Ron Wynek was destined to be a farmer, but his wife preferred to stay in town, where he decided to go into the furniture business. The business faced Asian imports with half the cost of manufacturing, and Wynek took the advice of his Congressman not to look for government protection but find new ways to compete. He started importing from Taiwan, moved into furniture products such as bedroom furniture that faced less intense competition in the early days. He invested heavily in logistics, technology and manufacturing efficiency, to come up with a model that could withstand and grow in the face of Asian competition. Ashley is now larger than Lazy Boy and Ethan Allen combined, with sales close to $4 billion, and is expanding with a large store opened in Shanghai, China. ...

France is self sufficient in energy with its reliance on nuclear energy. Germany imports only 6% of its energy from the Hormuz straits which means supplies will be available just that prices will be higher. Germany also can accelerate its renewable energy shift which would pay dividends in the future. Germany also practices conservation of energy better than most countries, similar to Japan, getting the same GNP with lower and lower energy needs. If the US were to do what Germany and Japan have done in energy conservation there would be no need for Hormuz, US could supply Japan with energy. ...

Polls published by IDEA in Hungary that show less than 10% of Hungarians see EU as a concern most are concerned about corruption and governance and public services cost of living. This was done before the election and showed Tisza at 39% and Fidesz at 30% support with 22% undecided at the time who swung in favor of Magyar and Tisza party. This shows that policies will change and Tisza supporters by large majority want change in policies friendly to EU. Yet the election was fought for good governance, good public services and lower cost of living. This means changes will not be too drastic  with Russia, not keen on Russian oil imports but maintaining pragmatic relations with Russia. But it makes a difference as 18 billion euros will be coming to Hungary from EU that were frozen under Orban which can finance better public services. Rule of law can improve and corruption can be reduced in government for Hungarian society to be seen as healthy after a quarter century of one party government by Fidesz party of Orban. ...

Volvo sales worldwide hit 458,000 in 2007 and nowhere near the 650,000 the company set as a target when it bought Volvo in 1999 for $6.45 billion. The dollar has gone from being on par with the euro to $1.50 per euro in the last couple of years. The Volvo cars are made in Sweden and Belgium so this has hurt sales.In North America Volvo sales dropped from 130,000 to 90,000 in 2007. Mismanagement of the rail network and lax oversight by the Greek government leads to a train disaster.Trains on Athens Thessaloniki route are on manual mode signalling. This leads to the collision of a freight train with a passenger train which was mistakenly put on the same rail line by a station master. Many of the 342 train passengers were students returning home. Automatic signalling has not been installed in Greece for Athens to Thessaloniki even though equipment was brought in for the 2004 Olympics, and concerns were raised with the government about the risks, say trade unionists in this report in The Times.

Greg Ip's 2026 warning about Stablecoins citing 1837-1863 privately issued bank notes fragmented fraud prone and outside the official banking system regulation will be remembered years from now when this crypto (anything but stable in the true sense of the word)  leads to a fianncial crisis. Stablecoins crypto currency that is similar to private banknotes issued between 1837 and 1863 with banks issuing their own currency- fraud widespread even with state laws like todays Genius Act. There were many bank failures and financial crises in that period. The state laws in the 1840's required the banknotes to be collateralized but fraud inevitably creeps in as it might with stablecoins.  Leading to financial crises as private capital shrinks and affects public capital that are US Federal Reserve bank notes we use as dollar bills. Today 84% of illicit activity is conducted using these crypto currencies and only 1% used for transactions. Proponents ( who stand to benefit in some way) call it a new efficient way of transactions. But the facts dont lie. Not only are stable coins used for only 1% of transactions, and illicit activity conducted through crypto coins, but also most of this currency is held overseas not in the US where it is less regulated. Federal Reserve has always questioned the value of crypto currency. Here is what Bank of International Settlements (international institution similar to Federal Reserve) has to say-“Stablecoins attempt to import credibility from public money while operating outside the established settlement system.” -Pablo Hernández de Cos, general manager of the Bank for International Settlements Holding Treasury bills as collateral does not remove the basic problem in is design. Issuers are for profit. The Federal Reserve is not for profit. And the Federal Reserve is part of a whole regulatory structure, Stable . laws have loopholes, and coins lack that kind of regulatory structure , making stablecoins prone to failure, an accident waiting to happen. Tether has $190 billion and Circle has 76 billion for about $300 billion in private capital tied up in this undertaking and posing risks to the Us and world financial system. ...

Obama deal simply pushed back till 2030 Iran's development of nuclear weapons but even that was not achieved as Iran quickly moved to nuclear weapons capabilities by 2026. The basic problem and it does not go away with wishful thinking as the Obama administration had done or not taking responsibility as the EU, China have done. The basic problem is that Iran wants a nuclear weapon. When it seeks the elimination of the Jewish state, and a Shia state that competes with the Arab states this become a problem not just for Israel but for the entire Middle East and for western civilization that the Obama administration never was able to recognize and accept. After the experience of the 1930-1945 period in Germany a traumatic period for western civilization itself-  the German nation and Europe, the US, western civilization itself is committed to a safe society and nation for the Jewish people. This includes India's 1.4 billion people and in many ways China and Russia. Which also recognizes the need for the Arab nations to live in peaceful coexistence with Israel, Christian minorities in Arab countries and with Iran, Palestinian people to be protected, and respected, as well as peaceful co-existence between the urban areas of Iran with the influence since 1800 of Russia, France and Britain and the rural religious areas of Iran that form the core of the IRGC. This is the basic problem- EU, US see a civilization issue and would never allow a nuclear weapon. Arab states are also against a rival religious Shia sectarian IRGC run Middle East, and the Iranian state is itself divided between its modern one in the major cities that do not see a nuclear weapon as essential and the rural one of the IRGC in the rural areas and the countryside that seeks a nuclear weapon. It is this situation the US, not just DJT or Republicans face today, it is one that all Americans, Europe, India, China, Japan and Russia, which have modernized and adopted western civilization's ideas of the Renaissance and Enlightenment as their own have to face up to. US Canada relations in a downward spiral after Carney's words about "economic coercion" and China at Davos. In this case it has incensed Luttnick and Bessent. Bessent has called for US to have relations with Alberta. The Liberal Party had run into problems with its attitude towards the US in the western hemisphere under Trudeau. Carney was supposed to fix this but Canada under Carney has sought to stoke Canadian identity as a way to win elections, when throughout  most of its history Canada and particularly after Dominion status has linked its identity to the US. In fact British constitutional expert Ivor Jennings has pointed out that Canada's trade patterns within Canada are an aberration as it would normally trade with its neighbors north to south (Quebec/Ontario with New England) not east to west  (Ontario with Alberta) as it has done when Canada became a separate state in North America. As Carney and DJT engage in tit for tat it remains unlikely that the USMCA will be negotiated and renewed, creating new uncertainty for the Canadian economy that Carney was expected to address with immigration, housing and other problems left behind by Trudeau's Liberals. ...

US actions to conduct investigations on 18 countries under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 - March 12 2026 after the Supreme Court asks DJT to use another law for tariffs. A key focus of the investigation is to show how industrial overcapacity is deliberately built through subsidies to push product into US markets and destroy American competition. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said March 11- "Our view is that key trading partners have developed production capacity that is really untethered from the market incentives of domestic and global demand." Another focus is on the used of forced or underpaid labor working in substandard working conditions and excessive hours.
