Japan's military budget will become the third largest after the US and China and take on offensive capabilities, under the new plan of prime minister Kishida. More than half of Japanese now support Japan taking on this role in defense against China and to ensure an open Indo-Pacific. The military buildup calls for $320 billion in spending over 5 years to deter China, and includes missile deployment. The national security paper released in Dec 2023 says- "The strategic challenge posed by China is the biggest Japan has ever faced." To do this Japan's foreign and defense ministers met with their counterparts in the US this week, ahead of a meeting in the US between Kishida and US president Biden.

Qualcomm's acquisition of Netherlands based chipmaker NXP for $39 billion using cash overseas is part of its diversification effort. Autos make up about 41% of NXP business, and is an effort to position Qualcomm to benefit from the high tech automobile, as smartphone business slows. After the acquisition mobile phones will make up 48% of revenues instead of 61% before the acquisition. Share price of Qualcomm was up 12% with this deal at a 34% premium on NXP's share price.

US Iran Memorandum of Understanding signed by DJT and Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian, May 17 2026, with Pakistan as mediator. Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Qatar tried to bring the two sides together within Iran the RGC Revolutionary Guard Corps military and the president elected in 2024 (to tackle cost of living and other economic issues). and narrow their differences with the US. A key factor was China and the US president called China's actions "fantastic" in achieving the signed agreement to work out the details within 60-90 days of talks. Without China's help in imports and other assistance Iran's economy would be hard to sustain. China's own interests are best served by maintaining peace in the region as it continues to develop and modernize its economy. Russia also supported the agreement. Another contributor was India by setting an example for modernization and economic development as the true pathway for the people of West Asia, by bringing UAE, Egypt and other Arab nations in North Africa such as Morocco together in the direction of economic development and showing that cooperation in the region including with Israel is the best way forward. From the perspective of long term future of the region the presence of Modi and India at the G-7 meeting next to Macron and DJT shows there is now a G-8, with India joining Japan as two key Asian nations in the G-8. In this way the administration has achieved something that was never possible in either the old G-8 (that included Russia) under previous administrations after 2000. DJT's meeting with Putin in Alaska, and his visit to Beijing for discussions with Xi Jinping in 2025 and 2026, achieved the G-8 setting with India plus keeping China and Russia fully engaged in separate one on one arranged talks. This is a rare feat achieved in 2026 for the US, China, India and Russia, EU, Germany, that has never been done before to the lasting credit of the leaders DJT, president Xi, prime minister Modi, president Putin, and chancellor Merz- to their patience even in times of disagreement, their efforts to persevere when times were rough, and their foresight and wisdom in seeking agreement around what they shared in common.  ...

DW. com looks at the controversial effort of privage equity firms Blackstone and Carlyle to buy stakes in Bundesliga soccer clubs. Approval of 24 of 36 clubs sets out a plan to attract 1 billion euros of funding for digitalization, internationalization, in return for an 8% share of TV rights revenues for a period of 20 years. Experts say any effort to take international preference for the Premier League will be difficult. There is also the 50+1 rule in Germany where the ownership stays with the clubs not investors, so that the ticket prices are affordable for the club fans and the clubs belong to the fan base. For the fans and locals the situation is better without private equity.

With inflation up, cost of living increase, the $15 per hour wage in high cost of living states such as California and New York does not go very far in tackling cost of living in 2026. Astoundingly 20 states many in the SOuth still follow the $7.25 per hour federal minimum wage that has not changed since 2009. Axios shows the minimum wage by state. In Michigan workers in youth age earn 85% of the minimum wage of $12.80 and hour. As workers lost leverage with the decline of trade unions since the 1990's administrations of Clinton, Bush, Obama, the situation is a difficult one for lower wage workers in many states. The lower wages in retail and hospitality industries also creates downward pressure on all wages which have not kept up till recently in auto and other manufacturing industries. Outshoring increased pressures over the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations and as Democrats failed to do much about outshoring, it took a Republican DJT and Democrat Biden who followed to reverse the trend and create a push for higher wages. This also has failed as inflation surged during 2022-2023 and outshoring created new problems in sourcing parts from overseas in autos and other industries. The middle class is also not much better off and engineers making $90,000 a year are also living from paycheck to paycheck, with less access to housing that has gone up in price and become less affordable. This cost of living surge and the open borders migration pressure on public services led to DJT's reelection in 2025. ...

