Lashkar aPakistan terrorist group which recruits members has 150,000 members in Pakistan and is drawing increasing support, has connections to Pakistan's Intelligence Agency ISI at different levels on a clandestine level, and is capable of another attack. The ISI leadership for its part has not abandoned its goal for freeing Kashmir but simply shelved it for now. Says the Times report by Lyddia Polgreen and Souad Mekhennet, with interviews and classified information from ISI officials and operatives, the capabilities of Lashkar are intact, only "a thin distance" separates the Lashkar from the ISI bridged by military and former intelligence service members, and another attack is possible. This has grim consequences for the American troops in the Afghanistan region and the Pakistan troops fighting the war in the border regions, and for economic development in South Asia. For the first time the consequences of past failed policies in the region are threatening the vital interests of the American and South Asian people, as wars and conflict now seriously threaten much needed infrastructure and economic development in South Asia and economic renewal in North America. And serious solutions and problem solving is sorely needed on the North American side and the South Asian side. The vital interests and future of about 400 million people in North America and 1400 million people in South Asia would otherwise be held hostage to the volatile emotions of 8 million people in Pakistani and Indian parts of Kashmir, in a remote region of the world. ...

Brooks point to the percentage of GDP going to consumption as having gone up from 62% between 1962 and 1980. In 2008 it was 70% of GDP and debt went up from 55 percent of national income to 133%. Financial self restraint and values of earlier generations eroded. He says the slide in economic morality affects red and blue equally, so the cultural politics organized the way it is is obsolete. There has to be a movement to restore economic values cutting across the current lines. Building a producer not a consumer economy, return to financial restraint large and small. And importantly he says, such a movement will have to take on what you might call the lobbyist ethos. The conviction that every group is entitled to every possible appropriation, regardless of the public cost. Such a crusade will he says rearrange the current alliances and embrace policies such as energy taxes. See the Friedman article on a gasoline tax, where he tells those who want to fight the wars against religious extremism such as in Iraq, to not be wimps and take on the opposition to the gasoline tax....

Thre drug companies are placing bets on the vaccine business. Johnson and Johnson paid 302 million euros for 18% of Dutch biotech company Crucell NV, to jointly develop vaccines. Abbott Labs says it will acquire a unit of Belgian conglomerate Solvay SA for 4.5 billion euros in adeal that includes a vaccine business. And Merck obtained the marketing rights for a seasonal flu vaccine from Australia's CSL Ltd. This follows Pfizer's Wyeth acquisition. Low prices, high costs and fear of lawsuits made most drug makers to exit the business in the 1980's and 1990's. Now vaccine sales are growing faster than other prescription drugs and are largely protected from generic competition. And government agencies here in the USA and around the world are reliable buyers of vaccines as they seek to stockpile medicines that could be needed in aflu outbreak. Merck never exit the vaccine business and now makes 8 of 10 vaccines recommended for adults. Flu and other vaccines are especially attractive for entering drug markets in Brazil and China and developing countries. Governments lke the idea of lowcost prevention at $10 adose, and with this new relationships are developed in these countries. And even at price of $10 or $20 a dose they provide asteady stream of revenue.Vaccines are estimated to generate $21.5 billion in revenues by 2012 according to Sanofi-Aventis SA, which is a leading vaccine maker....
