Inflation went upto 15.7% in February in Vietnam, the highest in 13 years. The dollar peg of Vietnam's currency helped to boost textile and electronics exports because they were chaeaper than products made in Thailand or Malaysia, the dollar being pegged by the central bank and its being allowed to rise or fall 0.75 a day.But now its boosting inflation as the dollar loses value and Vietnam's central bank widened the narrow band for the dong to 1% from 0.75 %, and the bank says it plans to expand the band to 2% for a rise or fall in one day. The black market rate has devalued the dollar by 3% since March 10, 2008 to 15500 dong to a dollar. Most Vietnamese ae now trying to get their hands on dong and exchanging dollars. The dong's increase in value will help reduce inflation but exporters who get dollars see their revenues in dong fall.

Drug company is using a new tactic for pricingits narcolepsy drug Provigil. It has increased Provigil's price by 28% in 2008, and 74% more expensive than in 2004. he tactic is to shift users to the longer acting deliberately lower priced longer acting version of Provigil called Nuvigil which has patent protection till 2023. Provigil by contrase faces patent expiration in 2012. This is its way of fighting cheaper generics.

Sure Start is a child education program for the early years to provide community centres and services to children started in 1998 under Labor prime minister Gordon Brown and later reduced in funding by the Tories. Efforts to revive the program under Labor party with high degree of child poverty in Britain. Results of the program show children improved in later grades in their learning ability and educational level proficiency. Children from low income households and mothers could benefit from such programs in the US and UK. The effort by the Tories in government in Britain to consign railways to managed decline during the green transition shows how little they understand the potential of rail. In Germany rail passes have cut the cost of traveling by Deutsche Bahn and created new interest in rail travel. Britain not only lacks such a plan, rail is being pushed into decline by the plan to cut 1000 ticket offices. About 90 percent of 750,000 comments about this plan were negative during the consultation period. It is now being scrapped. The Guardian says now is the time to create a renaissance for rail and Labour needs to lead the way just as president Biden has done for revitalizing Amtrak with $91 billion in planned investment.

Here NYT comments on the odd situation of the Queen's Speech in 2023 in which the King announces the legislative priorities of the government in a speech to parliament. In this case he announced the expansion of oil drilling in the North Sea under the Tory government of Rishi Sunak.
