Bill Marriott tells Adam Bryant about an encounter with President Eisenhower at his father's family farm in 1954 when he still a young man. Eisenhower asked Bill the question about going outdoors on a cold wintry day with his dad and the Secretary of Agriculture- "what do you think we should do." He realized the value of this in the Navy and at Marriott when he found how uncommon was this question in real life as most have already made up their minds and rarely ask people around them this question.

Eisenhower quotes Eric Hoffer in a response to Mr Biggs, a terminally ill veteran's letter to Ike. Even in ademocracy too many people tend to want not to have to think about tremedously complex and difficult questions. And not just ordinary people, even Congressmen and politicians. Healthy skepticism is often missing, and few people wish to look at the difficult questions and problems in any detail and think for themselves, preferring to trust a higher authority.
