Brazil's infrastructure needs include port and road facilities for its agricultural exports and mining industry. Road and rail transport networks for passengers are small considering Brazil's size. The rail network is smaller than that of France and only 12% of the one million mile road network is paved. Brazilian petroleum fund Petrosal will invest in infrastructure needs. Investments are being made to upgrade port facilities by Santos Brazil, and investment in toll roads by CCR, a private-highways company. The government is planning investments in infrastructure to prepare for the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.

The Deepwater Oil Spill Commission staff said BP management was responsible for "not putting policies and systems in place to ensure that decisions made to reduce costs and improve efficiency did not increase risks or diminish safety." The staff report says the mistakes and oversights that led to the blowout were a result of management failures by BP, Halliburton Co., and Transocean Ltd. The companies failed to share information with contractors or within their own teams, and contractors did not share information with the companies. This resulted in critical decisions being made without fully grasping their context or importance.

The S.E.C.'s non-enforcement position on holding credit ratings agencies accountable and liable for credit ratings they issue on securities. This was done through a "no-action" letter issued in July 2010, that indicated the S.E.C. would not bring enforcement actions against issuers that did not disclose ratings in prospectuses. This decision was made for 6 months, but has now been extended indefinitely by the S.E.C. It defeats the intent of the Dodd-Frank law and opens the door to improper credit ratings being issued. This was one of the causes of the 2008 financial crisis.

The Even Hotels brand of IHG which operates Holiday Inns will focus on frequent travellers in the U.S. who want to keep their exercize routines. It will have fitness centers 3-4 times larger than existing ones, located right near the lobby, benches that can serve as exercize benches, a mat for exercize, bathrooms that let in natural light, cafe with healthy items on the menu. This segment is also being served by Courtyard Marriott, and Hilton Garden Inn. IHG will convert existing hotels and rooms with 100 hotels planned by 2015, the first opening in 2013.

Solutions include being firm in response to aggressive behaviour, handling some of the difficult tasks even if this means more work which should be covered in the next performance review. Handling it one-on-one to come up with a solution is much better than politicizing the situation- which happens by bringing in the human resources department- especially as it could affect the relationships with other co-workers and bring down the morale of the department.

The close contest between Republicans and Democrats in Wisconsin to recall Governor Walker five months before the presidential election. Grassroots activists pushed hard for the recall after large protests at the state Capitol. The national Republican party has invested resources in this and sees this as part of the national campaign. Walker has raised $25 million, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, and has far larger election campaign funds. Romney needs to win in the midwest in states like Wisconsin and Ohio, to win in November, and this recall election is being taken seriously by the Republicans.

The U.S. annual productivity growth rate has averaged about 1.1% since 2011, says Nobel prize winner Prescott, about half the 2.5% rate since 1948. If productivity growth remains low his estimate is that U.S. living standards will increase by only about 12% by 2024, instead of 28% at the historical rate of productivity growth. A similiar situation happened in Japan after its financial crisis in the 1990's, with low productivity growth not deflation being the primary cause. Voter sentiment changes in Italy for the Democratic party led by prime minister Letta, only a few months after the national elections. Under Letta who belongs to a younger generation of Italian leaders, the Democratic party which supports being in the EU and pro-growth policies, has staged a comeback in Italian mayoral elections for 67 cities. The party of Mr. Berlusconi lost ground, and the party of newcomer Beppe Grillo also lost ground. Voter turnout was 48.5%, after years of failed politics of the national parties in Italy. This is new reason for optimism for the future of Italy.

Sears Holdings spent $1.46 per square foot in 2012 on its stores compared to an average of $9.45 per square foot for Target, Penneys, Walmart, Lowe's and Home Depot, according to this report. Lampert counters this by saying his fund made investments in technology and online retail. With a glut of retail goods piling up at stores and stores liquidating, some of this merchandise is ending up in emerging market countries from Pakistan to remote parts of Russia. Hudson's Salvage, a 45 store discount retailer is selling women's bouses, pants, and dresses intended to sell at full price retailers at $140, at prices as low as $6.99. Some of this stuff is ending at stores selling to Hispanic shoppers in smaller US cities, central New Jersey, and more of the high end brand name merchandise is being discounted heavily.

 Frustration has grown with the poor early management response from U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, says WSJ.  The president responded at one point with a tweet that "he told me nothing until later." The WSJ looked into Mr. Azar's missteps in a report recently. The president is considering replacing Mr. Azar says WSJ. Ms. Verma the head of Medicaid and Medicare Services is being considered. She has worked closely with vice president Mike Pence throughout this crisis. Mr. Azar served as HHS general counsel and later deputy secretary under president George W. Bush. He then worked as lobbyist for Eli Lilly.  This WSJ report says Mr. Trump called Mr. Azar on his flight from India to Washington, and the next day replaced Mr. Azar as head of the White House coronavirus task force with Mr. Pence. The president says repeatedly that vice president Mike Pence, as head of the White House task force has worked night and day round the clock to guide the effort- including talking to 51 state governors, coordinating the entire effort, and providing the president with reliable advice. In the depths of this crisis never has so much depended on so few- on vice president Pence, a former governor of Indiana, Admiral Polowczyk, Dr. Birx, Dr. Fauci, and the governors of states worst affected by the coronavirus. ...

