About 11% of student loans outstanding amount were over 90 days past due in Sept. 2012, increasing from 8.9% at the end of the second quarter 2012, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This now exceeds the figure for credit cards. U.S. student loan debt is now at $956 billion for the third quarter 2012, increasing by 4.6%. About 93% of student loans made in 2011 were made by the U.S. government, which is promoting access to loans without asking for information about borrowers finances and education plans and ability to pay the loans back. Because student loans have to be paid back and are hard to discharge even in bankruptcy, this means many borowers who cannot find jobs are deep in debt, and unlikely to get loans for many years for cars and other needs. Moody's warns of a wave of student loan defaults in coming years.

Boeing's improvements in quality and production processes for the Dreamliner, as the first Dreamliner which will not need major additional work before delivery comes off the production line. Costs of production have reached the point to where Boeing is losing $100 million on each plane sold. Ony 300 small assembly tasks remained, closer to the 200 that is the company's goal, and improvement over the 6000 additional small assembly tasks remaining in the early versions. The Everett, Washington plant now can make a 787 Dreamliner plane every 6-7 days. It costs Boeing $242 million to make each plane, and it sells them for $113 million according to UBS analysts. Boeing will have invested about $20 billion in the Dreamliner by 2014, when analysts say it should turn a profit.

About 900 Arab refugees are crammed into a boat which capsizes 60 miles off the Libyan coast in April 2015, killing about 850 people. This is the worst single incident in an increasing influx of refugees from boats leaving the Libyan coast for Italy. About 171,000 refugees from North Africa made this journey in 2014, and increasing numbers are doing it in 2015 to flee the civil wars in Syria and Libya, and hardship conditions in Tunisia, Eritrea and other sub-Saharan countries.

Passage through Congress of the $1.9 trillion relief bill is expected with a close vote as some Democrats in the House of Representatives oppose the concessions made on the minimum wage and reducing jobless benefits to $300 instead of $400 a week. Senator Manchin, Democrat of West Virginia asked for these concessions in the Senate, saying he would join the Republicans if these concessions were not made. This shows how close the vote is in the Senate which voted 50 to 49  to pass the Biden bill. Overall the bill does much to bring relief to Americans suffering from the effects on income from the coronavirus, and supports local governments. It funds more vaccination sites and more vaccination teams. Unemployment benefits are extended from March 14 to September 6 at $300 a week. About 85% of the population qualifies for a one time cheque of $ 1400. It also increases rent support for struggling tenants and includes $510 million for the homeless. State and local governments can now rehire1.3 million employees using $350 billion in federal aid. ...

German chancellor Angela Merkel comes out openly in support of the recommendations for a tougher lockdown made by Germany's National Academy of Science. This would require an end to school attendance Dece. 14, extended Christmas school break, full closure of all but essential businesses Dec. 24, and working from home to the fullest possible way. Merkel made a passionate speech in parliament ro mostly unmasked members. The opposition Alternative for Germany and the Free Democrats were critical of the government's handling of the pandemic which they called a failure with rising cases reaching a total of 1.2 million. The deaths are at 590 on a recent day, with total approaching 20,000. Alice Weidel of AfD described Merkel's handling as aimless and grotesque.  Christian Lindner of FDP said the lockdowns had proved to be ineffective. He was critical of undue harm to Germany's business and economy. Weidel said Merkel's legacy would be debt and unemployment.   ...

It is carved out of the rockface of hills near Chengdu in the 8th century AD. Buddhism made its way to China and then Japan from India with Bodhidharma (Daruma in Japan) in the 6th century AD. Hsuan Tsang a Chinese Buddhist monk in Chengdu, Sichuan province made his way to Nalanda in India 627 AD to 643 AD for a 17 year trip to find the original Buddhist texts and teachings. He called India In-tu the place of the shining moon because of it being a spiritual place, and birthplace of the Buddha.