Spain's finance minister, Luis de Guindos, announced a two year plan in which Spanish banks are required to set aside 50 billion euros for losses on bad real estate and other loans. This is part of the effort to restore the flow of credit in the economy. He told a news conference: "At the moment credit is falling by around 5% or 10%." Banks have been slow in Spain to get rid of bad assets and proceed with a bank cleanup.The provisioning for losses required under the plan is by type of asset- for undeveloped land this will be raised to 80% of value from the 31% used currently, for new homes this goes to 35% from 25% used currently. The idea is to get banks to sell these properties at today's prices and give Spaniards an opportunity to buy these homes as opposed to letting this remain on the bank's books. Banks that merge will be given one year, other banks will be required to do this in one year. The cleanup will make it easier for Spanish banks to obtain financing in international markets, and in turn improve the flow of credit in the Spanish economy. ...

Medvedev says he fully realizes how much has yet to be done, and Putin says it is extremely important for everyone together to continue the course that has already been taken and has justified itself. And after these words and more the new President is sworn in in Russia. Medvedev says that he will be working hard to improve living standards, education and medical care, and modernizing Russia's narrow economy. Words like to continue the course which justified itself and fully realizing how much has yet to be done have a lot of meaning. Consider the situation in Russia in the last Yeltsin years, disheartened Russian people, poverty, shortening life spans and daily existence difficult for young, average person on the street, pensioner and old people alike. And still Russia has a narrow economy based on growing price of commodities and needs to develop a balanced economy, and the living standards are still only catching up in the rural areas some of which are only now getting electricity.

Clarendon is a 15 minute Neighborhood, a neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia just a few Metro stops from downtown Washington DC. One can walk to where ever one needs to go within 15 minutes. This writer suggests that people will not move to such neighborhoods till more of them are built and the price comes down. The Italian government is making changes that would increase competition, provide funds for infrastructure and reduce red tape. Mario Monti, the Ialian prime minister, told a news conference: "Italy's economy has for decades been hindered in its economic and social growth by three big problems: insufficent competition, inadequate infrastructure and too much red tape." There are fears that the $40 billion in tax increases and spending cuts set in December 2011 to cut the deficit would lead to a sharp contraction in the economy. The IMF predicts a 2.2% decline in GDP for 2012, the Bank of Italy's estimate is 1.5%. Changes planned would permit gas stations to choose providers, improve the legal system, add 5,000 pharmacy licenses, and add 500 notaries. Industry minister Passera says the cabinet approved 5.5 billion euros for infrastructure projects.

Johnson pledges to seize the opportunity coming from the "extraordinary spirit" with which the British people had faced the corona virus pandemic. He sees abandoned factories and other signs of the impact of sanctions particularly on small businesses. Iran's economy has not rebounded from the sanctions period in the way it was expected. Lower oil prices have had an impact. Signs of decay and the effect of sanctions on people's lives can be seen, including the isolation from the outside world. It reminds one of a road trip across Cuba following the lifting of sanctions recently.

The NHS Nightingale hospital was built in 9 days by converting the ExCel convention center in east London. This is the largest hospital of this kind ever built with 4000 beds. Prince Charles opening it by video link from his home in Scotland said it was " a spectacular and almost unbelievable feat of work." The hospital is named after the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale. The British government drafted hundreds of army engineers to help contractors build the hospital in record time. It will need 16,000 staff and hundreds of volunteers.

