Google has launched a new project using technology to let users tour art galleries around the world. This was launched at Tate Britain in London. This is part of Google's latest interactive online resource called Art Project. This is a collaboration with 17 museums including three in New York - the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Visitors can examine in detail certain artworks selected by the museums- Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night,' Pieter Bruegel the Elder's "The Harvesters," and a painting by Bellini.

Fuji Heavy which makes Subaru cars is targeting sales of 50,000 cars in 2010 for China. It has no factory there and says it needs 100,000 in sales for putting up a factory in China. Sales in the US were robust and went up 39% in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, to 227,000. Sales for 2010 are targeted at 244,000 vehicles for USA. Fuji Heavy plans to source smaller models from Toyota- which has a16% stake in Fuji Heavy- so that it can address demand in emerging markets like Russia and China.

New Democracy has 22% and Pasok 18% in polls before the Greece elections. A New Democracy-Pasok coalition is one possible outcome of the election. New Democracy leader Samaras sees a coalition government as tying his hands for policy actions, and feels he can win another election if it took place later this year. By then the thhinking goes Greeks will have vented their anger and will be looking for a stable government. Both parties have seen supporters shift to fringe parties with 22% unemployment and rising taxes.

Amar Bhide touches on the unpredictable consequences of devaluations while commenting on the supposed benefit of a country having its own currency vs a currency such as the euro. The euro takes away the advatantage of devaluing the national currency as a way to regain competitiveness. Bhide points out that devaluations hurt the elderly on fixed incomes and low wage workers. Protections have to be put in place for the sections of the population that are badly affected. Large union negotiated wage increases can also reduce the benefits of devaluation in terms of regaining competitiveness.

How a "stand-off" no-fly zone can be implemented for Libya by ships and aircraft operating off the coast of Libya with precision guided missiles. This would deny the regime in Tripoli the use of the airspace. This is possible because most of Libya's cities are on the coast. No aircraft need to fly over Libya and an attack on the air defenses of the Tripoli regime would not be needed. Combined with shoulder fired surface to air missiles in the hands of rebel forces this would be an effective deterrent.

Chernobyl nuclear disaster area in Ukraine as it is today. Cesium's half-life is 30 years and strontium's half-life is 29 years. Scientific estimates show that it takes about 10-13 half-lives, or about 300 years, for the radioactive effects to disappear and for life to return to the area. The contaminated area around the Chernobyl reactor is about 15,000 square miles or about the size of Switzerland. Efforts at Caltech and MIT to produce hydrogen based energy from light absorbing materials that combine sunlight and water vapor to emit hydrogen. Three innovation hubs have been set up by the U.S. Energy Department including the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at Caltech. The project has $122 million in funding from DOE. The research is especially applicable for a product that can be used to provide energy in developing countries - using existing resources and providing a small power station as it were for each home without the large energy needs of developed countries.

She says inspiration and daring has to be backed up with a lot of persistence and perseverance. Many ideas says Glimcher, are wrong. It takes time and effort for scientists to get acceptance of new ideas to replace old beliefs. In the history of science this can be seen as a recurring pattern with each discovery, each scientist struggling to get new ideas tested and proved to win acceptance.

Kohls online retail sales show margins of 4% compared to 10% for in-store sales. Wal-Mart is losing money on online sales as it invests in technology and infrastructure for Web operations. Best Buy's margins are thin on online sales. Shipping and handling, higher returns, and lower prices lead to lower margins on online retail sales. The lower costs from not having to maintain an actual store network with real estate and labor costs is offset by these costs which can run as high as 25%, according to industry analysts.

It says the neeeds of poorer countries are likely to overwhelm what the IMF and the World Bank can do. And called for seting up a"vulnerability fund". This should go beyond the $26 billion approved this month for aid to local governments, designed to assist with Medicaid and hiring teachers. It is difficult to create jobs quickly and disperse and use money wisely, without the help of local governments, military or nonprofit organizations- as these organizations have the necessary infrastructure that can be used to get things done quickly. He cites the Civilian Conservation Corps created by FDR, using the Army as the organizational framework.

Axel Friedrich, a top German Environmental Agency regulator who advocates using modifications of existing vehicles as a more effective solution to the auto emissions problem. He recently reconfigured the VW Golf to show that by making changes- such as lighter seating and weight saving hood other steps to reduce the car's weight, low resistance tires, and engines that turn off when stopped and start when accelerator is pressed, more efficient gear ratios, removing the mirrors and substituting tiny cameras, and improving the aerodynamics- emissions can be cut 25% even with horsepower intact. Working with the Institute of Automotive Engineering at RWTH University in Aachen, Germany, Axel redesigned the Golf in this way to achieve a CO2 emissions reduction from 172 grams per kilometer to 131 grams and is working to bring it to 120 grams. 120 grams per kilometer is the EU's tentative target for emissions for cars sold in the region by 2012. Automakers have for years complained that this would be difficult to do in this manner because customers were concerned about safety and comfort. Its not clear that this would affect safety. However with global warming a big issue in Europe, most automakers are making changes now to prepare for a shift to 120 grams per kilometer in emissions. VW has announced a diesel version of the gasoline version that incorporates some of the redesign changes that Axel Friedrich made on his Golf, such as low resistance tires, and more efficient gear ratios, lower chassis for improved aerodynamics etc. This diesel version costs a base price of euros 20,615, and is only euros 315 mor than a standard diesel Golf. BMW has a new diesel version of its 1-Series with low resistance tiresand a gearshift indicator, which emits 16% less CO2 and costs nearly same as its predecessor. At Frankfurt Auto Show Mercedes Mercedes is expected to announce more cars with stop start systems. All this will help automakers in Germany achieve the EU 2008 target of 140 grams of CO2 emissions by 2008 on the way to the 2012 EU target of 120 grams. ...
