Geithner and Summers made the case in the financial crisis in Asia in the 1990's that the government makes lousy financial managers. But is it more a political issue as charges from Republicans would be that the government is going socialist. Yet its more the way the word has negative connotations, more than what is to be done in this situation. The reality is that the banks are pretty much in government hands anyway with the amount of taxpayer money at risk, and without any way to get rid of the problem of valuing these toxic assets which nationalization effectively eliminates. The U.S. government has put in its own managers and gone through the cycle of owning and later privatizing banks successfully in the S&L crisis in the 1990's. Its very probable that its not the ideological thing that will carry the day, but the decisive action and the confidence it can build for the financial system. Scott Kupor, head of Office of Personnel Management for federal workforce, says only 7% of federal workforce is under 30 years- he plans to bring younger people into the government. In 2025 383,000 people were laid off and 123,000 hired. Now the government agencies are recruiting new people based on the new priorities of who should be hired, including bringing in younger people who are underrepresented in the federal workforce and can bring new energy and knowledge to the federal agencies. Kupor wants to rebrand the government as launchpad for college graduates and early career professionals,  and bring in people in health care, program management and technology roles, says The Washington Post.

In this school in Pheonix, Arizona, teachers were surprised to see children behind by almost 2 years. The pandemic has turned a growing literacy problem into a crisis.This could be true for other parts of the world, in Europe, India, Latin America, other Asia and Africa too. Students from poorer neighborhoods consistently fare much worse.

When Daniel Henninger of WSJ Editorial Board says in the adjoining article/video that to get anything done with something like the current split Congress a newly elected Republican president would have to operate by executive orders and could get little done, he is referring to the stalled Ukraine aid legislation in the US Congress after passage 70-20 by bipartisan vote in the US Senate. Legislation is stalled in the 2022 newly elected US House of Representatives with a group of Republican Congressmen called the Freedom Caucus seeking to block all legislation if it does not get its way. The now famous line "dead on arrival" line of Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana for legislation passed in the Senate for Ukraine aid. Pew Research looks at the change in the House and explains. It says about 49 members of Congress are part of or aligned to this group. About 71% or 35 of 49 members have less than six years of experience which includes 9 freshmen, compared to 58% or 100 of 173 Congressmen of all other Republican members of Congress. And two thirds of Freedom Caucus are from the South compared to 46% of all other Republicans in Congress. It is striking that only three are from states such as Wisconsin, Illinois and Pennsylvania or a mere 6% for Northeast and Midwest.  ...

Self-compassion as a useful trait. Being on good terms with oneself helps in improving motivation, self-discipline, and reducing anxiety.The result is a calmer, stronger person in the long run. Actually the research goes back to the 1930's and 1940's, with the books of Harry Emerson Fosdick. He called it self-acceptance and showed that by doing this people shouldered responsibility for themselves. This was for Fosdick a part of "being a real person," also the title of one of his books. The difficulty is that then as it is today, the prevailing notion was that if one engaged in self-acceptance we would take less responsibility for ourselves. In 1927 Fosdick was appointed radio minister for the National Vespers Hour. For 17 years his voice went out to the whole nation struggling with self-doubt during a depression and war, from a room in a church tower overlooking the Hudson River in New York city, each time building in people a faith in themselves.

China's State Council announced it was suspending approval of all new nuclear plants. It also announced that China would do a safety review of all existing nuclear plants and plants now under construction. China has 13 nuclear reactors in operation and 26 are under construction. This reverses an earlier decision to move ahead with existing plans. The situation in Japan has created growing concern in China about radioactive spillover across the sea.
