More than 240 hours or 40% of ICE training time cut to speed up training for more officers. ICE training  for hands on practice and scenarios cut from ICE training program, Washington Post 2026. 900 ICE officers completed the basic training by Jan. 1, 2026, which is 3 times the number in the previous year 12 months before August 2025. The concern is about ICE quality standards in the future, so that the rush to train officers does not shortchange their needed education in all aspects of training materials and assuring a complete grasp of the content .

T-Mobile plans to spend $4 billion to upgrade its wireless network to LTE. The failed plan to merge with AT&T has affected T-Mobile because plans to upgrade its network were put on hold. As a result T-Mobile will be 2 years behind Verizon in upgrading to LTE and will be the last wireless network upgrading. Contract customers declined in the 4th quarter of 2011 by 802,000 with all the uncertainty surrounding the merger. AT&T made a cash payment to T-Mobile of 2.3 billion euros for the failed merger. However the situation has turned out negatively for Deutsche Telekom because of a 2.3 billion writedown in the value of T-Mobile USA ,and an additional 800 million euro writedown in Europe. If T-Mobile decides to offer the Apple iPhone to attract contract customers additional financial commitments will have to be made.

Tom Brokaw is perplexed by the absence of the war in Afghanistan as a campaign issue in 2010 US elections. Especially because the war is in its 9th year, has caused 5000 dead, 30,000 wounded, and cost over $1 trillion dollars. He reasons that this is because the vast majority of Americans can opt out of fighting the war on the ground. The all volunteer service draws from 1% of the population, with the majority from working class or middle class backgrounds. This has an unintended effect in making the costs of the war less visible, when actually it is taking a toll in other ways. The US is short of funds to build much needed infrastructure or update infrastructure. States and local governments are laying off teachers because of budget shortfalls, and the national budget deficit makes less money available for solving pressing problems in carbon emissions, energy, and infrastructure. Only recently New Jersey Governor Christie put on hold a new tunnel into New York City because of a lack funds. Pressing infrastructure issues elsewhere will be postponed in this manner. And the outlook for the next 20 years, according to Robert Gordon of Northwestern University, is not going to be better with slower growth at an average of 1.5%, leaving less money for the kinds of projects that defined America from the Erie canal to interstate highways. Brokaw says, the country would benefit from an effort to discuss what happens next, in the continued expenditure of blood and treasure. Ways in which more beans can be part of the diverse foods in the US and Europe not just for climate change but also from the point of advantage of taste once new use is adopted, and of nutrition. An example is chick peas eaten as hummus which has grown rapidly. The same potential is there for beans and legumes to offer better nutrition and better more diverse food, less dependent on animal food with its impact on the climate. The nutritional value is a big part of this change, and the potential for reducing obesity, fighting disease.
