Buick sales are up 60% this year. It has more to do with product quality of the cars, than the brand with which these cars were labeled. The Buick Lacrosse is winning the hearts of a younger demographic because of the styling, and the tech features such as iPod connectors and a 40 gig hard drive on the dashboard. This makes it GM's fastest growing brand in the USA. In the process Buick is leaving behind its old stodgy image and appealing to younger people. The Lacrosse released in 2009 has a sharp sculpted body and is changing how Buicks are viewed. Buick has discontinued its golf related advertising and cut ties with the Buick Open golf tournament. Now Buick is advertised in travel and culinary magazines. The Buick Regal is being advertised at rock concerts and with local bands. Customers are making their assessment on the basis of the value and styling, and not letting the image of old affect them, the shift in advertising only helps. Cars that will be seen at the Frankfurt auto show show the direction the industry is taking. Fuel saving technologies, hybrid engines for cars by BMW and Porsche better know for gas guzzling high performance engines. With environmental consciousness high in Europe the pressures to reduce auto emissions are building up in Germany and the rest of the EU. BMW will show concept car that has the higher ride of a sport utility and the hybrid engine running on gasoline and electricity. BMW is trying to change its image to become more in line with the environmental friendly that the German public requires. Mercedes Benz will show its new fuel saving technology and Prorsche will show a hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV. The other focus in Europe on coming up with smaller cars for sale in Asia and elsewhere, and for light driving in Europe. VW is coming up with a city car concept that cand be sold in Asia and also in Europe, it has a rear engine similiar to the VW Beetle and would come in different body styles that can be built for regional preferences but built off a single platform which is cost efficent to turn out....

The protests in Hong Kong could end up as a failure because of the lack of any leadership in the movement for Hong Kong rights. In the early stage the lack of leadership helped build up mass support. As the movement grew it also had weakness in the form of a lack of a coherent program for negotiations with the central government in Beijing. The risks inherent in internet mass media communication are apparent as it brings out people in large numbers nd amplifies all grievances, but fails to produce tangible or concrete results as time passes and lack of coherent leadership weakens the mass movement or makes it overreach.  The lack of communication between the Hong Kong government and protesters with Carrie Lam Hong Kong's CEO not meeting them also led to a lack of a negotiated way out.  This overreach is what Friedman talks about in the NYT saying that the limited universal suffrage offered by China in 2014, with Beijing crossing off candidates openly critical of it, should have been accepted by Hong Kong protesters in negotiated settlement with some protections. The 1200 electoral body would vote for which candidates should stand for election in the Beijing formula. This was not such a bad thing as it offered limited suffrage where there was none in China, says Friedman. By rejecting that formula the protesters gained little because the "perfect" is not always the best option or a practical option when all the realities are taken into account. This is happening again in 2019 with the protesters and Beijing moving further apart and creating a bigger gap with very little constructive communication between the two sides. The efforts to bring the U.S. into protecting Hong Kongers rights by protestors marching to the U.S. consulate also could be seen as going too far by the rest of the people of mainland China, as the U.S. has its own problems including growing inequalities and confrontation between different socio-economic groups. The gradual shift to more disruptive tactics and confrontation with police led to damage to public structures that affected the image of the protesters. The overall lack of a coherent leadership that could negotiate some form of agreement for the future is now seen as a problem for the protest movement. It could lead to a failure to secure the Hong Kong rights protestors seek, says Friedman in the NYT, creating a story of missed opportunities with missing communication, missing negotiation around a "do-able" agenda that builds on common ground between the opposite parties. ...

Honda is defining safety as a feature it wants to be known for, just as Volvo is known for safety. It has in its history been identified with fuel efficient automobiles, now it is making safety a key to Honda's image as an automobile manufacturer, and emphasizing safety in its ads and marketing. Honda will have this new crash resistant technology ACE for the car frame and body structure on almost its whole lineup of vehicles. This means the body structure will crumple upwards in a crash and the impact will be spread across the whole frame, ensuring the compartment of passengers remains intact. Honda is unique in the way its doing this for smaller cars, giving customers of smaller cars an option that includes safety on the road. It has also invested in crash test facilities, with a large facility at its research center in Ohio.

How the IMF conditionality has changed in the 2009 global economic crisis. The IMF head, Dominique Strauss-Kahn of France, is aware how sensitive nations around the world have become to the word IMF. So much so that it has even suggested removing the word IMF from loans to get takers. The IMF conditons worsened the S. Korean financial crisis in 1998. See link to this. This time Kahn has advocated that the developed countries of Europe and the USA increase stimulus spending to 2% of GDP.And there are fewer calls for cutting spending in developing countries offered help by the IMF. Pakistan was asked to increase interest rates by 3% but actually increased them by 2% to fight inflation. But to get some idea how the IMF is viewed with suspicion and hostility in many countries one has to listen to comments made. The move for Pakistan was so unpopular in 2008 that Mohsin Khan a top IMF official says he met with agroup of generals to get their backing. Some IMF officials insistend on a 10% rate increase. Something like that would have led to riots in Pakistani cities. IMF loaned Pakistan $7.6 billion. When S. Korea said no to the IMF credit line, Lee Hyoung-ryoul, a Korean Finance Ministry official said that S. Koreans tremble and financial markets turn sensitive whenever they hear the word "IMF." This time Brazil, S. Korea and Mexico, were offered condition free credit lines. But it has found no takers from these three conuntries, so badly is the IMF viewed in developing countries. Even though it appears that Kahn, in the small club of western nation's officials and staff that form the governing body of the IMF, is trying to give the IMF a new image, its just so bad and the views of the old timers at the IMF on spending or interest rates so contrary to the needs of people in the developed and developing countries, that a new generation of people in finance and economics will be needed before real change is established. ...

The 4.7 billion euro loss at German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp for the fiscal year ending in Sept. 2012. The loss stems mainly from management's bet on a large project to make steel slabs in Brazil and ship it to a plant in the U.S. state of Alabama for finished product of high-grade sheets. The project suffered delays and by the time the Brazilian plant was running in 2010, the strength of the real Brazil's currency and higher wage costs had affected the economics of the plan. Steel demand also slowed in the U.S. The plants which required an investment of 12 billion euros now have a book value of 3.9 billion euros. Thyssen bet too much on one project and it failed. Three management board members who had oversight over the compliance, steel and building technology areas had their contracts terminated, and a new CEO was appointed in 2011. Heinrich Hiesinger, a manager from Siemens AG is the new CEO. ThyssenKrupp's image has been sullied by reports of price fixing of rail tracks and scandals involving the communications head for foreign railroad contracts. Hiesinger says "until recently there has been an understanding of leadership in which old-boy networks and blind loyalty were often more important than the success of the company." He faces a difficult challenge of changing the corporate culture and developing a new strategy. His plans are to turn ThyssenKrupp into a high-tech engineering business by selling the steel mills in Brazil and Alabama, and the stainless steel division to Finiish company Outokumpu Oyj. This will shrink steel from 41% of sales to 30%. To implement this strategy Hiesinger needs a capital increase. This runs into problems as the Krupps Foundation headed by Berthold Beitz, which controls 25% of the stock, does not want to see its influence diluted. Other problems include the role of Gerhard Cromme, head of the supervisory board, which failed in oversight over the failed project. Cromme is also the head of the supervisory board at Siemens AG. At Siemens he helped a company cleanup after a bribery scandal and brought in new management. He also headed the Cromme Commission on corporate governance code for German business, which makes the current corruption allegations embarrassing for Cromme....
