The minimum wage was raised in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Wage increases are for 28 to 37 cents an hour, and raises the minimum wage in these states to $7.64 to $9.04 an hour, with Washington as the only state with a minimum wage above $9.00. The federal wage level for most workers is $7.25 a hour. Labor Department data show most of the minimum wage workers in these states are women, over 20 and white. The added income is not expected to put these workers above the povety line because of higher inflation.

Shell had a $2.8 billion loss in the 4th quarter 2008 as a result of lower prices of gasoline. Using a current cost of supply basis net profit was $4.79 billion. Shell's CEO says the cost of production and refining have not come down. In fact he says, the price of crude is now what it was 5 years ago, but the costs associated with production and refining are double that of 5 years ago. This puts a squeeze on Shell's profit margins.

48% of British voters see immigration as the most important issue, says Ipsos. And 31% say their local area is housing more than its fair share of asylum seekers growing to 61% of Reform UK voters. Reform UK is now leading party with 34% of the vote to Labour's 25% and Liberals 11%. The report in the WSJ on Augu 28 shows how the Labour government did not live up to it's talk on immigration. It also shows how the Conservatives and Boris Johnson failed by opening up non EU immigration from Asia on the grounds that it would bring in the brightest and yet dropped the basic college degree requirement paradoxically or carelessly. Lobbying from health care home care hugely increased migration for this field under Conservatives and is only now being reversed by Labour. Labour has been too slow and the culture of Britain and Labour has not changed enough to grasp the problem. Their are vested interests in Britain such as universities and home care health care that have influenced the conduct of policy so that migration on non-eu has replaced eu migration after Brexit, but not attracted the most qualified immigrants. The 4% of the British population that entered Britain after Brexit as immigrants, millions arrived and now when Labour is trying to bring this down faces a large number of dependent applications. University students are now bringing in their dependents at rates that have skyrocketed. ...

Tim Kaine of Virginia was pulled in because of the 300,000 federal workers in Virginia that are his constituents for whom he felt a special responsibility and negotiated with Republicans to reverse layoffs, get back pay. This may be a key achievement of Time Kaine that is truly bipartisan. New Yorkers Schumer and Jeffries not having a federal workforce to worry about had no such responsibility and led the effort against a compromise. Masto says she saw long lines in northern Nevada for food pantry that she had not seen since Covid. Maggie Hassan joined King and Shaheen from their part of Maine-New Hampshire, and Masto was able to pull in Jacky Rosen of Nevada. All these senators are not up for reelection next year and Dick Durbin is retiring next year. As an experienced leader of Democrats Durbin might have felt that the Schumer-Jeffries demand on ACA subsidies was only going to hurt Americans who needed help, that 40 days of shutdown was accomplishing little. ...

Ukrainian view on surrendering the 25% of Donbass it does not control for peace deal are shown here in interviews by DW.com in that region near the frontlines. The Kviv Institute of Sociology survey shown here is that 71% of Ukrainians are against giving up the 25% of Donbass. Survey in the Donbass region show 47% opposed, 29% undecided and 24% support giving up tereritory for a peace deal. About 200,000 people mostly pensioners and people who do not want to see their home being looted still live in the Kviv controlled Donbass areas near the frontlines. What about elections? If elections are held and an Ukrainian party including that of Zelensky were to agree to surrendering the Donbass how would the Ukrainian 71% opposed or undecided react. Other attitudes to giving up the rest of Donbass is that there is afeeling even among people who might favor this for a peace deal that Russian forces might continue the war at a later time. Germany's Merz is investing heavily to build up the Bundeswehr and recharge the German economy- the German response is to coordinate with UK, France and Italy and the EU to set up a bloc independent of the US to respond to the peace overtures of the US president with one's of it's own that do not include giving up the Donbass, and to create guarantees that the war ends here, no sporadic starts as in the last 2 decades. ...

GM announces loss for 2008 is $30.9 billion and loss for the fourth qurter is $9.6 billion. The company also said it may not be able to meet its auditors going concern requirements. GM burned through $5.2 billion in cash in the fourth quarter, and $19 billion in 2009. This puts the cumulative net loss to $82 billion since CEO Wagoner began restructuring in 2009. Its obvious now that notwithstanding the media attention it got and what was said by key players, not much was done and the dangers in continuing existing strategy on fuel efficiency, and on too optimistic assumptions about what could happen to car sales, and on acquiescing to union demands on benefits that no company could sustain if economic conditions turned for the worse. All this has played out and in dramatic fashion in the last 6 months. Astonishingly the Board and GM are going down with the ship, the same management and the same board are in place, proving again that capitalism does not necessarily follow rules of pay for performance, except when things are looking good when management skills are not really tested. The banks have proved this in ample measure in recent months....

Areas in which David Cameron shares the same thinking as Barrack Obama are generating green technology jobs, the importance of the voluntary sector and families all doing their bit so that its not just government that will be doing things. "That society should bring about change, not just government." He diagrees with Obama on the Stimulus and believes that the situation in Britain with the government borrowing 10% of national output already makes it difficult to have an extra discretionary stimulus without people losing confidence in then nation's finances. He makes some other points. Britain needs amore balanced economy so that it is not so reliant on financial services. And in Europe as awhole he says its important to deal with the huge dependence on welfare which is a drag on the economies of Europe. This has to be seen in the light of the huge emphasis placed by recent Labor governments on rebuilding the health and human serivces and infrastructure of Britain. In this crisis the social safety net provided by these services may be the reason that asmaller stimulus is needed in Europe. He talks of capitalism with a conscience, where markets are amean not an end to themselves and morality, ethics and asense of values are brough to bear at every turn. ...

