The Opioid Crisis, Already Serious, Has Intensified During Coronavirus Pandemic

In the past decade alone overdoses of fentanyl and other drugs have killed half a million Americans. Federal projections show deadly overdoses killing 72,000 people last year. The pandemic has made things worse, The social isolation and stress, and the difficulty meeting help providers is taking its toll and adds to the 188,000 people dead from the coronavirus. This silent crisis that affects Americans and families all across the country from the dangerous flow of these drugs into the U.S. from other countries and from their overuse and abuse is taking about half as many lives as the coronavirus itself, without the effective government response needed at every level to end this crisis.
