By acquiring Vodafone Japan Softbank CEO Son brought competition to the industry and challenged the duopoly of DocoMo and KDD telecom providers. After acquiring Sprint Son is taking a hands on approach to shakeup management at the company, which has lagged behind T-Mobile in building its subscriber base. After years of losses Sprint now faces the prospect of a complete makeover from the old way of doing things. Sprint is based in Overland, Kansas. Son says Sprint is like Japanese lords in feudal Japan who controlled everything in their lands, and said Sprint is a Kansas Daimyo. Masayoshi Son has asked executives to fire all the ad agencies and start over, at one point asking executives if they were stupid. Son has established shadow offices at San Carlos, California to monitor weekly progress at Sprint.

Softbank the epitome or synonym of waste on a huge scale of capital allocation for the last 2 decades in massively distorted capital markets when healthcare, childcare, manufacturing technologies and infrastructure is suffering from lack of funding, is hit with a loss of $23 billion for the second quarter which was one and half times the loss of the first quarter. As the WSJ reports Softbank and Masayoshi Sen was delirious in his own words during the tech booms of the last 20 years and its founder talked about bigger and bigger capital allocation even as productivity of capital declined rapidly. This happened astonishingly with little restraint in capital markets shown by participants even as healthcare in the ten years before the pandemic was not adequately funded, and education, infrastructure, manufacturing technologies were neglected which would have provided better returns on capital and served the interests of the American people and the world in a way that would have been said was well done had this been done. The epitome of massive distortions in the way capital is allocated in capital markets of the last two decades even as healthcare, childcare, manufacturing technologies and infrastructure was starved of captal funding is Masayoshi Sen and Softbank which posted a $23 billion loss in the April-June 2022 quarter. This is one and half times the loss in the first quarter. Heard on the Street in WSJ dismisses Mr. Sen's contrition on these losses as this will continue into the future it says, and is simply the style of these types of extreme speculation funds. It obscures a larger problem in society and in America and Europe of capital markets giving the pass on such wasteful use of capital on huge scale amounting to trillions of dollars and not funding desperately needed healthcare, education, infrastructure, childcare and other needs of the 900 million people in these countries. Even the claims of profits hangs hollow on the necks of these investments, with dubious selection of many projects. Capital returns are insignificant or zero as the WSj says many of Softbanks funds have net zero gains since 2017. Yet extravagant demands for capital are met with extravagant supply where the needs or reasoining are the least credible in today's distorted capital market allocations causing egregious harm to the 900 million people of the US and Europe.   ...

This account in the WSJ shows how Masayoshi Son is making huge bets with money from Saudi, UAE borrowed at 7% interest, and his own and partners money. The first Vision Fund  which raised $100 billion was invested quickly over 2 years in startups in the U.S. with an uncertain future and the WSJ says it is unusual that a fund would pile up debt to invest in companies that are unproven and which cost the Fund billions of dollars a year in interest payments. Many of the people hired are not from venture capital and have backgrounds in speculative Wall Street deals, including Deutsche Bank, according to the WSJ. Critics say money invested in every pet walking or hotel renting website is not going to make healthy returns. Creditor are being paid back with money they lent, with interest at about $2 billion this year, according to this report.  Beyond the question of returns there is the larger question of how capital markets are malfunctioning today. Money badly needed for infrastructure and keeping up with technological developments such as 5G and new technologies, for research and development, and for vital public services in health and education to build strong societies, being diverted to highly speculative deals and dealmaking. ...

Sprint's agreement with Softbank to sell a 70% stake to Softbank for $20.1 billion. Sprint has lagged behind Verizon and At&T in offering Long Term Evolution, or LTE, data service. It is struggling with $21 billion in debt and needs the additional investment to support investment on the next generation technologies. Softbank was working on reducing debt estimated at $13 billion and building its LTE network in Japan. The deal for Sprint Nextel therefore comes as a surprise with the additional debt Softbank is taking on, even though Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank, is known for taking on large deals. Softbank shares declined 17% after the first information came out and have dropped an additional 5%. Sprint shares were up 14%.

A report by a third party panel says Olympus management, internal auditor Hideo Yamada, former vice president Hishashi Mori, and two CEO's Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, and Masatoshi Kishimoto, hid investment losses from Japan's asset bubble in the 1980's. But it did not find links to organized crime, as reported in the media. The report stated: "The core part of the managemet was rotten, and that contaminated other parts around it. The situation was the epitome of the salaryman mentality in a bad sense." By salaryman mentality the report was pointing to Japanese culture of corporate loyalty in a bad situation. Also coming under criticism were the auditing firms of Ernst &Young, and KPMG, for signing off on the financial statements, though the panel acknowledged the difficulties of unraveling the scheme known as tobashi of transferring unprofitable assets.

Softbank, Japan's leading search engine company, has a 34% stake in Alibaba. It also persuaded Alibaba's founder Jack Ma to start e-commerce site Taobao. Softbank will start a service in 2010 which connects Taobao to its Tahoo portal in Japan. Softbank owns a 35% stake in Oak Pacific Interactive which owns the popular social networking and game playing sites RenRen and Kaixin.com. Softbank's strategy in China is to concentrate on e-commerce, local social networking sites and online games. This avoids hitting a wall of government censorship which has hampered progres in China for Google and a number of other sites. Other steps taken by Softbank's founder are to work with respected local partners. Jack Ma sits on Softbank's board and Son sits on Alibaba's board. Softbank sees its mobile business connected to internet growth because mobile users are increasingly using the internet, and Softbank is a mobile carrier.
