NYT's fact check on Apple CEO's letter to the EU Commission. The appeal say legal experts is not as likely to lead to a reversal of the ruling as Tim Cook says it would be, because of the way the EU courts operate based only on looking at the legal aspects of the EU's authority, not the overall case. Public opinion is also shifting rapidly in favor of corporations paying their fair share of taxes, and corporations are lagging in their understanding and grasp of public opinion- the extent to which the middle and working classes have slipped in the last decade of financial crises and shifting of jobs overseas, what Theresa May, the British prime minister has called "burning injustice." Two thirds of Ireland's social services budget and its entire national health service budget is what the $13 billion pays for. During 2009-2013 Ireland suffered a severe crisis with deep cuts in public spending, and rising poverty.

Dangers to the global economy from many left behind by the tech and trade changes of the last 2 decades that have benefitted some sectors and groups and hurt others. Turning to populist political appeals those who feel left behind and suffer the effects of a lack of intergenerational mobility could lead the world into a period of protectionism and nationalist upheaval. This would reverse many of the changes that delivered prosperity for the four decades after World War II.

The appeal of populist politicians using racist slogans and divisive rhetoric to appeal to those left behind by the capitalism, tech changes, trade and globalization of the last 2 decades, has created a new danger to the prosperity and peace achieved in the 4 decades after World War II. Schieritz shows how this needs to be addressed and the changes already taking place.

In an effort to implement president Xi Jinping's policy of reducing the influence of western companies such as IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, Qualcomm in China's core industries, more restrictive policies and efforts to get the companies to share technology were introduced in 2015. Apple was relatively an exception. In April 2016 China's ministry responsible for internet and culture shut down Apple services for books and music. Apart from favoring local companies Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent, this reduces foreign culture's influence in China, a policy favored by the government to maintain what it sees as "positive influence," by local providers.

Samsung Makes Aggressive Play for Emerging Markets
Wall Street Journal 04/08/16
We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
