General McChrystal gets the support he is looking for against the Taliban in Afghanistan, as Gates, Obama and Clinton, make the decision to continue backing the Karzai government, even though it is very unpopular and the ground reports suggest that this would be amistake. It was NATO that announced the support because the Obama administration had deep concerns about the Karzai government. The US and the UN representative Kai Eide wanted to see arunoff for the elections but the "assumption" that he would be reelected suggests the Obama administration, the UN representative, and the UK and Canadian foreign ministers in ameeting have decided to continue the war in Afghanistan on Karzai's side.

The conditions of Iraqi industry, mostly state run industries, hobbled by corruption, poor infrastructure, poor roads , sporadic electricity, and bound by bureaucracy and central planning. This makes it hard to compete with cheap imports fromIran, Turkey and other countries. Iraq's chairman of the national investment commission, Sami-al-Araji, says he is after gradual change to an open economy.Currently Iraqi law forbids foreign company participation through owning equity. And $60 million investment deal from an Egyptian consortium for an electirical products factory here fell apart after the global crisis. The US stepped in with agrant to keep it running and its 3400 workers employed and not turning to the insurgency.

Merkel's personal popularity and her calm demeanour will help hold the party and the new coaltion with the Free Democrats together, says political science professor Gerd Langguth of Bonn University in Germany, but her party's poor showing will create problems for her. The Free Democrats increased their share of the vote to 15% from 9.5% and the Christian Democrats went from 35% to 34%. Merkel has not been able to strengthen the base of the Christian Democrats which includes astrong Catholic wing. At the same time the new coalition partner will enable her to pursue policies and reforms more openly.
