U.S. and Japan will take place through this mechanism in peacetime and in emergency situations. The new guidelines also include joint development of weapons systems and sharing of military technology, and cooperation on cybersecurity, missile defense, reconaissance activity. Japan's reinterpretation of its Constitution will now be discussed in parliament in the context of this agreement, to clarify what other activities Japan can take on....

Britain's Labor Party leader makes a speech favoring strong Britain- EU relations in an effort to attract support from pro-EU Conservatives in parliament and bring about early elections. Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Irish prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the European Council's president Donald Tusk warned of a "special place in hell" for politicians who promoted Brexit "without even a sketch of a plan." Tusk was also critical of Jeremy Corbyn saying there was a leadership void at the heart of the Remain movement. "Today there is no political force and no effective leadership for Remain."  Tusk said there are no alternative arrangements that could replace the backstop, saying "the backstop is needed as a guarantee, A safety net is not a safety net if it can be destroyed by one party."