Tory MP's rebels in the southern part of England are opposed to prime minister Boris Johnson's second lockdown for the whole of England. This report in The Times of London looks at how Johnson's conservative government might have to get Labor party support to pass the lockdown measures in parliament. Or Labor may decide to abstain from the vote. Mr. Gove says the NHS risks being overwhelmed if the lockdown does not take place. Responding to the statements that southern England does not have high or has falling rates of coronavirus Mr. Johnson says it has been shown that a low rate catches up in one area when it is next to a high rate area for coronavirus so that the result is the spread of the virus to the point where the NHS cannot cope.  The NHS like the French health system and other health systems in the European Union, U.S.  India, and other countries are strained to the limit. Most healt care workers in hospitals have felt severe strain on themselves and their families during the first wave. Most are exhausted and are in a situation of fatigue with the added factor of some healthcare workers on leave from the virus illness. This puts additional burdens on the system. Without the action taken the health system may be overwhelmed in many countries leading to disaster.   ...

Indian coast guard and Gujarat anti-terrorist squad size large amounts of heroin at Mundra port and along the Porbandar coast.  Afghanistan has a 2000 kilometer border with Iran and another 2000 kilometer border with Pakistan. There is now increased risk of this activity along India and Sri Lanka's coastlines and borders, says the Economic Times. Much of the colonial period was marked by British traders use of opium from Bengal and other parts of India in illegal activities in China through Chinese ports for sale of opium -leading to the Opium wars in 1850 with China's feudal monarchy and eventually to China turning to the CCP. This was conducted under the British East India Company and condoned under the British Empire- making it one of the worst activities of colonial powers in history. Some of the same activities are being conducted and condoned by countries in the region. A multinational allied task force Combined Force 150 keeps track of the oceans in the North Arabian Sea and in the Horn of Africa. More naval forces are needed from India, the US, UK, Australia, Japan and other countries to keep the oceans safe and clear, and protect people in the region. ...

Compared to 2008 Hillary Clinton is now very clear that she will stand up for woman's issues openly- "it is about no ceilings, no limits, for any of us." About playing the women's card she says "deal me in." One of the paradoxes of this election season is that white women registered voters 35 to 64 years of age have shown less enthusiasm for Hillary, around 34-36 percent in polls such as the NBC-WSJ poll. Interestingly the figure climbs to 66 percent for ages 18-34, and to 56 percent for ages over 64, for all women. Experts attribute this to the fact that women over 35 are facing fewer barriers than the women over 64 who remember the hard won battles for women's rights when it was hard for women to get a credit card or run for office, or be promoted in business. Traditional career choices were being teachers or nurses. A lot has changed in the last 20 years, and this has left some women who are no longer facing such barriers turning to other issues to choose their candidate such as happened in their enthusiasm for Bernie Sanders. Overall for all women registered voters  Hillary gets 52 percent support, Trump 37 percent, according to a July 2016 NBC/WSJ poll.   ...

Malaysia filed criminal charges against Goldman Sachs Group Inc. unit and a former partner in relation to the 1MDB financial scandal. Goldman arranged a $6.5 billion in bonds for 1MDB in 2012 and 2013 of which $2.7 billing was allegedly stolen, according to this report in the Wall Street Journal. The bank was able to make $600 million in profits. Malaysia's Attorney General stated that "Malaysia considers the allegations in the charges against the accused to be grave violations of our securities laws, and to reflect their severity, prosecutors will seek criminal fines against the accused well in excess of the $2.7 billion misappropriated from the bonds proceeds and $600 million in fees received by Goldman Sachs, and custodial sentences, the maximum term of imprisonment being 10 years." The 1MDB scandal was a major issue in recent Malaysian elections resulting in a return to government of Mahathir Mohammed in an attempt to restore integrity and transparency to the country's finances and spending. The Alternative for Germany AfD party's increasing popularity in the former communist eastern part of Germany based in Dresden, is hurting its popularity in the west. It is expected to do well in elections in Saxony where city of Dresden is located, and in Thuringia and in Brandenburg in election in the fall of 2019. Much of its support has come from being the only opposition to the open door refugee policy followed by chancellor Merkel, seen as goning too far.  Merkel herself and the new CDU leader Ann Margaret Kampbrauer have decided it was not the right policy considering that many or most are economic refugees. This policy is now reversed and migrants are down to a trickle, with a new policy of foreign aid and selective intervention to troubled countries to keep economic refugees in their home countries. This report says any gains in the east could come with loss of many more votes in the west as the party loses its popularity in the west. This is because far right parties always had done better in the east with its older population, higher unemployment and loss of population. This is a legacy from the communist period in eastern part of Germany, and the merging of the two Germanys that led to westward migration and loss of economic potential in the east.  ...

Saudi Arabia is accelerating the IPO of Saudi Aramco after the attack on Saudi oil facilities by missiles and drones. Saudis decided to import oil to keep their commitments to supply oil to other countries as the attack took out half the country's oil production. The IP instead of floating 5% of Saudi oil company Aramco will now float 10%, double the initial target. The 10% could raise $200 billion and help the company recover. This depends on the valuation being close to the Saudi estimate of $2 trillion. Analysts estimate valuation at $1.5 trillion which would raise $150 billion.  There are differences in how large the IPO should be in Saudi Arabia, between the government and the management of Aramco. Mr. Falih, head of Aramco was removed after working for a 5% limited float of Aramco, when the government favored 10% because of growing needs in defense and industrial, and new city sectors.  The broad contours of the plan are to float 1% in 2019, and another 1% on the Saudi domestic stock market, Tadawul. Followed by a 3% listing on an international stock exchange, Tokyo a possible choice. The Saudi government wants to float another 5% after this. Saudi officials and contractors estimate it will take months for production to be restored to levels before the attacks.  ...
