Mexico's economy grew at 1.34% in the third quarter of 2011, according to the national statistics institute. Annual growth is estimated at 4% for 2011. The war against organized drug trafficking in Mexico cost the economy one percentage point of economic growth, according to estimates by BBVA Bancomer, Mexico's largest bank. Mexico received $20 billion in foreign investment in 2011, about the same as in 2010. Cars and aerospace have drawn large foreign investment. Mazda will invest $500 million on a new plant in central Mexico. Honda says it will spend $800 million on a second Mexican plant. In recent years with higher costs in China, higher transport costs, and a weaker peso with a stronger yuan, Mexico is becoming more competitive with China as a manufacturing investment location. The younger workforce, low inflation and technical education schooling, offer Mexico additional advantages. Mexico is the second largest manufacturer of flat screen television sets, and is now the fourth largest location for outsourced IT such as call centers. Axa CEO, Henri Castries, and Siemens CEO, Louise Goeser, have very favorable views of doing business in Mexico. Siemens sees sales increasing by double digits through 2015, and has located one of three global R&D centers in the state of Queretaro. Goeser says many parts of Mexico are safer than parts of the U.S. A large part of the violence is concentrated in a few states, and in border cities like Juarez, and affects smaller businesses more than the large manufacturing enterprises of overseas companies. As a result it is as if there were several economies in Mexico, with foreign enterprises largely insulated from the violence. ...

Its interesting that these large supply contracts were signed between Vale and Arcelor-Mittal on volume and not price, price will be negotiated annually. This is a good move because it secures supplies of a commodity in short supply but with a global slowdown Arcelor can negotiate based on the conditions in the market at that time which may be more favorable to steel producers amid declining demand and tougher negotiations from steel buyers like the auto companies.

With a unanimous vote of the company's board on Nov. 28, 2011, American Airlines filed for bankruptcy. Gerard Arpey, CEO since 2003, is known to have resisted the move. Arpey decided to retire and will be replaced as CEO and chairman by Thomas Horton, the president of American Airlines. Analysts and management say the move is a proactive effort to take action before AMR's financial posiiton deteriorates further. AMR has about $4.1 billion in cash and short term investments. One airline analyst described it as an offensive bankruptcy to reduce labor costs and leasing costs in a proactive manner. American Airlines management has said in the past that its costs are $800 million higher than other airlines, because its pilots fly shorter hours and have more liberal work rules. Cost per available seat mile, an industry metric including labor and operating costs, is about 10% higher for American compared to Delta Airlines. American is also hit by higher fuel costs especially because about a third of its fleet uses older McDonnell Douglas MD-80's, and its regional carrier American Eagle flies 50 seat jets that are less efficient. American has total losses of $11.4 billion for the period 2001-2010. Additional loss was incurred for $982 million in the three quarters of 2011. Efforts to increase fuel effiicency of its fleet which is on average 15 years old, are underway. A $38 billion order for 460 new single aisle planes from Airbus and Boeing, with $13 billion in financing from the aircraft companies, was placed in July 2011. AMR says it will keep the order as planned. The end result is likely to be a smaller airline with fewer employees, fewer planes, fewer routes, and cuts at AMR's smaller hubs in Los Angeles and Chicago, says one aviation specialist....

Why Vietnam is gaining acceptance as a high tech and tech outsourcing hub in Asia after India, China and the Philipines. Wages are lower and Vietnam has a youg labor pool with a focus on math and science in the universities. Intel's decision to build a chip plant in Vietnam and interest from software companies suggests Vietnam will be a site for outsourcing competing with others in Asia. English language skills are a limitation as compared to India and Philipines.

Remittances at $24 billion for 2007 were the largest source of foreign currency for Mexico. In 2007 foreign companies invested $23.2 billion to build factories or setup businesses in Mexico. Mexican growth estimates were cut by the central bank from 3.25% to 2.75%. The $24 billion in remittances is almost the same as 2006 as remittances were slowing down because of fewer jobs in construction for lower paid Mexicans. Tighter border security also means fewer people coming in from Mexico.