It appears that P&G and Unilever have caught on to what may be one of the biggest developments in consumer products as the global economy incorporates hundreds of millions of small budget buyers in developing countries from Mexico to India. Just look at the figures here- these high frequency stores like the one in Leon, Mexico mentioned here, bring in per shopper 23 pesos or about $2, with annual sales of about $16 billion. As their incomes increase they could be buyers of the same brands they are accustomed to and move upscale in the years ahead. Another article talked abot Walmart's success in Mexico's urban areas. It appears that there are two trends one of the high frequency stores in the rural areas and the smaller villages and towns, and the other of large stores in the growing urban areas with buyers from the newly affluent urban classes. What is interesting is the close attention that is required to sell to high frequency stores and the sense of respect that needs to be shown for the economy, price and budget, buying habits to tailor products for their special needs. As for example: the one time use Head and Shoulders shampoo that costs 2 pesos, the feminine hygiene pad product with aloe that can be used longer with extra absorbent cotton, the Downy Single Rinse to conserve water usage. All the time the attention to a quality product that delivers and gains sales by word of mouth....

Canada's 2015 budget provides an extension till 2025 for a tax break to write off capital investment at an accelerated pace that was first introduced in 2007. US president Biden proposes to reduce the US deficit by $2 trillion by increasing taxes on American households worth more than $100 million that would apply to their earned income, and their unrealized gains on liquid assets like stocks. Biden also plans quadrupling the tax on stock buybacks by companies, a tax approved in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2021. The deficit in 2023 will be about $1.4 trillion and rise to about $2 trillion, so that Biden's plan is to practically eliminate the  large deficit if the Republicans come on board. Republicans prefer cuts in spending. US companies have engaged in a dramatic increase in stock buybacks in recent years leading to calls for increasing the tax on stock buybacks. Biden says even high income households will not see an increase in their taxes, only the wealthiest households with over $100 million who have benefited vastly through the Reagan type policies of the last two decades. These households with over $100 million in assets will not be affected in the same way as students, workers, and middle income households are affected in shouldering a large part of the burden of these Reagan type policies that did not adequately fund education, healthcare, and manufacturing in communities across America. This was a period when Democrats in Congress awed by Reagan type policies failed to vigorously oppose policy that increased the US deficit and burden on households for health costs by not allowing Medicare to negotiate prices with pharmaceutical companies. A senior AARP official says that when we talk about the Biden Inflation Reduction Act of 2021 the key component is the Medicare price negotiation with companies that is now law. Why Republicans and Democrats before Mr. Biden allowed such a gross distortion for two decades since 2001 that burdened ordinary  working Americans while neglecting American manufacturing, till Mr. Biden assumed the presidency, says much about the policies of the last two decades and how it has affected ordinary working families. Shriveling factory towns and creating much distress in these communities with these distortions that are a legacy of Reagan type laissez faire policies that government should do little. The result of these policies is that manufacturing is concentrated in only one country for the whole supply chain something that would never have happened with a thoughtful policy planning process. India and Vietnam are only today seen as alternatives for the supply chain in 2023 when policies were in place in these countries since 2014 for the supply chain to be distributed in a way that would be a win-win situation for all countries, avoiding the national security threats of today with overconcentration of manufacturing in China. This has not benefited China or the US because of the rancor and tension it has created. It was the fall of the Berlin Wall that created some of this awe for Reagan, when looking at it objectively it was nothing more than a course correction in Europe after the Hungarian revolution suppressed in 1956, Czech in 1968. It had little to do with what policies the US should pursue for workers and families, just as the war in Ukraine today remains another course correction in a different direction in Europe, and does not affect domestic policy in the US to build a better society for workers and families that Mr. Biden is doing. ...

Five Star party's coalition government with Mr. Salvini's Northern League was formed after elections in 2018. It collapsed after Mr. Salvini decided to breakup the coalition government in the hope of taking advantage of increasing popularity in the polls. The Five Star Movement was founded in protest against the conventional politics in Italy, but decided to join the establishment Democratic Party after Mr. Salvini's moves to call fresh elections.