The last time the water reached the Buddha's feet was in 1949. Today after the pandemic pilgrims burn offerings at the Buddha's feet in 2020.

China's efforts to build its own core technologies in chip production leads to a ban on American manufacturer Micron for supplying China's chip needs. This allows Chinese companies to fill the need as China pursues its own Made in China model similar to America's Made in America model that president Biden is taking up to catch up with Taiwan. The title is a misnomer as there is no clash as such with the US when countries are developing their own safer supply chains as the US is doing and working with its European allies on this. In fact the competition is with Taiwan, in an effort to correct a mistaken decision for the US under the pressure of laissez faire advocates in the US to not let the federal government support American chip makers that over two decades has created this huge gap with Taiwan. Laissez faire means to leave alone, which came at the wrong time when competing nations including Taiwan and South Korea were supporting their chipmakers aggressively and covertly and presenting their costs as something the US could not compete with. In parts of Mexico sugary softdrinks are easier to access than clean tap water, says this report in DW.com. This is a problem that existed in Mexico for many years. Amy Guthrie in the WSJ August 28, 2013, described the problem in -Health Problem over Soda Flares in Mexico- which was shown in Lyrarc.com in 2013, showing the US, Chile, Mexico and Argentina with high consumption of sugary softdrinks and high rates of diseases related to this. Mexico's government has made efforts to increase awareness about the risks and dangers of overuse and Bloomberg philanthropy has made efforts to increase awareness. Yet the problem has persisted. The risks are high for countries such as India, China, Vietnam. One ad in Mexico City subways showed 20 ounce sugary softdrink bottle and asked "Would you take 12 teaspoonfuls of sugar?" Mexico passed the US in countries with high obesity rate over 100 million people in 2013. Higher all cause mortality was shown in a European study of 451,000 people for people drinking more than 2 glasses of sweetened softdrinks a day, with data collected between 1992-2000 and supporting public health campaigns limiting the use of such sweetened softdrinks. ...

The two contrasts between Eintracht Frankfurt a soccer club with a local presence and modern management with Germany's 50+1 rule, and Barcelona with Catalan support but an international club in which the president runs the club independent of members, could not be larger. 30,000 Eintracht Frankfurt fans make their way to a game with Barcelona at Camp Nou in the Catalan city. Barcelona did not make it to the final stages of the Champions League and struggled to pay the large amount of money owed to Messi during the pandemic. Because of its old ownership structure Barcelona is not able to raise financing by selling shares and in capital markets in the way Frankfurt can. Under the 50+1 rule, a German Football League regulation, club members retain majority voting rights in an outsourced company that runs its football team. This gives it a genuine local presence and is why German clubs have opposed the Super League of just a few star teams playing each other. Italy faces tighter restrictions and a national lockdown at Easter for the coronavirus, Italians who were the first to go into lockdown on March 10, 2020, now think they will be the last to exit lockdowns. The mood in Europe is of frustration with the slow vaccination drive and the failure to procure enough vaccine supplies and to approve vaccines in time. The US and Britain have vaccination drives that are moving rapidly leading to a reduction in cases and deaths. In Europe new cases are rising since mid February 2021, and there is the spread of the new variant first detected in the UK.  The variants make up 70% of new cases in France says Health Minister Olivier Veran. ICU's in France are 80% full. Elections in France in 2022 and in Germany in September 2021 are leading to government reluctance to impose tighter restrictions. The government strategy is now being questioned. Only 30% of Germans now have confidence in chancellor Merkel's ability to make competent decisions. The CDU's partner in the government, the SDU socialists have even less trust with SDU getting less than 10%. There are signs of a third wave of coronavirus in Germany resulting from variants of the virus, slow vaccinations, and reopenings. ...

