The Chinese market is shifting to more economical cars and to price conscious customers in China's growing middle cllass typicall making about $13000 a year. With the constant pressure to provide more value and better price China's local carmakers are willing to work with slim margins. The Chinese car makers are gaining market share and will continue to gain share in a very competitive price conscious market. In just one year from 2006 to the first 7 months of 2007 the Chineses carmakers increased their share from 26.4% to 30.6%. The Chinese carmakers include smaller makers in addition to the companies Cherry and Geely and these smaller carmakers are also gaining share. The Chinese companies are offering better equiped cars, more fashion and styling, and better prices. one example is a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV selling for $18500 versus a Hover SUV made by Great Wall Motor Company. The Hover SUV selling for $14500 than the comparable Santa Fe which this customer drove through the mountainous border of Sichuan with Tibet. What this also means for foreign carmakers is that there have to be price cuts to move product. Plastic water bottle use surged with a shift to single bottle use of bottled water as a preferred option to using sugar drinks and sodas. In the U.S. this use has surged 284% since 1994, with 67% of the bottled water sold not in jugs but in single use convenience type plastic water bottles.  Manufacturers of plastic water bottles have failed to come up with a technology that makes the kind of plastic that can be easily recycled. Danone's bottled water company Evian brand makes about 30% of its plastic water bottles from recycled plastic and no aims at shifting entirely to recycled plastic by 2025.  Images of bottles filling landfills and hurting sealife have led to consumer opposition to their prolific use. Ocean Conservancy says plastic water bottles are behind cigarette butts and food wrappers the thrid most item washing up on shorelines.  Curbs- Cities in Massachusetts along the coastline are banning their use. New York City is banning the sale in parks, beaches, of these bottles. And the European parliament  is backing laws for member states to collect 90% of these bottles for recycling by 2025. Rate of diabetes is rapidly going up in India. In addition scientists have shown that Indians are more prone to diabetes if they are obese to the same extent as someone from Canada or the U.S. This is called thin-fat diabetes- a higher impaired glucose intolerance- and comes from centuries of body changes following famine in parts of the country from failure of monsoon rains. The obesity rate is going up dramatically and with it diabetes is up significantly.  From 6.4% obese or overweight in 1990, by 2017 18.8% are obese or overweight, according to Health Metrics and Evaluation Institute of the University of Washington. The International Diabetes Federation now predicts 123 million with diabetes in India by 2040. By 2017 diabetes rates went up from 1990- from 5.5% to 7.7% or 63 million people. The major problem in South Asian countries and in China is the growing use of packaged and processed foods, fast food and carbonated drinks. Efforts to prevent the sale of junk foods is a battle being fought between private citizens and the large processed foods companies such as Coca Cola, Pepsi and Nestle. This is the subject of this article with Mr. Verma taking the case to the Delhi High Court facing large opposition. Mr. Verma left his job as a marketing executive as he took care of his sick child. He filed a case in the Delhi High Court in 2010, and faces the opposition of the India Food Processors Association- so far there is little progress.   ...

