Chancellor Scholz has a fall while running in Potsdam. The German chancellor's office puts out this picture of Scholz so that people can get used to how he would look for the next couple of days. Scholz has taken up rowing at the age of 50 and he says one of his regrets is that he had not done so earlier. He heads a younger more fitness and health oriented government than the one before him, and one that has put first and foremost the idea of dignity of the German worker and his family, an idea he shares with president Biden in the US for the American worker and family.

President Biden has asked for $18 billion for child care stabilization, the children's infrastructure of today. Republican controlled Congress is not responding. Nationwide 16000 childcare providers closed their doors across 37 states in 15 months of 2020 through March 2021. Childcare givers in the US make less than parking attendants, says this story in The Washington Post. Federal grants provided help in Wisconsin and other states, but this money dried up and more childcare centers have closed. This is the soft infrastructure that America needs and is so crucial- for its children and for mothers and fathers. The losses reverberate through local economies. And it disrupts parents, especially mothers ability to work.

Only Buenos Aires province and two other provinces vote in favor of Sergio Massa, the Peronist candidate. Milei wins by 56% to Massa's 46%. La Nacion points out that most voters are angry at the political and economic reality, and are not voting for an ideology. In April 2020 one US dollar was worth 80 pesos, in 2023 it is 1000 pesos. Asked about his meeting with President Joe Biden Starmer says he was in good form and mentally agile, and covering topics in pace. The meeting lasted for an hour. Here is what Starmer said about Biden- “No, we had a really good bilateral yesterday. Ohio senator J.D. Vance is chosen by Trump as his running mate. He came to know Trump Jr. in 2021 and the two are shown to be close. He was elected Ohio Senator with Trump's endorsement. His thinking and style is similar to the former president which may have led to his choice over Marco Rubio of Florida and Borghum of North Dakota. How well known is he in Michigan or Wisconsin, and how much support can he draw in those two states with his energy on working class issues when Michigan and Wisconsin have Democratic governors who are strong on working class issues and union support, remains to be seen.

The former Governor was Jennifer Granholm who is now in the cabinet of president Biden as Secretary of Energy.  Harris has moved up by 5 percentage points in Michigan and has the support of people across all communities in the state. Even though Michigan and Wisconsin are shown as states similar to Kansas and Iowa, they have in Michigan a strong manufacturing worker base, and in Wisconsin the influence of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, that make the state very different and forward looking in its thinking.

French premier Barnier meets Marie Le Pen of National Rally. National Rally says it will veto any policies that reduce the purchasing power of the French people. Barnier lays out austerity policies and cuts in spending. National Rally had 8 seats, after this year's election it has 125 seats in the National Assembly. A new generation of younger leaders takes over at the European Central Bank under Mario Draghi. Belgian economist Peter Praet succeeds Peter Stark of Germany in the Economics Department. Portugal's Vitor Constancio is vice president. Jorg Asmussen, 45, from Germany is on the ECB executive board, so is Benoit Coeure, 42, from France, and Klaas Knot, 44, from the Netherlands. Asmussen will head the ECB's International Division. Jens Weidmann,43, is the new head of the Bundesbank. The result experts say could be a reorientation of the ECB's outlook away from the rigid anti-inflation stance of Draghi's predecessor, Claude Trichet, and a willingness to try new approaches to help Europe tackle this recession.

Lower oil prices in 2015 make it possible for president Joko Widodo of Indonesia to remove costly fuel subsidies in Jan. 2015. With the steep decline in oil prices this made it possible to lower fuel prices at the pump at the same time. The costly fuel subsidies cost Indonesia more than money spent on education and healthcare. This frees up money for other programs. In November the Widodo government fulfilled one of its election promises by sending out national "smart cards" to over 15 million poor Indonesian families, which gives them free health insurance and education related expenses for children for upto 12 years of school. There are similarities in the Republican and Democratic party platforms in 2016. One area of agreement is in the reinstatement of Glass Steagall Act. That legislation made in the Depression period to separate commercial banking from investment banking was changed  when president Clinton made changes in a deal with Senators Phil Gramm and Jim Leach in 1999. The too big to fail problems of banks and the problems of investment banks during the 2008 financial crisis are attributed to the lack of Glass Steagall protections for financial stability and safety. The result is that in the post 2016 environment banks can expect a tougher regulatory environment. Infrastructure development in Indonesia neglected by previous administrations gets a boost under President Jokowi. Since 2014 Jokowi has taken advantage of a fall in oil prices to cap the fuel subsidy given by the government.  This has allowed more money to go into infrastructure projects. In 2014 $15 billion was allocated to infrastructure, increasing by 2017 to $30 billion.  Jokowi has plans for 222 national strategic projects , including roads, railways, bridges, power stations. Of this 127 are under construction, 20 completed. Under president Suharto from 1968 to 1998 for 3 decades infrastructure was neglected. One example is the situation in Jakarta where only 4% of the residents are connected to the sewer system. Most of the investment is being made (80%) by the government. Much remains to be done in this densely populated country with many islands and poor roads. A China supported plan to connect Jakarta with Bandung by high speed rail remains held up for 2 years with difficulties in moving people in Java's densely populated areas. ...