In this interview in The Hindu with Public Health Foundation of India president Srinath Reddy, the importance of safe behaviours including masks and social distancing, public discipline to tackle a potential third wave. This was also pointed out separately by the Director AIIMS.  Mr. Reddy says study by Public Health England shows just one dose of Astra Zeneca vaccine is not very effective against the Delta variant- about 30% effective. As a result he suggests the need to reduce the spacing intervals which are at 8-12 weeks to a shorter interval now that adequate supplies of vaccine will be available starting in July and August till the end of the year. The initial spacing was 4 weeks when Astra Zeneca vaccine was first introduced and at which time the variants had not emerged. The Indian federal government affidavit to the Supreme Court shows that 1880 million doses of vaccine will be available by the end of the year 2021 to vaccinate fully with 2 doses the population of India over 18 years using 5 locally manufactured Made in India vaccines. This does not include the mRNA vaccines that will be made available from Moderna and Pfizer for which cold storage facilities are being prepared by the federal government.   ...

Roger Cohen in the NYT says Macron has missed the public mood in France, the cost of living crisis and the social and economic problems left by the pandemic. FR24 says about two thirds of the French people think this is the wrong time to tackle the pensions issue. The change in the pensions is not an immediate solution as it will be phased in over a period of time stretching to 2030. Many solutions could have been put in place to tackle age discrimination and other problems to make it possible to work productively for longer. Macron needed to address these problems and come up with ways to lessen the burden of the cost of living crisis first before tackling longer term issues. This is a major misstep by Macron, and comes from his lack of experience as one of the youngest persons to become president of France at the age of 39. He was reelected but only with the help of voters who had supported  a socialist candidate Mr. Melenchon. Macron said after that election that he would listen carefully to the voting public that had elected him, even with reservations after the yellow vest protests about his lack of sensitivity for people struggling to make a living. ...

Are Republicans saying let the roads, bridges, airports, built in the 1940-1960's heyday of American industrialization as China and India's is now, let them crumble? What do the educated minds of the WSJ Board say about coal in China and India and their effects on their massive use multiple times that of US and EU in history, is it not damaging to the environment? And why the Chinese realized the health in North China with coal winter use was worse than in South China cut their coal use. Are they saying lets burn fossil fuels and ignore, and if investment has to be made in solar who is going to do it? Is it OK for Republicans that we just import from China all our solar panels indefinitely into the future? "Green New Deal" is just a perjorative term, policy has to be made thoughtfully and without prejudice or bias of any sort for the best that we can do for the American people, ignoring so called "right" or "left." Democrats continue to believe they lost in 2024 because they did not attack DJT enough. This fails to cite issues such as cost of living- surge in the third year of the Biden administration with 20% increase in prices and Biden failing to take notice and address this quickly. A wave of illegal immigration- the failure of Mayorkas, himself a Cuban immigrant in 1960, put in charge of Homeland Security and ICE, and Harris who was an attorney helping indigents in inner city San Francisco, to grasp the fears of border states and southern states. The failure to understand that the border was open and inviting waves of illegal immigrants, some with questionable backgrounds. This issue created a sense of unease in the fabric of society and American people. Other issues simply showed how Harris could not relate to the conservative people and average people in the country in the cultural aspect such as transgender, rural America. Biden pulling out suddenly, loss of rural vote- failure of Democrats since Obama to pay attention to rural voters, Harris not appealing to the white male vote in the US, are other factors that hurt Democrats. DJT gained with the shooting incident in Pennsylvania in which he survived, and the perception raised during a garbage truck and DJT photo that the Democrats derided, seen by the public as looking down on working class people. Democrats never really grasped how the political system had gone in reverse- the Republicans had put cultural aspect first and conservative now meant working class voters and white voters in rural areas/small towns, big cities, ( the Archie Bunker type of an earlier era who was now a Democrat, not the college educated and Ivy league Harvard type that had taken over the Democratic party). This continues to this day with some paradox as the business class and the billionaire class sit alongside the working class person in the Republican party DJT created. DJT did this in 2016 by pulling together workers hurt by Bush and Obama's policies favoring the educated classes and affluent, ignoring rural areas and farmers, and committing US to wars in the Middle East that squandered the Nations' resources and human lives. This was aggravated in the Biden/Harris/Mayorkas years by letting in migrants across the border by the millions that created a great deal of unease in the working classes. In this way labor unions or their rank and file left the Democratic party- a problem that plagues Democrats to this day, that Biden tried but failed to fix. The border issues had become complex by the latter part of the Biden administration because of the complete collapse of Venezuelan economy and the drug cartels in Mexico smuggling people and drugs across the border, for which the Biden administration or Harris had no answer.  It was the failure of administrations to continue the Monroe Doctrine in the form given by FDR as "Good Neigbor Policy," and JFK as the Alliance for Progress, allowing drug cartels and foreign European powers to intervene in the western hemisphere, desorying good governance in Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba and other nations in Latin America. By the second year of the DJT administration Venezuela, and the border were brought under control, and the situation in Mexico put in a new direction. ...

