"The NHS is on its knees," says Starmer, one more reaon to ban outdoor smoking. Labor in 2007 put the ban on indoor smoking. Sunak had a plan for the Tories to ban smoking. Starmer is now following this to reduce the burden on the NHS and improve public health in the UK. The bill would gradually ban smoking for people born after 2009, an idea proposed by Sunak and the Conservatives. The bill would place new restrictions on outdoor smoking, including outdoor spaces at, and pavements outside, clubs and restaurants, as well as at universities, children’s play areas and small parks. Asked about this during a visit to Paris, Starmer said: “My starting point on this is to remind everybody that over 80,000 people lose their lives every year because of smoking,” he said. “That is a preventable death, it’s a huge burden on the NHS and, of course, it is a burden on the taxpayer. So, yes, we are going to take decisions in this space, more details will be revealed, but this is a preventable series of deaths and we’ve got to take action to reduce the burden on the NHS and the taxpayer.”  The prime minister said-“It is important to get the balance right, but everybody … who uses the NHS will know that it’s on its knees.” Dr Layla McCay, the director of policy at the NHS Confederation, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It is absolutely the health challenge of our time. It’s the leading cause of preventable illness in the UK, so we are heartened to see that progress is being made and that the intention is moving forward to really address one of Britain’s main drivers of health inequalities.” ...

DJT executive orders include one ending birthright citizenship. “It was really meant for children of slaves." DJT is referring to the 14th Amendment that was passed in 1868 by Congress and ratified by 1868 by the states. It came after the Civil War and Emancipation of slaves and was intended without any doubt for one and only one purpose to make slaves citizens of the United States Look at Section 4 of the 14th Amendment which says the United States will not allow any claim for the loss of any slave. "But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void. The only SC decision in US vs Wong Kim that gave citizenship in 1898 to Wong Kim was not intended to go beyond that particular case, it was only meant to make an exception to the Chinese Exclusion Act  of 1882 after which till 1960 (JFK's election) Chinese immigration to the US was stopped, and the same for all Asians. Only immigrant labor allowed in was from Mexico for agriculture till 1960. And in 1954 Operation Wetback wwas conducted by Eisenhower to return about 1 million illegal immigrants to Mexico. DJT says- “It was not meant for everyone to come into our country by airplane, or charging across the borders from all over the world and think they’re going to become citizens.” The millions that came illegally across land border  and the flow of drugs is a new situation that Congress and the Supreme Court are only facing since 2014 a period in which wars in Afghanistan and Iraq took time and resources away from problems at home. ...

In every case the social distancing required by the German government till June 29 is being followed with a sense of good humor and willingness even when only a fraction of the capacity is used.

David Behre is a German paralympic sprinter who won gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 for relay 4 X 100 meters, silver in 100 meters, two bronzes including one in London 2012. Here DW.com looks at his first vocation that of helping other athletes using prosthetics. He brings hope and helps others who are amputees to live a normal life.  It is now 14 years since David Behre was hit by a train at a level crossing in town of Moers in west Germany, while riding his bicycle. The barrier was open. Both legs were amputated. David Behre saw aTV report about South African para runner Oscar Pistorius and he decided the wheel chair was not the end. Four months later he was able to walk again with prosthetics. Five years later he won his first medal at the Paralympic Games in London. Then Rio. Then Tokyo. These days he is busy visiting amputees in clinics and bringing new hope. He says that when he shows them his prosthetics, many amputees cry- "they are tears of joy as they can hope again." He has a little daughter and family, he works in a company that makes prosthetics. David makes this part of his life helping amputees and bringing hope into their lives the core of his life along with the rest.   ...

As the market in larger cities matures, the market in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is where most of the growth is expected in China's market. An expanding middle class is one source of buyers. One forecast is for 51% of Chinese families having disposable income of 106,000 yuan to 229,000 yuan or between $17,000 and $37,000 by 2020, according to McKinsey. There were only 6% in that income range in 2010, showing how skewed the income distribution was, and why the growth of luxury cars has benefitted BMW, Benz and GM. A new generation of younger buyers is another source of growth- Nissan's chief planning officer, Andy Palmer estimates the youth market at 240 million. This group is being called the Transformers generation. A big surge in buying for SUV's has helped companies such as Ford Motor Company. Benz and Ford plan to add new dealerships, with Benz planning dealerships in 40 new cities and opening 100 new stores in 2014. Audi is planning a new certified used car program to keep used car resale values high....

So much talk about age in office. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa is 91 years old and the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. So far he has handled the nomination hearings for Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi decently says this report. A lot of the DJT  immigration agenda and rebuilding the government agencies depends on the Judiciary Committee chairman.  Grassley remains unfazed after winning the 8th term in 2022- "We’ve got freedom of speech in this country,” he said. “But the voters speak, and I won by 13 percent or maybe 12 percent … Isn’t age just a number?” Age just a number, and president Carter made it to 100, president Biden who knows, who knows? Risk is inherent in investing. It just needs to be understood well and grasped. There is a lesson in here that some risk is necessary, depending on one's risk horizon and it does not have to be Argentine bonds. Argentine 100 year bond and US Treasury 30 year bond returns 2017-2025 show quite a surprise.  50% return for 2017-25 on Argentine 100 year bonds vs -10% on US Treasury 30 year bonds. It shows the nature of emerging market risk says the WSJ- political risk. At one point the Argentine bonds showed a 50% loss, yet investors willing to stick through the downturn did better than expected, much better. The recovery did not start till Jan 2024 though, 7 years later. In this case the risk was the pandemic in addition to political risk of Argentine earlier defaults but the recovery took place years after the pandemic declined and with the election of Milieu as president.

For the last 4 quarters Tesla has average profit of about $70 million each quarter yet in May Tesla awarded shares worth $800 million in May to Mr. Elon Musk, CEO, as part of the pay package, says this report in the WSJ.  These stock options need to be expensed as stock based compensation expense. These expenses put Tesla's meager profits based on GAAP in jeopardy says the WSJ. A third quarter net loss of just $226 million would put Tesla in a loss situation for the past 4 quarters. This for a company that is attracting massive amounts of capital. Is this a misallocation of capital by capital markets as structured today when there are pressing needs for infrastructure, health and education from the investment behaviour that prevailed for decades before the pandemic? Are there questions about pay packages that are thousands of times the pay of average manufacturing workers at the same company consistent with the kind of society we once were and now want to build after the pandemic? The average pay at Tesla is between $70,000 to $94,000 a year for workers making the CEO pay package about a thousand times that of the average worker. At the height of the crisis at VW it was about 170 times the average worker in 2015 in Germany. ...
