Scott Shane of the NYT provides this exceptional account of how the ideology of Wahhabism on which the Saudi monarchy is based has influenced the evolution of Islam, but not in the way other religions have evolved into more moderate and open religions. Christianity evolved from the period of religious conflict, and evolved to the point that the basis of progress was based on education and technology in most of northern and southern Europe. Where the evolution did not take place because of more intolerant behaviours such as in Spain with the Spanish Inquisition and ideas from the medieval period, this development based on education and technology lagged severely behind.  Wahhabism developed as a result of a sect started by a religious cleric Wahhab in a poor desert region around Mecca and Medina, now the Saudi Kingdom, who sought the help of a tribal chief Ibn Saud. They used the religious-political alliance to gain tribal dominance in the region. Wahhabism sought to change Islam by banning worship and religious rites at tombs common in that period. It also as Brookings scholar William McCants cited here says, drew "sharp lines" and intolerance between believers and non-believers- all non-believers including other sects of Islam, Shiites, Christians. The movement spread throughout the region, but was crushed by the Ottoman Empire based in Istanbul, Turkey, by the 1850's, only to be revived in the 1920's following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. A Norwegian expert Heggenhammer cited here says clearly Islam did not benefit from the evolution that other religions had, and Wahhabism has slowed this evolution into and open, tolerant religion because of its "sharp lines" and intolerance of other faiths and ideas with the Wahhabism from a medieval perod. In India the British rule brought enlightenment thinkers (John Stuart Mill for example was a clerk for the British East India company). But no such change happened under Ottoman rule to inspire leaders like Gandhi and Nehru to setup a new constitution that made changes from medieval Hindu beliefs such as caste and religious practices based on superstition.  The development of an oil rich state in Saudi Arabia with the discovery of oil, and the dependence from 1950-2010 of the global economy, has led say experts to the export of the Wahhabist kind of Islam to other countries in Middle East and South Asia. This they say made the evolution to democracy and peaceful coexistence difficult or impossible in the region. ...

Bird watching during the pandemic from the annual review of BBC Gardeners World. Clean tidy hedges, "tidy" gardening has removed some of the caterpillars on rotten wood for birds such as the blue tit to feed on. Planting flowering plants such as the honeysuckle is suggested to provide birds with more than just food and water, so that birds have something to feed on in a natural setting. Birds need a slightly messy natural setting, including leaves and rotting wood in the back of an hedge.

Politics in Britain as Britain prepares for a general election. The UKIP party polls 13 percent and Conservatives 32 percent and only an alliance could beat the Liberals and Labour, Greens combined. So why is Boris Johnson not embracing UKIP and Farage. Boris Johnson top adviser Cummings is said to have kept Farage to a minimum in display during the EU elections, causing resentment. Farage has doubts about the Conservatives and has rejected an alliance. The Indian prime minister talks in his radio program Mann Ki Baat (Talking our Mind) about Indian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics and overcoming any hesitancy for vaccines. He remembers athletes from the Olympics past- Milkha Singh India's fastest runner, who worked hard and emerged from the partition bloodshed as a survivor in 1947 to compete in the Rome Olympics in 1960. Milkha Singh was the first Indian male athlete to reach the finals of the Olympics when he barely missed the bronze medal by 0.1 seconds in the 400 metres race. He remembered for this years Tokyo Olympics hockey player Neha Goel, race walker Priyanka Goswami, javelin thrower Shivpal Singh, archers Deepika Kumari, Pravin Jadhav, badminton player Chirag Shetty. Pravin Jadhav is a laborer's son from Satara district in Maharashtra who is competing in archery. The prime minister talked about two people from Betul district, Madhya Pradesh, with vaccine fears from spread of disinformation. He pointed out that over 300 million people have been vaccinated and this includes his own 100 year old mother. He urged India to trust science and scientists. Sometimes, he said, people get a mild fever, that lasts only a few days. "Avoiding the vaccine can be very dangerous, you are not only putting yourself at risk but also  your family and the entire village." A Greens party MP says taking action on climate change is a clear vote winner. Sewage and water pollution in the rivers is an issue coming up again and again. Communities underfunded and undercared for by the Tories. John McConnell, a former shadow chancellor and MP, says for a decisive victory that helps get the majorities needed to pass legislation for funding investment in the economy, in infrastructure and fighting climate change, the Labor party needs a better result than this one. After a new Labor government is elected by the middle of its term it becomes important that the win in the general election is a big one with an overall majority in parliament. For this Labor needs to do well in Scotland taking back the position in Scotland that it held in 1997 before the emergence of the Scottish National Party.  ...

