That is the joke as Trump is really getting ripped off. Ip says bacon prices are up 18% since 2020 when Biden took office. Trump says at rallies grocery prices are up 70%, Ip says fact correction -up 21% since January 2021 not 70%. Trump says gas prices are $5.00 a gallon. Fact correction- gas prices are $3.75 a gallon and falling, says Ip. Trump wildly exaggerates. Trump says he will cut energy and electricity prices by 50% in 12-18 months. His answer "Drill Baby Drill." Experts cited by Greg Ip say even if new offshore and onshore leases are given, increase in supply is marginal and years away. Gas prices are determined by the world price determined by OPEC and Russia, says Ip.  Trump will increase inflation says this report because of tariffs he plans of 60% on imports from China and 10% from other places. That would increase inflation by 1.4 to 1.7% say analysts. Greg Ip of WSJ offers more clues. Inflation linked bonds see inflation dropping to 2.2% in 2025 instead of 2.6% predicted earlier. The question whether the source of the coronavirus that led to deaths of more than 1 million Americans is a lab leak at a Wuhan lab in China is still being checked. The Energy Department says that with  "low confidence" it emerged from a lab leak at Wuhan, China. Earlier in 2021 the FBI stated that it was the result of a lab leak not a natural transmission. The Energy Department runs many labs doing research in the field. Petroleum exports supported the allied war effort in two world wars says this report in the WSJ. Europe is shunning Russian oil after its invasion of Ukraine.

US president Biden signs legislation that gives rail workers in the US paid sick leave and 24% higher pay, $5000 bonuses in series of annual payments, and 7 days paid sick leave. The death of a rail worker because of paid sick leave and the stagnant wages of rail workers led Congress to act. Workers now feel they are being heard in the Biden presidency with Democrats control of the Senate and close contest for the House of Representatives. A rail strike would have hurt other working families said president Biden, and Congress acted in a timely manner to prevent losses to the economy of an estimated $2 billion a day from a rail strike.

Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman meets IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss impact of the geopolitical situation on world growth especially oil prices. Sitharaman said India was pursuing a policy of strong federal spending with capital expenditures increasing by 35% for fiscal 2022-23 to continue a public investment led recovery, raising capital expenditures from 5.5 lakh crore rupees to 7.5 lakh crore rupees. Indian GDP growth is now expected at 8-8.5%, the highest of large economies. Sitharaman also met with Indonesian finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati on the sidelines of G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting and discussed the current global situation.

President Richard Nixon was named by a grand jury in 1974 but was never charged with a crime says WSJ. By the time he left office Nixon's reputation had suffered severe damage. NYT reports that this is different with Mr. Trump who seeks the nomination of the Republican party in 2024, raising a whole new set of issues of what is and is not appropriate behaviour for the office of the president of the US or for that matter any high office in the United States of America. Ultimately new standards will be set and the past few years make be looked back on as an anomaly in the history of the US.

WSJ looks at what documents were leaked from classified documents of the Department of Defense, and what is the possible impact on the war in Ukraine.Some of the documents show Ukraine rapidly losing aircover defenses as it runs out of antiaircraft missiles. A map dated Feb 28 shows that most of Ukraine's critical infrastructure outside the Kiev region and two areas in the southwestern region would have no aircover by mid April or first week of May because of this depletion of stock of antiaircraft missiles. The FBI and Justice department launched the investigation into the leak of April 7 at the US Defense Department.

India is a frugal innovator producing satellites for space at a fraction of the cost. NASA sent Maven, a probe to Mars for $671 million, it cost India $74 million to send an orbiter to Mars. Yet India as one of the few space exploring nations has only 3% of the market. Invest India, India's investment promotion agency says this will increase to 10% by 2030. In March India's NewIndia state owned space agency sent three dozen space satellites for OneWeb into space after launches by Russia were stopped. In 2023 the US is the largest by far in the space sector economy. China and Russia are also in this space.

