German public opinion favors a president with support in the European parliament. Chancellor Merkel has decided to support Juncker because of this, over the objections of UK prime minister Cameron. This is likely to fuel more anti-EU sentiment in the UK about the bureaucracy in Brussels. Ironically one of Germany's strategic objectives is to keep Britain in the EU.