Fiat's Marchionne leads Chrysler. He will keep Jim Press as deputy CEO. Press is a veteran from Toyota. The four brand CEO's are Peter Fong for Chrysler, Michael Manley for Jeep, Michael Accavitti for Dodge, and Pietro Gorlier for Mopar. Except for Gorlier, all are Chrysler employees. Ralph Gilles continues as Design executive, and Scott Kunselman, a Chrysler veteran will lead product development. Frank Ewasyshyn will continue to lead manufacturing. Doug Betts will remain in charge of quality, and Scott Gaberding, as head of procurement. Only Marchionne and Richard Palmer, the new Chief Financial Officer are the new faces at the upper ranks. Marchionne's mesage to Chrysler employees is that Fiat was perceived by many as failing in 2004, " a lethargic automaker that produced low-quality cars." But he says "most of the people capable of remaking Fiat had been there all the time. Through hard work and tough choices, we have remade Fiat into a profitable company." One thing that Marchionne has already in mind is a flattened organization with which he says "we are able to increase speed of decision-making and improve communication." Marchionne is actually a manager who worked and spent many years in Canada. He got his MBA at the University of Windsor, in Windsor, Ontario, in 1980 and his LLB law degree from York University in Toronto. His parents immigrated to Canada when he was 13, and he grew up in Toronto. He worked at Deloitte Touche and Canadian companies before moving to Europe. So he is very familiar with working in North America. Compared to the young group he had working for him in changing Fiat, he has many older managers at Chrysler. ...

Middle managers is just a term, in reality leaders of tomorrow will be learning, practicing their craft, working on projects and products as a part of teams that report to some more experienced manager, who can provide the team the benefit of his experience and mentor these managers. These are not factory floor positions and interface directly with senior managers of the company. Without a seamless integration of all people in the company working in harmony, something has seriously gone wrong in the way the company should work. One might guess from the way companies especially financial institutions have been run, that along with CEO and senior manager aggrandizement, and layoffs of whitecollar workers who bear the brunt of the downturn along with people in the frontline in factories, that these teams and managers have been left out in the cold. Osterman in his book "The Truth about Middle Managers" points to this alienation of middle managers. These managers and teams especially in industries like the auto industry may lack the committment to the company and there may be widespread cynicism about the way senior management and CEO's are running the company. If things are happening the way they should these are the leaders of tomorrow and should be consulted and given increasing responsibility, and older management should make way for new leaders to better adapt to new conditions facing the company and meet new challenges. Instead as in the auto industry boards and CEO's and senior managers perpetuate themselves and their older mindset and their outdated strategies leading to disaster, and the elimination of the positions of these very managers and teams on which the real hopes of the company should rest....

The electricity grid in Africa is being strained by electricity demands of mining companies. Power outages are costing African economies as much as 2% of their GDP according to World Bank estimates. Energy shortages in South Africa are creating blackouts in South Africa and neighboring countries Botswana and Zambia and affecting the mining industry in these countries. South Africa's energy company Eskom is petitioning regulators for a hike of 50% in electricity prices to reduce demand. Shortages of electricity have increased prices of platiinum and other metals in the commodities industry. Mining in South Africa produces 7% of GDP but consumes 17% of the electricity leaving less for domestic consumption and for industry. Eskopm was late in ordering new plants not taking action till 2004. For Africa the total electricity generating capacity of 63 gigawats supplies 770 million people about what Spain generates for 40 million people. And the expression energy poor means that this shortage in urban areas means the rural poor wil have no electricity for decades to come. And in places like energy rich Port Harcourt Nigeria electricity is inconsistent or in dire shortage. An accountant at a construction firm in Dakar, Senegal has to choose between paying his child's school fees or paying for electricity, chooses to pay for electricity as prices have gone up by 88% in 3 years. And rural areas of Africa have little hope of electricity. This is another sign of how adverse effects of huge energy consumption in places like China and the wasteful consumption in the USA affect global energy prices and in turn affect the poorest in Africa. In places where the voices will never be heard. How boom times in some Asian and westen economies can lead to choices like fuel guzzling vehicles and energy wasteful plants in China that reverberate across Africa....

Johnson & Johnson begins a 60,000 person clinical trial on 3 continents in the final stage of testing. It could learn vital results in early next year which if positive would lead to government authorization for emergency use soon after. J&J will test whether a single dose of vaccine will work. It is also doing work separately with the UK government for a separate phase three study to test whether a 2 dose vaccine will work.