Everyone over 50 years is to be given the vaccine in just a few months of 2021 by the NHS. A massive logistics and training effort is underway. The government changed the law to let student doctors, physiotherapists, and dental workers to give the vaccine. Retired doctors and nurses are called in. Britain has a war effort to counter antivaccine propaganda unlike other countries such as France and Germany. Compare that 79% of Britons are seeking the vaccine, 54% in France and 64% in the U.S. showing that the UK is doing a much better job. Vaccination starts next week for over 80 year old people. The world is watching.

Carlos Alcaraz finishes a five set 4 hours at the US Open semifinals, after a quarter finals game that lasted 5 hours all the way to the early hours of the morning at 5 am. The youngster from Spain meets another new face at the US Open Casper Ruud of Norway. The old game had disappeared with very few net points and fewer lob shots. Ruud and Alcaraz are taking the game back to how it was played by the likes of Laver and Nastase in the 1960's and 1970's when a whole mix of shots and agility at the net was always part of the game.

Wesley Morris provides a look at Sidney Poitier, who changed attitudes towards race in America and Europe, from a New Yorker's perspective. He says Poitier did so much to create the more open cultural attitudes in the US and Europe, and South Africa that we find today, and did this with humility and grace. He puts Poitier's contribution in changing racial attitudes in the longer perspective in America with Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King. In a larger sense these attitudes also led to changes in attitude towards people from Asia and other countries, that started with Mohandas Gandhi and his efforts against segregation in South Africa in 1900.

Ohio senator J.D. Vance is chosen by Trump as his running mate. He came to know Trump Jr. in 2021 and the two are shown to be close. He was elected Ohio Senator with Trump's endorsement. His thinking and style is similar to the former president which may have led to his choice over Marco Rubio of Florida and Borghum of North Dakota. How well known is he in Michigan or Wisconsin, and how much support can he draw in those two states with his energy on working class issues when Michigan and Wisconsin have Democratic governors who are strong on working class issues and union support, remains to be seen.

In the past much of the oil money going from US, EU, China and India went into wars in the Middle East, Salman has focused on development. using the funding opportunities that need to taken to develop the region, funding which will no longer be there after the shift to renewal energy by 2035. New York Governor Kathy Hochul halts a congestion pricing plan for New York City saying it would have unintended consequences and hinder New York's economic recovery. It would make it harder for cost of living for families after the effects of the pandemic. The plan was to charge $15 fee to enter New York Manhattan south of 60th Street. It was seen as a way to support a financially strapped MTA subway authority. Hochul said- "Let's be real. $15 may not sound a lot to someon who has the means but it can break the budget of a hardworking middle class household."

The election of Merz in Germany as chancellor means a sharing of minds with Macron of France, the two leaders share the same approach, coming 3 years after the inertia under chancellor Scholz. It means the steps will be taken for European defense and for a European alternative to NATO. It also means efforts will be made for the French-German economic engine to be revived. 

UK's prime minister Starmer also supports this effort for a united Europe to tackle defense and economic challenges in 2025. Leyen, head of the European Union is also a member of CDU party of Merz and led the defense ministry under Merkel.

The  Washington Post review of archived radio transmissions in this report suggests a possible cause of the Palisades Los Angeles wildfires- reignition from a previous fire on a mountain ridge just 6 days prior on New Year's Eve. That fire was knocked out only to reignite. Smoldering fire can stay in wood and underground only to reignite in very windy conditions even for 10 days. In though very windy conditions were expected LA Fire Department lacked the resources to stay on it for a few days - in what the Washington Post citing the LAFD says is in a stretch of Temescal Ridge in the Santa Monica mountains.

How European countries Germany, Poland, Britain, France, and Italy are increasing their defense forces and defense budgets to counter Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its military preparations is shown here in DW.com. Under chancellor Merz Germany plans to invest 5% of its GDP in defense for the first time and build Bundeswehr defense forces as the best in Europe. A key factor says DW.com was the speech of chancellor Scholz three days after the invasion of Ukraine, a speech that changed minds in Germany about the needs for defense in the 21st century. It is called the Zeitenwende or turning point speech on Feb 27, 2022.

