How to Score the Presidential Debate

Friedman scores the presidential debates and the candidates for president in the 2010 U.S. elections on how well they put forward a plan to put the U.S. back on the right track. The scoring system he suggests focusses on how well the plan addresses the deficit in education- he points to the 25% dropout rate in the U.S. and younger workers in the middle of the pack in educational skills when compared to other countries. The other points in the scoring system are the deficit, setting aspirational goals to restore U.S. leadership, promoting innovation and startup companies, and rebuilding infrastructure. Much of the stimulus he points out went to help unskilled workers, not enough is being done to improve the education and training of America's young workers to compete in a global economy.

Friedman says the baby boomer generation has failed to do what it should have done for a future generation. He quotes Grece's deputy prime minister, who referring to the credits and loans that were extended to Greece after joining the E.U., "we ate it together," the politicians and the people. What this generation of baby boomers leaves to young people today is a legacy of large debt.

A campaign developed by campaign consultants lacking boldness and clear vision, one developed in test-tube fashion, is how Friedman describes the Obama election campaign. He describes the long period in the second half of 2011 as a crucial period inthe Obama presidency, when Obama lacked the courage to embrace his own presidential commission's Simpson-Bowles plan for deficit reduction and simply vacillated in a back and forth with Republicans. The price may well be the loss of independent and center-right voters.

The experience of Britain and the U.S. in the modern period of the age of enlightenment and the industrial revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries compared to the decline in Asia. Similiar views expressed by Adam Smith in his "Wealth of Nations," documenting the changes in Britain in the period from the feudal to the industrial period that brought progressive change and improvement in the lives of the people. The lessons for today in a period of increasing inequality in the U.S. and China, are self-evident.