Voters took note of the quality of each candidate, and Democrats were scrappier  in the fight this time around to give a tight result. Voters did not know much of what Mr. Biden had done to cap healthcare costs in midterm elections for 36 governors races and for control of the US Congress. The pocket book issues mattered to voters with sharp increases in the price of oil and groceries, but less so than made out earlier and voters may have grasped the bigger picture.

The quality of candidates mattered and on the Republican side the influence of Mr. Trump in the primaries led to choosing weaker candidates because of their loyalty to Mr. Trump. In the end with a large turnout of voters on both sides the election was much tighter than expected. Democrats in each state did better using their own initiative and effort this time and were much scrappier in the fight for the Governors races and the Senate.

BRICS is becoming an obsolete concept as Brazil, India and South Africa are essentially looking for ways in which they can increase opportunities for growth. It was a concept started by a Goldman Sachs investment banker Mr. O'Neill at a different time in 2010. The world has gone through the 2009 financial crisis, the pandemic, and the supply chain crisis with overconcentration of EU and US supply chain in China. These events are leading to a shift under the Biden administration to bring India  into the G7 into a new G8 that includes India. Only Russia, China and South Africa remain from the original BRICS. Russia because of the war in Ukraine now depends on Chinese support and trade. Brazil will gradually shift back to its position as part of the US alliance in Latin America with Mexico, Argentina and Chile. India with its plans for rapid growth to build the modern third largest economy by 2040 seeks supply chain integration with the US and EU in the position that China holds today.   ...

Biden's love of Irish poetry comes through at critical moments in his career. His efforts reading his uncle Ed Finnegan's book of W. B. Yeats poetry and trying to memorize some lines as a child to  help overcome his stutter. His quoting of Seamus Haney at critical times in his career- and after winning the 2020 election. He also quoted Haney in the Irish parliament this week using Haney's translation of the Greek playwright Sophocles- Haney's The Cure at Troy. In a way says NPR Biden found his own voice through Yeats. One can see from the speech at the Irish parliament that the words of a Yeats or a Haney has a magical effect on him- helps him come alive and become invested with a youthful energy, and a new found vigor that comes from purposeful living. He combines Haney on hope with his reference to Chinese president Xi and being asked what defines America- his answer "Possibilities."

This Times leading article on UK government's coronavirus policy says it is inconsistent, and a muddled effort just as the third wave is accelerating. It asks the public to be cautious when going outside and still opens nightclubs with covid passports not required till the end of September. By August cases could reach 100,000 say experts so that the nightclub and bars reopening can only fuel the rise in cases. The British government must be aware that the Netherlands opened nightclubs and bars in June and this led to a sudden jump in cases with 40% of new cases coming from nightclubs.  The policy is undermining public confidence. It is doing this at the same time as it is asking people to self isolate for 10 days. The policy also does not require covid vaccination pass for all events and for shops and restaurants as is being done in France and in other countries on a regional basis as in Germany.

Abdulrazak Gurnah who left Zanzibar for England in the 1960's was given the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2021 for his "compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee caught between cultures and continents." In his acceptance speech Gurnah says in his writings he engaged in a refusal to accept the attitudes, the stereotypes and disdain towards people of British colonies that he met daily. He says that after a prolonged period of poverty and alienation in England it became clear to him that there was something he needed to say. Gurnah says he came to the "deeply unsettling realization that a new simpler history was being constructed, transforming, even obliterating what had happened." Writing he said was to show "what can be otherwise, what it is that the hard domineering eye cannot see, what makes people apparently small in stature feel assured about themselves, regardless of the disdain of others." ...
