Mauricio Pochettino played for PSG at one time. The Argentine soccer player is now coach for France's PSG as it takes on Manchester City in the semi finals of the Champions League. Pochettino talks about his years as a player and then a coach in this interview in The Times. He says nervousness as a coach never bothered him as he was always so absorbed by the game and the players, and it could be a bit genetic too.

He was not active as a coach for a year after his departure from Tottenham Hotspur. Today he is seen as an effortless manager, with a natural disposition for the sport and a developer of talent.

There is an emotional attachment because he was close to PSG. "We took the decision because of our heart, not because whether it was the right moment to arrive in Paris or not," he says. "Now after 3 months we leave a very, very tough period."

Kennedy's vision for the New Frontier was never realized following a series of mediocre presidents Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Obama and Trump that wasted resources in far away wars. America is only now recovering Kennedy's vision of the New Frontier of 1960. ...

Luigi Di Maio, 31 years, the head of the Fuve Star Movement Party, that won the most seats in the 2018 Italian election, was elected as leader of the party in September 2017. He was chosen by Beppe Grillo, to give a younger face to the party in upcoming elections. As in France this brings young people into the new parliament. Luigi Di Maio was elected Vice President of the lower house of parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, in 2013 at the age of 26. Maio attended engineering school at the University of Naples, switching later to law, but did not complete the degree studies. During his time there he headed the student council. Before Beppe Grillo started his Five Star Movement in 2009 during the period of Berlusconi and older politicians on the right and the left who were losing confidence, Maio formed the Friends of Beppe Grillo Movement. This report in the DW.com says the pandemic is spreading rapidly in Netherlands, and it has one of the highest mortality rates in Europe. The contentious idea of herd immunity or population immunity was accepted by the Dutch government says this report in DW.com. Very few countries have done this and it is a high risk strategy. Early on in the pandemic some in the UK brought up this idea, but the UK changed course once it was realized how costly this could be in human lives. There is a realization that this Dutch approach may just be an aspiration rather than actual intelligence in what the Dutch call an "intelligent lockdown." Neighboring Belgium, Germany and France have a strict lockdown. The Dutch attitude towards souther European countries such as Italy and Spain in the crisis has also come under criticism. The Dutch government shifted course on assistance to southern European countries supporting an Emergency Fund and admitted its initial attitude lacked empathy and was not consistent with how most European countries have acted. ...

Growth is back in the eurozone. The OECD estimates 2.1% growth in 2017 and 1.9% growth in 2018 for the eurozone countries. Business investment is up significantly- up 5.7% in the first half of 2017. Worldwide business investment in 2016 was at 1.3 trillion euros, up 7.2% from the prior year, according to Eurostat.

New investment for electric vehicles in the auto industry is also up significantly in an industry that provides 10% of all jobs in manufacturing. Yet business investment is only half of what it needs to be- to makeup 5% of GDP- to spur good job creation, says this report in the WSJ. Use of automation is also limiting the number of jobs created. Real wage growth is also lacking.

Chancellor Merkel meets President Trump in a key summit in March 2017. The two leaders have different styles, one flamboyant the other reserved. Chancellor Merkel tells the German media "it is better to talk with each other than about each other." Trump called Merkel's refugee policy "catastrophic," Merkel has said that the Geneva convention requires countries to do this on humanitarian grounds. On trade German's Economy minister Brigitte Zypries says Germany would file a suit on any hike in import duties at the World Trade Organization, that WTO rules restrict import taxes to 2.5% on autos. Germany's BMW plant in the U.S. exports more autos than GM and Ford put together, and Merkel is likely to emphasize large German investment in the U.S.. The heads of BMW and Siemens and other industry executives are accompanying Merkel to the U.S. as trade will be a key topic.

Turkey's president raised this issue in the media about the Belgian officials failure to act on a Turkish request to take into custody a radical arrested in Turkey for trying to enter Syria. The individual was one of two brothers who were suicide bombers in the attack at the Brussels airport and subway in March 2016.

Breakdown of negotiations between Greece and EU finance ministers led by Dijisselbloem of the Netherlands on February 16, 2015. Dijisselbloem says the best way forward is for Greece to take a 6 month extension of the current program, because more time is needed to work out the details. Finance minister Varoufakis of Greece says Greece should not have to make cuts that are clearly recessionary. The bailout ends on Feb. 28. Without an agreement reached Greece loses access to 7.2 billion in funds from the EU, needed to make repayments due in March.

There is renewed pressure from Western European bank's involvement in the economies of Eastern European countries. Austria is most affected with about 50% exposure to Eastern European countries, Italy has about 27% of total bank claims with focus on Poland and Croatia, and the Scandinavian banks are heavily involved in the Baltic countries. The Hungarian forint, the Czech koruna and the Polish zloty are all currencis in steep decline. The IMF has rescue packages for Ukraine and Hungary.

The effort by 90 German universities to provide education for free to the large number of refugees from North Africa and the Middle East that are being given a home in Germany in 2015-2016. In rural areas especially in former East Germany there is still uneasiness about the large number of refugees expected to come in 2015- but students and most people in urban areas are receptive. Yet the challenges remain as the university system is crowded with students and can accomodate only about a fourth of the refugges coming in 2015. The low unemployment rate and need for workers is helpful in absorbing such a large influx of people into the country. Volunteers and the German language classes will help better integrate the refugees into German society. Though there is a small minority of people opposed to immigration, Germany society remains largely open to taking in and helping the refugees, compared to the situation in Sweden and Denmark where recent elections showed parties with anti-immigration stance getting a larger share of the vote and becoming part of the government....