Other companies in final stage of testing are Moderna and Pfizer with studies results expected in October and Astra Zeneca working with Oxford expecting results by the end of 2020.

This part of Wisconsin at Mount Pleasant has a 3000 acre site that has water and sewer improvements, highway building, but no factory 5 years after Taiwan's Foxconn announced it was building a large factory here with 13000 new jobs. If built the plant would have received $3 billion in stat3e tax credits. Now the project developed by Racine County Development Corporation is looking for other companies that want to build factories. Under agreements Foxconn is expected to pay $36 million a year for 24 years if the project was not completed. It shows the difficulties American states face as they compete with other states for good factory projects.

After a long year of uncertainty this is what it comes down to. The new turnaround plan developed by CEO Fritz Henderson and the government's auto task force will leave the government owning more than half of GM. Under this plan GM will get an additional $11.6 billion in loans from Treasury, on top of the $15.4 billion already received. THer government will get half of the ownership of the company in payment for half of these two loans. And GM will use stock instead of cash to pay off half of the $20.4 billion it owes a United Auto Workers fund to cover retiree health care. That transaction will leave 39% of GM in the hands of the UAW. This happens just as another agreement was reached to leave the UAW with 55% ownership of restructured Chrysler, and FIat SpA getting 35%, with the US government and lenders owning the rest. What happens to bondholders? They were told to swap $27 billion of unsecured debt for a 10% company stake. GM and the government give bondholders little choice, if they do not do so GM's Fritz Henderson says GM will file for bankruptcy. In 2011 hourly workers will be less than 40,000. Market share will shrink to 18% in 2014 from 22% in 2008. The number of dealers will drop to 3605 by 2011, down 42% from 2008, and GM will kill the Pontiac brand. Much of the company will have disappeared, showing how market forces are at work in our system in destroying companies, and leaving them as a fragment of what they once were, if management gets complacent and makes a series of errors. Its a big development and shows the savy shown by the government auto task force's leaders in setting up the arrangements. A smaller GM will emerge. But this is an understatement if ever there was one. Here is a company that had close to 200,000 workers in 2000, with hourly workers close to 150,000. See the graph. ...

About 80% of Mexicans associate Pemex with corruption. Pemex union bosses oversee a system where workers get "paying jobs"- workers actually pay for these jobs and union officials benefit from this. The Pena Nieto administration faces the tough task of convincing a skeptical public that the constitutional changes to bring in foreign investment into the Mexican oil industry will benefit the workers. Many expect to lose jobs as the industry modernizes and new management is brought in to implement the changes.

Indian rating agency Crisil says expeditious settlement of stressed assets in India's banking system is needed for the private sector to play its part in the country's infrastructure development. In the last 4 years much of the effort in infrastructure was undertaken by the government. Crisil CEO Ashu Suyash, says Rupees 50 lakh crore needs to be allocated for capital investment in infrastructure for the 5 year period 2018- 2022. About Rupees 3000 crore investment per day is required. In addition to improving the banking system, other actions needed are new private-public partnership efforts, front ending of projects, and a deepening of the infrastructure financing system. Infrastructure investments have suffered from lack of investment in India and this should be a top priority for the government, say experts. This includes tapping into pension and insurance funds under new arrangements. The central government has announced a 7 lakh crore investment plan to build 83,000 kilometres of highways by 2022. Crisil has developed an "investability index" to track and measure the attractiveness of such projects.   ...

A report by pharmacy benefits managing company Express Scripts shows a 13% increase in the price of branded drugs in the U.S. from Sept 2011 to Sept 2012. Generic drug prices declined by 22% in this period. The report also shows that growing spending on specialty drugs for cancer, MS and other diseases is a big reason for the increase in prices of branded drugs. This report is from a random sample of six millon Express Scripts members using prescription drug coverage. Prof. Schondelmeyer of the University of Minnesota, who manages the drug benefits program at the university and conducts a similiar price report for AARP, says the potential benefits for these specialty drugs are not that good to justify the high prices.