President Trump's failure to followup on his decision to shut down all flights to China on January 29 with speedy action on preparing for the coronavirus as suggested by some of his advisors is the subject of this article in the NYT.  There were two distractions one was the trade deal with China that was being negotiated, and then the impeachment trial in the U.S. Congress that was set in motion by Democrats. Another problem was the lack of good information about the extent of the virus spread in China and infected case numbers. As it turns out no one really knows the real scale of infections in China. If is was known that there were as many cases in China as there are in the U.S. today this would have resulted in shaking up any complacency in the Trump administration and in the states. Considering the experience of Europe and the U.S. it could be that China had the same number of infected cases as the U.S. does today for a population three times the size. China had a strict quarantine but it also did not realize what it was up against in the first weeks of the crisis in January. It appears now that China, Europe and the U.S. all lost some time from 2-4 weeks before realizing the severe consequences facing each region. This report says one of the vital pieces of information that was learned about infected people in China, was learned as late as the end of February by leaders of a government team looking at the coronavirus threat. It was that seemingly normal healthy people without symptoms but infected by the virus could spread the virus. This meant that this was very, very contagious. The lack of good information played a significant part, adding to the level of complacency in states such as New York and in the Trump administration. It took a week longer for each country to impose a lockdown. In China first Wuhan then the whole country went into lockdown and quarantine. The same process is repeated in Europe and in America as authorites see numbers of infections increasing rapidly without strict controls. First the Lombardy region in Italy around Milan, then the provinces in Northern Italy, followed by a complete lockdown in the country on March 10 as infection spread faster without lockdown and enforcement of lockdowns. Germany and Britain follow Spain and Italy on March 20. France followed Spain in the days after Italy's complete lockdown. Macron ordered the lockdown on March 16 with stringent enforcement. Infectious Disease specialists at Imperial College warned of "unintended consequences for the entire nation" if a lockdown of Britain did not take place. The goal is to limit the spread of infections from rapid to slow as public health systems and economic measures are ramped up in preparation for the crisis. Most countries were lacking the preparatory steps having lost time waiting to see what happens next or analyzing data in the vain hope the virus does not spread.  Bad economic results of lockdowns were initially a concern, but this concern became less important as the coronavirus spread rapidly in Europe. Decision makers in Europe decided that not acting forcefully would lead to equally or worse economic outcomes. Public health systems overwhelmed would diminish public confidence rapidly and lead to equally bad or much worse economic outcomes. The European Union executive body has supported state aid, stimulus action and border controls in this crisis. In America and in Europe the hope is that shoring up the safety net with massive aid to businesses and households would buy time to tackle and overcome the coronavirus through a combination of lockdowns, quarantines, contact tracing, large scale testing and medical technology measures. ZTE of Shenzen, China has 3% global market share and has a new model the F230 which can show streaming video at broadband internet speeds. ZTE will double its cellphone sales to 60 million this year. In the mobile phone business things can change very quickly. The market for mobile phones can change very quickly, is defined by a younger demographic that loves to try new things, and where new technologies and capabilities get incorporated very quickly and in new combinations, navigation, video, broadband, different market segments from the lower end to the upper end especially in developing countries of Brazil, India and China, and the constant competitive churn that brings in new technologies and new companies like ZTE into the market. Upper management at Nokia realizes this as Motorola twice came up with hit models the Star-Tac and the Razr in 1996 and 2005, and each time falling behind after the one time hit. Motorola is even looking at exiting this market. New competitors are in the field with Apple's I-phone in 2007 and with Google and Microsoft developing new software for this market. It requires not just a product hit but a management team and a structure for manufacturing and distribution that is strong and resilient enough to respond to the changing market and to anticipate market trends that are just taking shape and to have the cultural mindset in management at upper and middle levels to deal with huge fast growing markets like India and China, and also Brazil, Russia and other developing countries in Asia and Latin America and Africa where the nature of the demand is different and varies among the different regions also. Nokia has come closest to putting this capability together. It has market share of 40% in this global market with sles in India of 8 million phones a month. There is room for competiton as competitors like Samsung sell about 200 million cellphones a month and are growing at 25% a year. Nokia is also taking a new approach to stay ahead. Its buying smaller companies and developing in-house technology to build its own mobile services business named Ovi. It acquired a number of software companies, acquiring Navteq for $8.1 billion for software on satellite location services. It has its own web portal and and lets wireless providers like Vodafone and Verizon offer their subscribers the option of using portals of Vodafone, Verizon or Nokia's....

Discount airline Azul carried 2.2 millon passengers in its first year. It was founded by David Neeleman of Jet Blue Airways. Azul operates out of Campinas, a city near Sao Paulo, with 14 Embraer jetliners covering 16 cities. Plans are to add 4 desinatios in 2010, and increase the fleet to 21 by end of 2010 and 33 by end of 2011, according to Neelman. Azul now has about 4% market share in Brazil with plane occupancy at 80%.

