China's push for globalization is being perceived internationally as an effort to promote its own industries.

Clashes with the U.S. on trade have changed the perception of China in global trade compared to what it was four years ago or in 2008. Tariffs in the U.S. on Chinese imports, slowing foreign investment, inflated property prices, bad debt at banks, and shrinking working age population, are leading to slowing growth which in coming years could drop from 6.1% in 2019. The Belt and Road Initiative is also being perceived differently as it has led to increased in indebtedness of countries in Africa and Asia, debt that cannot be paid back. Much of the ebullient optimism of a few years back is no longer present. The Pew Research Center survey of 34 countries in December 2019 shows about 45% of adults surveyed lacking confidence in China's policy positions in world affairs, according to this report in the WSJ.

Italy's centre left Democratic Party wins a crucial regional election in Emilio-Romagna. Its candidate Mr. Bonaccini, was elected president with 51% of the vote. The Northern League candidate was second with 44% of the vote. The 5 Star Movement won only 3% of the vote. The rapid decline in support for 5 Star Movement is leading to speculation about the future of the coalition of 5 Star and the Democratic party. At one point in 2018 national elections Five Star came in first with 33% of the vote. 
The win gives the coalition government more time to complete its term in office. The League's Mr. Salvini is calling for a snap election hoping to gain from the collapse of 5 Star party's popular support. Started by a comedian 5 Star never was an organized party with a clear message and platform.

A former cricketer who helped Pakistan win the World Cup, is elected prime minister of Pakistan, His party leads in the 2018 elections with 120 seats, the party of Mr. Sharif with its base in the Punjab wins 60 seats, and the party of the Bhuttos with its base in Sind province wins 40 seats. Imran Khan has the support of the military in Pakistan.

Mr. Sharif was ousted as prime minister before the election on corruption charges first revealed in the Panama Papers. 

Pakistan faces challenges of managing its economic relationship with China with debt repayments to China for infrastructure projects leading to a planned IMF bailout in 2019. The relationship with India remains strained over Kashmir, and leads to a situation in which the military runs external affairs of the country. The economic and political issues need to be untangled so that Pakistan and the rest of South Asia can divert resources from defense to economic development.

Problems President Buhari of Nigeria faces problems with the Avenger group in the Niger Delta and disruptions by the group in the flow of oil. As a result Nigeria now lags behind Angola in oil exports. The decline is about 25% in oil production compared to a year earlier.  Years of neglect and frustration in the south are fueling the movement- the Niger Delta people feel oil resources do not benefit their region and benefits going to politicians and people in the government. Buhari has not visited the Niger Delta and a recent trip was postponed leading to a a sense of alienation. The south is Christian and feels discriminated against by Buhari, a Muslim from the north.  Separatist sentiment is growing in Biafra. And the Boko Haram movement has led to 2 million refugees in the north of the country. The result is that Nigeria faces a crisis.

A report by the World Bank is cited showing that in many industries the gap between the leaders in that industry and the companies trailing it is so wide that its as much as 5 times the value added per worker. Based on this the World bank estimates that India can increase its national output rapidly simply using existing knowhow of the best firms in the industry fort those firms that are trailing. This sounds fine on paper but in practice a lot goes into best practice with leadership being hard to replicate easily, and the technology of the leading firms may not be available to the other firms. However its possible for the other companies to increase their productivity if the efffort and determination was present.

Gap stores have experienced steadily declining sales with a failure to keep up with fashion trends and earlier overexpansion. Gap plans to close a fourth of its stores. 175 store closings are planned, with 140 by 2016. Most of the stores closed are in less desirable mall locations. An open letter to Britain's prime minister David Cameron published on Sept. 1, 2013 in Nordic newspapers, Sweden's Dagens Nyheter, Finland's Helsingin Sanomat, Denmark's Politiken, and Norway's Aftenposten, says: "We are deeply concerned that a stout defender of democracy and free debate such as the United Kingdom uses anti-terror legislation in order to legalize what amounts to harrassment of both the newspaper and individuals associated with it." The reference was to the Guardian newspaper which was asked to hand over Snowden document files to the British government. The Guardian newspaper destroyed computer equipment containing Snowden files after being pressured by the Birtish government. The open letter said Cameron's action "were undermining the position of the free press throughout the world." The issue of spying by the NSA has aroused strong sentiment in Germany and the Nordic countries because of memories of the period before 1945....