As HP separates into two separate companies that can be focussed and nimble, CEO Meg Whitman says that it has been a difficult road for HP. The new organization will have a lower cost basis by making job cuts as HP sales shrink- about 30,000 additional job cuts will be made in addition to the 55,000 announced earlier, mostly in enterprise services as the outsourcing operations have declined. HP sales and profits have declined with profit of $8.76 billion in fiscal 2010 on $126 billion in sales dropping to $5 billion in profit on $111.5 billion sales by fiscal 2014. Meg Whitman, CEO, says this should complete the changes and set the business up for future growth in new business areas. She also says HP has not done anything stupid in the last 4 years, alluding to the losses on the ill advised Autonomy acquisition. A big shift is being made in the Enterprise Services Group by setting a rule that no single account should be more than 10%- in 2013 just 3 accounts made up 65% of operating profit. One area of growth is cloud computing related business where it sees revenue growth of 20% for the next couple of years. Other areas include data analytics....

Mario Draghi faces his first test as head of the European Central Bank as Italian bond yields approach 8%. Draghi has limited purchases of bonds of troubled EU countries to 5-10 billion euros each week. This has been sufficient to keep Italian bond yields from going out of control, but high enough to keep pressure on governments in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece to make necessary changes. France, Germany and other countries in the EU are working on new rules for making strict budget discipline legally binding, with enforcement sanctions by a EU budgetary authority. Germany is pushing for the new rules. France's Sarkozy with a legacy of Gaullist reluctance to surrender sovereignty in such matters had resisted such calls in the past, but is moving in the direction of convergence of fiscal policies as the only way to preserve the euro currency and the EU idea alive. Draghi is taking a flexible stance on inflation and lowering rates compared to his predecessor, Trichet. He sees signs of slowing manufacturing activity and credit tightening in Europe as signs that inflation will come down from above 3% to something closer to the 3% target set by the ECB. Economists expect him to lower interest rates for the eurozone to 1% from 1.25%, when the ECB meets in a week. The manufacturing purchasing manager's index went down to 46.4 in November, below the breakeven point of 50, which signals a contraction. Output and orders were down across all of Europe, including Germany. Economists say Draghi has left open the possibility of larger bond purchases if the new rules are made legally binding on eurozone members....

Population experts including Liang Zhongtang a demographer at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, are not convinced the change in the one-child policy in 2013 will have come in time to reverse the trend in increase of elderly population relative to the younger population. Zhongtang says the whole policy should have been removed. According to UN projections China's labor force will lose 67 million workers from 2010 to 2030. During this period the elderly population is expected to increase from 110 million in 2010 to 210 million in 2030. Wang Feng, a demographer at Fudan University in Shanghai, is skeptical about how much difference the new policy will make. He says the figures by population experts showing a maximum of 2 million additional childbirths over the next 3 years, starting about 10 months from now won't make much difference, and these additions will not enter the labor force for another 20 years.
