The first undersea rail tunnel of this kind under Thane Creek for 21 kilometres on the Mumbai side. European Travel Information and Authorization System  ETIAS fee $24. ETIAS for travel to Europe starts late 2026. Visa free countries will still need visitors to get ETIAS a form of travel clearance. This means US, Japanese, Canadian and UK visitors to Europe will need to apply online before entering European countries. The authorization will be valid for 3 years or until the passport expires whatever comes first. Travelers may not stay more than 90 days in a 180 day period. Children under 18 and adults over 70 years will be exempt from the fee. Once one enters personal details the authorization is digital and received in minutes.

Airlines are placing placeholder schedules full of flights 6 to 9 months ahead of travel dates. The 2 months before the travel date the real schedule will be placed. At the time of travel some flights with few passengers will be cancelled. Airlines are also flying directly to travel destinations from smaller cities, new flights are setup for destinations such as Israel because of vaccinations, Reykjavik, and other destinations such as Greece that are opening up for vaccinated people in the US. This is true of mjor toruist destinations and  major cities in Europe. Staying away from the city in a leafy suburb can get you a normally priced room on Booking.com as shown here in the range of $100-$200 and it is a good idea to stay away from the bustle and crowds. Rome's average nightly rate April 19 is $300 a night up about 15% over 2025.  This tells you the first rule in travel in European Union is to choose destinations which are not the big cities, and away from the seasonal rush and crowds. The advice here is to look for residential neighborhoods (less costly and more peaceful), plan 6 months  for peak season  to get a decent price and a better shot at getting a decent hotel in Europe.

Stay in fewer places and at least 3 nights to feel at home in a place, less packing and unpacking that can be tiring. Choose secondary destinations not big name crowded places. Do a few things well that you enjoy and stop there, don't stretch yourself thin. And talk to the locals, don't be shy with strangers, you can make the trip come alive with what you can learn from people and places when we talk to the locals and people traveling like us. It can make the whole trip memorable, the stories they tell us and with whom we can share our own.

Rising fuel prices are altering buying patterns across airlines, autos, food and other businesses says this report in WSJ. With prices at over $5 a gallon the impact is being felt across the US and other economies. Export of oil from the US for arbitrage opportunities and lack of growth in the shale industry with price volatility, is resulting in shortages of supplies and higher prices. About one fifth of the 8.3% inflation increase in April 2022 in US was from oil price increases. Similar patterns are seen in Europe and other countries. Inflation is expected to last through 2023.

Pent up demand for travel after the pandemic lockdowns means travel by car and by airline is increasing at a time of higher inflation and oil prices. Motorists in the US are making more frequent trips to gas stations as they fill up for a specific dollar amount.

The decline in inventory, restraint shown by US oil producers and the speedy recovery in Asia is leading to a rise in oil prices to $64 a barrel. The winter storm in Texas briefly cut about half of US oil production, and will also reduce global oil supplies.

Experts say global oil supplies are exceeded by demand by 2.8 million barrels a day, leading to a rapid fall in inventory stock. After Easter with the vaccination drive in full swing, people are expected to start travel. Oil prices are expected to go up to $75. Others are more cautious expecting US shale producers and OPEC to increase production and travel to go up gradually.

The $2.3 billion pounds (2.6 billion euros) the UK paid to the EU for not collecting legitimate customs duties for imports from China, could finance a UK travel pass like the popular 9 euro travel pass in Germany. That 9 euro pass was a sixth of the cost to travel in Berlin, one way the German government helped people face the cost of living crisis. It cost the German government 2.5 billion euros. One more missed opportunity in Britain by the Tory government to help people with the cost of living crisis. The UK gets hit first with a loss of the customs duties revenue that would have been collected as well as any penalties for fraud from importers. Add to this the $2.3 billion pounds in settlement with the European Union for not collecting legitimate customs duties from imported textiles and shoes into Britain from China. Blunders and missed opportunities to help people  with cost of living crisis is a mark of the Conservative government in Britain. The Guardian reports that the case goes back to 2017 when the EU anti-fraud office said British authorites had allowed criminals to evade customs duties by making false claims about imports of clothes and shoes from China. It says that the EU found over half of all textiles and footwear imported from China were below the lowest acceptable prices.  ...
