Russia's national airline, Aeroflot, has goen through a transformation by improving safety and inflight service through a rigorous program of training for pilots and inflight service personnel by 2015. It is 51 percent state owned. Aeroflot has the advantage of the Moscow hub which cuts passenger travel time to distant destinations by 2 hours compared to Dubai hub of Emirates airlines. Senator Lamar Alexander is a kind of misssionary for electric cars and for a major push with government assistance in this area. A bill sponsored by Alexander and Senator Byron Dorgan plans to designate 5 to15 urban areas as model locations for electric car use. These areas would get money for infrastructure such as recharging stations, and people in the areas would get an additional tax credit to take the tax credit from $7,500 to $10,000. The bill has important provisions for promoting research at companies and universities to improve electric car batteries. $1.5 billion would be allocated for research in electric car batteries, and a $10 million prize for the person or company able to build a battery with a 500 mile range. The total cost- $10 billion.

Rep. Paul and Rep Barney Frank call for cutting defense spending as they convene a Sustainable Defense Task Force of defense analysts. This task force recommends $1 trillion in cuts over the next 10 years. Defense Secretary Gates is preparing the Defense department for this change. Gates is looking for smart ways to cut costs while still keeping the defense capabilities intact, but cutting unnecessary overhead and unnecessary programs like the second type of engine for the F-35 fighter jet.

The number of supercommuters is up significantly as a result of the drop in home prices and high unemployment. It is up 60% in Manhattan since 2002, up to 59,000 or 3% of the workforce. In the Philadelphia- New Jersey corridor- it is 7.3% according to NYU. Houston saw a large increase between 2002 and 2009. In Maricopa County near Phoenix, 131,000 people or 8.6% of the labor force supercommutes. About 13% of the workforce or 427,000 people supercommute in Texas. Prof. Mitchell Moss of New York University, defines a 100 mile plus commute to get to work as a supercommute. His work at NYU's Rudin Center for Transportation shows 1.15 million people supercommuting in 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas. Employers are showing flexibility not wanting to have to dispose off properties, and employees prefer not to uproot families.

The Fed plans to sell $267 billon in short term debt through the end of the year. This is because a large number of U.S. tech and blue chip companies have good earnings and cash positions, and lower valuations. Commodities prices are volatile because China is raising interest rates to control inflation, slowing growth. Many emerging markets like Russia and Brazil are dependent on commodities exports making them riskier as China's growth slows.

Etihad Airways is in talks to take a 49% stake in Alitalia. Air France-KLM SA did not pursue a 300 million euro fundraising rights issue and as a result its stake dropped from 25% to 7.1%. Etihad gets a presence in Europe with the stake and it is part of a strategy to take minority stakes in other airlines to feed passengers to the airline. Stakes in other airlines include Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, and Darwin Airline.

Total public and private spending on health care in the U.S. will increase by 6.1% in 2014 compared to 2014 in a revised Commerce Department forecast. The total spending will reach $4.1 trillion in 2014 from $3.9 trillion in 2013. Some of the lower rise in spending than the earlier 7.4% forecast will come from 28 states opting out of Medicaid expansion under the health care overhaul because of a June 2012 Supreme Court ruling. Employers are trying to reduce costs and the public is reducing spending because of the recession. Less generous health plans mean users are paying more out of their own pocket, paying more attention to prices and even postponing care. Growth in health care costs is a about 3.9% a year since 2009 following the recession. The costs increase in 2015 by 5.8%, in 2018 by 5.9% and 2022 by 6.5%, according to U.S. government forecasts, because of enrollment in Medicare for baby boomers. This is still higher than the inflation rate of below 2%.