Activist investors such as Starboard Value hedge fund are pushing Yahoo to sell its Yahoo businesses and keep its investment in Yahoo Japan (35% stake valued at $8.6 billion) and Alibaba (16.5% stake valued at $35 billion). This would mean the sale of the Yahoo brand with 210 million visitors to its website each month. Yahoo's board has tried changing CEO's, and Marissa Mayer in office for 4 years has tried different strategies including acquisitions but failed to make a difference. Yahoo is not able to generate profits from its business the way Google and Facebook have done, and large investors are losing patience with Mayer. Mobile's importance has grown in recent years benefitting Facebook and Google but not Yahoo in generating more advertising revenues. Yahoo's content is seen as commoditized not commanding the advertising revenue of sites that help navigate the internet (Google) or social media sites (Facebook) that offer unique value to users.

Floyd Norris says the announcement by the ECB on Dec. 20, 2011, that 523 banks borrowed 489 billion euros under the newly created Long Term Financing Operation goes a long way towards giving Europe time to address the debt crisis. A major problem is recapitalization of European banks and the ECB's action helps address this problem. This is one of the achievements of the December summit of European leaders, though it was not the way markets had expected. Markets were focussed on large scale bond buying by the European Central Bank or issuance of euro bonds. ECB head, Mario Draghi, aware of widespread opposition in Germany to such proposals made it clear this was not going to happen. The Long Term Financing Operation of the ECB provides unlimited amounts of loans to European banks at 1% for 3 years, and accepts sovereign government debt as well as other types of securities as collateral. The result of this action was to lower the yield on a recent Spanish bond auction to 1.7% for three month bills from 5.1% the prior month. Spanish and Italian banks can now buy government debt of their countries and use the bonds as collateral at the ECB for three year loans at 1%. This Norris estimates will generate profits of about 37 billion euros for European banks from the difference between the ECB rate of 1% and the rate on two year bonds of Spain and Italy of 3.6% and 5.1% respectively for the bond purchases of 489 billion euros- calculated on a spread of 2.5 percentage points over three years. Another infusion of funds from the ECB will occur in February 2012. The new capital infusion gives European banks less reason to reduce lending in the eurozone as they work to meet the higher capital reserve requirements set under new Basel III rules. This is especially important given the austerity measures being implemented across the eurozone countries and Britain to reduce government deficits, and in light of the lower growth expected as a result....

Issues raised by the huge mismatch between revenues and investment for AI. $400 billion estimated investment by 5 Tech firms in 2025 alone with revenue of about $40 billion and huge uncertainty about when AI will produce returns. Articles seen this week of November 17 in the WSJ and NYT on this issue, podcasts, discussions in other media outlets. Could this lead to a dot com bubble type economic crisis? Could that lead to a recession? Alongside these articles another article in the WSJ on Nov 17 shows the benefits small firms get by using AI, benefits which are on the fringes of their business, not essential but with some experimenting firm owners/managers able to tweak AI information for use in business. Nothing significant which firms will pay much money for. The uncertainty is a major factor. Should geopolitics trump all these concerns? Is the competition with China require this scale of investment, and is China following a more utilitarian approach as reported in a WSJ article this month, of investing in AI in a utilitarian way targeting its use in improving manufacturing, improving infrastructure, and not wildly throwing money at experimental uses that are unlikely to yield much result. In geopolitical sense would the country that not only promoted AI but used it efficiently and cost effectively, used it in ways that promote the overall public good, get the WIN. In short it behooves everyone of us to ask hard questions of AI, to dehype the hype, to look for the public good that comes out of this from it's efficient use. To ask the tough questions when $400 billion generates only $40 billion in 2025 and the $3 trillion planned investment over 5 years is half unfunded, is it going to crowd out energy needs for homes and business, push renewable energy targets back, crowd out essential investments in the crumbling aging infrastructure of the US and Europe, crowd out essential investments in education, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, that hold better promise for our People. Will it also put retirees at risk when corporate bonds from retirees money fund the unfunded portion of AI? This means making the political dimension not about migration, settling the illegal migration issue that was meant to be settled a long time back, or about cultural issues that have little day to day impact on our lives which are about groceries, childcare, housing that are non ideological. Making the political dimension not about remote countries that one knows little about except when it affects public safety and health as with fentanyl. Capital allocation decisions to the vital needs of America can then be free of politically induced error, so that it can be subjected to the test of how best it serves the public interest and the people of the Nation. ...