Finance professors and experts on internet IPO's, Ritter at the University of Florida and Aggarwal, are skeptical that average investors would make money on the Facebook IPO. Ritter's information base shows that from 1980 to 2009, the average IPO's would jump 18% on the first day and 21% in the next three years, showing that hype and marketing with restricted supply of shares relative to demand created can artificially increase the price on the first day. As average investors get to invest after the opening day and on less favorable terms than the insiders and bankers doing the IPO, its not such a good deal for the average investor. Google performed well for the average investor, but this could be the exception rather than the rule. Google operates in a space, namely "search" engine, that is an essential part of the functioning of the internet space, which accounts for its continued growth. This may not be true for game firms such as Zynga, group discount sites such as Groupon, and social network sites such as Facebook, because their growth could stall suddenly. As Jason Zweig points out in the Journal, another factor is the starting price. At a high enough starting price the risk for investors could be high and returns may be no higher than the average 6-7% range....

The software business alone generates 43% of the company's profits. Services business accounts for 57% of its revenue. IBM also continues to expand in emerging markets making it possible for IBM to reduce the effects of cyclical swings in the economy. IBM shares are up 25% in the year to March 2012.

Global sales growth will be from developing countries as US sales slow down to the rate of a 4-5% growth, losing 1 percentage point and be at the level growth is in Europe. Laurence Kotlikoff is a Boston University economist who calls the Obama administration's plans for fixing the financial system akin to "putting a Band-Aid on cancer." He outlines his own proposal in a book just out with the title: Jimmy Stewart is Dead. It calls for taking the risk out of the nation's financial system with "too-big-to-fail" banks, which threaten America's financial system, and may cost huge amounts of taxpayer money approaching by one estimate the entire unfunded liabilities of the Social Security System. He writes in the book that "the problem is the leveraging of the taxpayer by people with no formal training in finance or economics, no personal downside, an assortment of Napoleonic complexes, the money to buy ratings in New York and policy in Washington, and the ability to run circles around regulators." His proposal is to turn banks - intermediaries taking deposits and making loans- into institutions that connect borrowers and depositors with very safe mutual funds created for this reason. Each deposit would be pooled with other deposits in the new kind of mutual fund with all the money held in cash. These mutual funds would supply loans. This strips banks of their risk-taking function. It has attracted attention and support of Columbia University's Jeffrey Sachs and University of Chicago's Nobel Prize winning economist Robert Lucas. Most recently Bank of England's Governor mentioned Kotlikoff three times in a speech to Parliament as ideas worth looking at. With bankssstripped of risk-taking only one single Federal Financial Authority as the national regulator would be needed, instead of the myriad regulators in the current system that have failed in crises. MIT's Simon Johnson agrees that some strong action is needed and compares the need for action with what Theodore Roosevelt had to do to break up the once impregnable Standard Oil. By 1911 the Supreme Court had broken up Standard Oil into 34 companies....

The advanced technology on the Noble Bully 1 oil drilling rig in deep waters 140 miles south of New Orleans. It is jointly owned by Shell and Noble Corp. The technological improvements on the rig could only have been imagined a few years ago. A Eiffel tower shaped structure is completely enclosed in the rig compared to open derrick structures used on earlier rigs. The technology includes GPS, wind sensors, motion sensors, hydraulic systems, computer controlled thruster propellers on the bottom of the vessel to drill wells with precision. It can operate in water 8250 feet deep to 12,000 feet with safety upgrades, and upto 40,000 feet. A similiar ship Noble Bully 2 operates on the coastal part of Brazil. A new platform called Olympus will be a tension leg platform floaing on the sea like a cork, held together by tying it to the ocean floor using cables. The project is called the Mars B development. New sensors use seismic technology with devices closer to the ocean floor in the Gulf picking up data. The data is sent to Shell scientists working onshore and produces four dimensional maps of oil reservoirs using computer chips. The cost savings for the smaller structure include less steel and less fuel used, zero toxic emissions, and operating with 160 workers- 40% less workers than previous rig designs. Veteran drillers say its a lot better working environment and lot safer. Chief drillers sit in "drill chairs" and adjust the speed and direction of drill pipes using joy sticks and computer screens. It is this kind of technology that countries like Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and India need to develop their off shore oil fields, creaing new opportunities for oil companies such as Chevron, Shell, BP, Exxon and Total. The new technology equiped drilling ships, platforms and LNG processing ships are a way for Shell to reduce costs and improve capital efficiency, the new focus for CEO Van Beurden in 2014-2015....