President Trump agreed to a reopening of the government for 3 weeks, till a compromise could be worked out between Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate. He did not call it a concession but as a way to help 800,000 federal workers who have not received paychecks for 35 days. The president says if the situation is not resolved by Feb 15 there could be another shutdown on the issue of the border wall.

This report says in the month of negotiations both sides have seen that a border wall from end to end  is not needed but that sensors and other devices could also be used to monitor the border. In the impasse in Congress not all Republicans agreed with Mr. Trump leading to the decision by Mr. Trump to take a pause to rethink this issue for a compromise. In recent days air traffic controllers called in sick causing delays, and criticism from federal agencies including the FBI increased creating pressure for a resolution of the dispute.

Tokyo Stock Exchange president, Akira Kiyota, says the TSE is hoping for 70 IPO's in 2013 if all goes well. The TSE and the Osaka Securities Exchange merged in Jan 2013, forming the Tokyo Exchange Group, the third largest exchange in market capitalization. TSE president is from Daiwa Securities and the OSE president is from Nomura Securities. The TSE hope to attract more overseas companies to list, developing into a market that is open 24 hours. After the surge in illegal migration, concerns about crime, concerns about integrating newcomers, cost and strain on social and public services, homelessness in cities, there is a sense that the pause will be a good thing to give the US an opportunity to reevaluate how it manages entry and integration of newcomers. Theodore Roosevelt's remarks in 1904 Message to Congress come to mind when he said about citizenship in the US- "The citizenship of this country should not be debased. It is vital that we kep high the standard of living of our wage workers, and therefore we should not admit masses of men whose standards of living, customs and habits are such that they tend to lower the level of the American wage worker. Above all we should not admit any man of an unworthy type, any man of whom we can say that he will be a bad citizen, or that his children will detract from instead of adding to the sum of the good citizenship of this country." This is not something new. Operation Wetback was conducted by no less than president Dwight Eisenhower in 1954 after the surge in illegal migration during the Truman administration during WW II. There was a similar sense then that the administration had taken up removal of migrants seriously and there were situations where illegal  migrants were loaded onto trucks, yet there was also a sense that there were problems with illegal migration surge that needed to be fixed including homelessness, strain on services, safety on the streets, lack of integration in culture and language. A pause means less population growth with declining population growth in the US. The natural population growth from births/deaths was 1.9 million in 2000, down to 1.1 million in 2017 and in 2025 was 519,000. At some point it will be declining, yet a pause is needed to get the citizenship education, the integration, the economic participation, the cultural side, strain on public services, to get this right. Another facet of this is its political context but all sides should think about the Nation and not politicize the issue. Outmigration to southern states and mountain states from California was 230,00, from New York 137,000, from 3 states, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts about 30,000-40,000 in 2025. As a result the southern and mountain states mostly Republican may add 6-8 Congressional seats by 2028 or 2030.   ...

Two, we support safe and unimpeded maritime commerce. Three, we demand scrupulous respect for international law. Fourth, we are against the weaponisation of market shares and resources. And five, we believe in the value of trusted partnerships and resilient supply chains to de-risk the global economy. Rubio met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.  An interim agreement on trade is being prepared so that a final agreement on trade and investment can be signed. On energy India is keen on getting energy supplies from the US, - “We spent some time today discussing energy issues, and again, you’re all aware that our government’s fundamental responsibility is to address the needs of 1.4 billion people. Ensuring the accessibility and affordability of energy for them is our prime objective. Secretary and I therefore welcome the expansion in our energy trade in recent months.
