Weekly MRA Goal Discussion

Dec 27, 2023 MRA Weekly Goal Discussion

This weeks article focus for Goals for the Renewal of America (and UNSDG goals) places focus on Goal 7- Democracy Support Action and Goal 9  Movement for Global Literacy. Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman Supreme Court Justice passed away at age 93. Biden called her "civil and principled, gracious and wise." Exactly the kind of beneficial virtues the country needs most at the present time. Why? Shown here is the Pew Research Center's poll on Public Trust. Only 20% trust Congress and the US government today. Compare this with 70% during the FDR, Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy administration period before the sixties. It declined to 16% during the Reagan administration inspired deregulation which by 2009 led to the deep financial crisis. It was 40% by the 1980's and keeps declining. Sandra O'Connor kept a copy of the US Constitution with her at all times in her purse. She started iCivics when she retired in 2009 to teach young people the value of civic knowledge a task that Lyrarc.com has taken up following the lead of O'Connor for US and the world. See O'Connor on Lincoln's Legacy article below to understand how important was the work of Abraham Lincoln in restoring Public Trust before and during the Civil War. Something like that is needed today.

Goal No. 9- US investment by government, private +foreign is fulfilled by the New York State government working together with Micron and IBM for a $10 billion chip manufacturing complex in New York state. Cost of Living Action is shown by Treasury Secretary Yellen and Federal Reserve Bank chairman Jerome Powell achieving a soft landing for the economy. For Goal No.5  Bringing Jobs and factories to the US- in all of 2023 2.7 millions US jobs were created, according to the Labor Department, and unemployment remains steady at 3.7%.

Washington Post | | 12/19/2023

Sandra Day O'Connor always carried a copy of the US Constitution with her and worked to expand civic knowledge of the younger generation through iCivics from 2009 when she left the US Supreme Court after 25 years service. As she lies at the Supreme Court after her death at age 93, president Biden who was ranking member of the US Judiciary Committee when O'Connor was nominated in 1981, remembers her as "gracious and wise, civil and principled." Biden said: "One needed not agree with all of O'Connor's decisions to recognize that her principles were "deeply held and of the highest order, and that her desire for civility was genuine... She empowered generations of American women in every part of American life."    ...

Pew Research Center - U.S. Politics & Policy | Pew Research Center | 12/15/2023

Trust in government in the US was highest under FDR, Truman, Eisenhower and LBJ, right upto the escalation of the Vietnam War and remained above 70 percent. It changed in the seventies and hit new lows ever since to the 40% level since the 1980's through the Reagan, Bush, Clinton administrations. The 2009 financial crisis caused by banks led to a drop to 16%. It dropped to 20% under Obama and Trump administrations. By 2023 it remains at about 20%. Graphs in Pew Research show how it has changed over time. ...

Washington Post | Marc Thiessen | 12/15/2023

Marc Thiessen in The Washington Post says to halt the problems at the border when last week migrant encounters hit 12,000 a day Democrats need to work with Republicans to get the votes in the Senate and House for needed legislation. This means losing some votes from factions within the Republican and Democratic parties and still getting it passed. It would be good for the country and good for Biden, says Thiessen. He says to get some idea on what the 12,000 figure means even 1000 migrants was a high number that would overwhelm the system in 2019. He cites John Fetterman, Senator from Pennsylvania, who says that honestly this happening at the border is astonishing, essentially seeing Pittsburgh at the border. ...