Morgenson looks at the aspects of GM's culture that led to the recall crisis of 2014. She looks at the lack of accountability in a culture where managers were more concerned about preserving and protecting their own positions and less concerned about doing the right thing. The culture became ingrained over time to the point that there were terms referring to the way managing is to be conducted in the company- a "GM nod" referring to an action plan where everybody says OK but plans to do nothing, a "GM salute" where people crossed their arms and pointed to others meaning the responsibility is some one else's. Training about writing on safety issues required employees to write "smart" by not using words such as "problem" or "defect" and using instead "issue," condition or "matter."

The BJP party under Modi gains 282 seats and sweeps the north, centre and west of the country, and parts of the south and east. Sir Fred Goodwin left RBS with a 693,000 British pounds annual that was arranged in the contract. At the end of 2007 Sir Fred was owed 597,000 British pounds, but when he was forced out in October 2008, Sir Fred 50 years old, was given credit for 10 years more work, increasing the payout to 693,000 British pounds a year. With the highest annual loss in British history of 24 billion pounds reported by RBS for 2008, the government is asking Sir Fred to take areduced pension. This has resulted in a nasty exchange with Sir Fred who has refused, and the British public and the people of Edinburgh especially are furious. "There is asense of fury that the government seems impotent, unable to act when the man chiefly responsible for the bank's collapse is able to walk away with apension that others can only dream of- and at the ripe olfd age of 50!" said David Pickering, aspokesman for the Edinburgh Association of Community Councils. "And what is worse that we, the British taxpayers are actually paying for it."...

Blinder, a Professor of Economics at Princeton, and former Vice Chairman of the Fed, always supported Sheila Bair's efforts at FDIC to help reduce forclosures. He says, Secretary Paulson has released little of the TARP money for reducing foreclosures and helping homeowners and none of it went to buying up troubled mortgage assets. So he argues the nations mortgage crisis, which is at the root of its problems goes on. The government that gave us Katrina and the Iraq war will now give us the TARP program, which apart from supporting the banks has done little to address the other serious problems that it had been approved for. And no conditions were made with the banks that required them to continue lending, all it accomplished is unfreeze the credit markets, a serious objective but clearly not sufficient to address the underlying causes of this crisis. Martin Feldstein, Professor of Economics at Harvard, has also repeatedly this year, from the early months of 2008, called for help to homeowners to reduce foreclosures. Little in the way of his counsel is being heeded, even though he has represented Republican administrations including Reagan and Bush in the past. Clearly too many conflicting interests stalled any progress, and the repeated crises since summer left Secretary Paulson and Fed Chairman more of a role putting out fires or forestalling dangerous developments in financial markets, than setting serious policy measures in place. ...

Systemic risks from "too big to fail" and the pushback on capital reserve requirements that leave banks with lower reserves. Ewing describes the role of the president of the Swiss Central Bank, Mr Hildebrand, in setting rules for higher capital reserves for Swiss banks than that of other countries and the pushback from the banks resisting the new regulations. "He will never find another job in Switzerland," a Swiss newspaper Der Sonntag quoted one banker saying this about Mr. Hildebrand. Losses at Swiss bank UBS during the financial crisis and the $2 billion loss at a UBS trading desk in 2011 have created a new awareness of systemic risk at banks. During the financial crisis banks used an optimistic estimate of "risk weighted assets" which led to insufficient capital reserves in a crisis even as the banks were shown to be well capitalized. A sense that banks in Europe and the U.S. will continue to have insufficient capital reserves at 3-4% of assets under new rules and with the longer phase in times for the new Basel III regulations of reserves at 7% of assets to after 2016....

Japan's International Cooperation Agency plans to fill some of the gaps in western participation in accelerating African infrastructure building that have opened up in the last  two decades. Unneeded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan led to lack of attention and focus on much needed development in Africa by the US and Europe. This is changing and the JICA with its long history of participation in African development is also now taking on an important role to give Africa a new opportunity to accelerate economic progress after the pandemic.