The return of women to the workforce is tapping into the US economy's underlying strength, its services sector, even as rising inflation and higher interest rates pose recession risks, says the WSJ. In the competition for a limited pool of workers women are also getting pay raises, which in turn supports increased consumer spending and economic growth. More women in the workforce will ease worker shortages and help cool inflation. Still barriers remain. About 5 million people were not working because of children who are not in childcare or school, according to the US Census Bureau.

Finland makes the decision to join NATO on May 12, 2022. NATO's land. border will increase from 1215 kilometres or 745 miles to 2600 kilometres. Sweden is expected to join NATO in a paradigm shift as it has been neutral for 200 years. Once Finland joins Sweden would be alone in the Baltic if it did not join NATO. Both Finland and Sweden have integrated their defenses and built up defenses at a time when other European states had not invested in the military. It also finds that about 65% of voters who are Independent did not support Mr. Trump in the 2 primaries. Mr. Biden is seen as losing about 10% of Democratic voters. A look at 2020 shows former president Trump has lost support among Independents and skeptical Republicans by 2024 stemming from disapproval of the uncertainty and chaotic nature of the presidential years 2016-2020.

It also responds to China's subsidies to BYD and other EV makers with the US supporting its own EV manufacturers. Senators Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas declare their opposition to the Republican Health Care bill proposed by Senator McConnell. This decision by the two senators makes it impossible to begin debate on the bill. Earlier two other senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky announced their opposition. This means the Republican health care bill has no chance in the Senate even after changes to the bill passed by the House of Representatives. Republicans have a thin majority in the Senate make it difficult to pass legislation. Collins met with residents in Maine and Moran with people in his home state of Kansas, and both senators heard a lot about the negative effects of the Republican bill on people in their state. The bill is seen as hurting people in rural areas, elderly, and not likely to do enough to bring down premiums. Its plan to slash Medicaid spending has drawn strong opposition from all Democrats.

Analysts say the 11.7 billion in cash Chrysler has and the $6 billion in savings generated from merging both companies operations is what GM is interested in not Chrysler's models and plants. GM needs $10.3 billion in fresh cash till next year according to Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson, at which point savings from a union contract and sales boost from models like the Chevy Cruze and Volt extended electric car could kick in. An astonishing day showing the learning curve of DJT, Zelensky, and the European leaders down to the last detail, a communication that was planned to the details, with DJT and Zelensky both reading from carefully prepared remarks, so that everything would go right, no missed chances. DJT also talks to Putin during a pause inthe meeting to brief him on the talks he had with European leaders. Though the media reports this as not expected it was all part of the plan so that DJT could play the role of someone the Russian president could trust, as well as DJT playing the role of someone the Europeans could trust at the same time- not an easy task but done with a sense of seriousness by DJT knowing that the peace depended on winning trust on both sides.

Russian view at SCO Summit-"A fair balance in the security sphere" meaning a fair settlement on the expansion of NATO and EU that may threaten Russia, something Northern Europeans have not settled.  Le Monde covers this side of the Summit at Tianjin, a coastal city near Beijing in northeastern China. Over long periods of European history since 1600 Northern Europe including UK, Sweden, Denmark, France, Poland and Germany have contended with Russia and seen purely from this perspective Russia sees itself as a Northern European power and seeks to protect it's interests. Britain, Sweden and France have for the most part been on the opposite side since 1600. US under a Republican administration, and this is not just DJT, sees the larger interests beyond Europe of Asia and the American continent in addition to Europe, and seeks a diplomatic way out of the war in Europe.

Charlie Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, America's largest conglomerate with a trillion dollars in assets, says Crypto currency should be banned outright. He calls it not a commodity, not a currency, not a security, but a gambling contract with 100% edge on the house. It exists in the US he says only because of a gap in regulation. Munger says China has banned it, so has India with RBI calling for it to be banned. India's central bank RBI governor Shaktikant Das has called i "nothing but gambling" and their perceived value is "nothing but make-believe." He also has called for an outright ban on cryptocurrency saying that modern currency can only be issued by the central bank/government. The question remains why it took so long for Charlie Munger and the leaders in the financial sector in the US  to say this in the WSJ, as it only further damages the interest of ordinary Americans who dabble in these ventures.

Announcing that he would not attend the COP27 Summit in Egypt and then deciding to go shows a lack of commitment, says Mark Landler of Rishi Sunak's decision to finally attend the climate change meeting. Mr. Johnson is remembered for his clear support at COP26 in Glasgow and he will be attending the meeting in Egypt as a private citizen. The demotion of Mr. Alok Sharma by Sunak after his role in organizing the COP26 Summit in Glasgow also does not help. Mr. Ben Wallace, and Mr. Cleverly hold the Defense and Foreign Ministry positions in Sunak's cabinet and supported Mr. Johnson throughout and after Mr. Sunak withdrew his support leading to Mr. Johnson's resignation, says Landler. During a cost of living crisis, there is also a sense that there is not enough commitment from the Tories to meeting the challenges of ordinary families with support, in addition to problems of climate change remaining unaddressed under Mr. Sunak's leadership.
