China's premier Wen is critical of China's large state owned banks for blocking reforms. In recent months there is growing sentiment against the large state owned banks because of the large profits made and the low interest on customer deposits for savers. The guaranteed spread between deposit and lending rates is about 3 percentage points giving the banks easy profits. China's largest banks, including Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China and China Construction Bank, show combined profits of $99 billion. These four banks and the Bank of Communications, China Development Bank, Postal Savings Bank, combined control 55% of all outstanding loans in China, and lend mostly to large state owned enterprises.

Its listening without an agenda, because any sort of frame in the mind means one is thinking about one's response is to what someone said, and one needs to listen fully and process what someone says to listen well. He describes it as being allowed entry in that person's world, which helps to build trust.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, Netherlands, rules in favor of the Philippines and rejects China's claims of sovereignty in the South China Sea over some islets in the Spratly archipelago. The claims were made by China on a historical basis. The Hague Court looks at it on the baisis of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and on whether these are islands or land submerged in the sea, or reclaimed reefs.

Supreme Court Justice, Elena Kagan, after her first year at the U.S. Supreme Court. Kagan was appointed by President Obama in 2010. Kagan talked about her experience at the Supreme Court at an Aspen Institute event. Kagan replaced Justice John Paul Stevens. Stevens says Kagan has voted very similiar to how he would have voted on most of the cases. And Justice Ginsberg says about Kagan: "she has already shown her talent as an incisive questioner at oral argument and a writer of eminently readable opinions." Kagan takes writing opinions for the Court very seriously. She described her style at the Aspen Institute event as figuring out how to communicate difficult ideas to people who know little about the subject. An additional aspect of Kagan's writing is that she strives to put things using vivid and colorful language that sticks with people. She has used expressions such as "loosey-goosey," for instance. In her dissent on the campaign finance case she described the supposedly smoking gun found by her colleagues, as: "the only smoking gun here is the majority's, and it is the kind that goes with mirrors." The media tends to compare Roberts with Kagan, the two youngest chief justices on the court, both articulate and vigorous in their opinions, with similiar intellectual backgrounds but taking different positions. Kagan says the most valuable experience to prepare for her new position, was the year she spent as Solicitor General, where she was trying to persuade nine chief justices of the court why they should take a particular position. The difference now being that she must persuade eight justices. The most striking aspect of the two appointments by George W. Bush and Obama, with the absence of a retirement age for the U.S. Supreme Court- as in other democracies such as India- is that both Roberts and Kagan may well be on the Court for 25 years or longer. ...

The pandemic has worsened mental health and created the need to reflect on living a better healthier life. Here he points out that one needs to accept the present, the mess of vulnerabilities he says we find ourselves in, as a natural part of life. To build on a good process that gets us there. This means clarity, simplicity, and concentration so that one does not end up wasting one's energies in different directions. Focus on one or two tasks, what he calls deep focus work, play and connection. Experts say it is not true that there are sudden leaps in performance. Most work is diligently done each step preparing ne for the next step which eventually with patience and persevering on tasks brings results. They only appear to be sudden achievements, but always build on work done before patiently and step by step. This can be seen in the work of recent Nobel prize winners in science who have worked on a new discovery for decades with failures that were overcome, and obstacles that were surmounted with patient work day after day. Stolberg quotes St. Augustine and the Buddha on the importance of close knit groups, companionship and being part of a deep community. When Buddha's disciple Ananda says this is half of the spiritual life, Buddha says in response -  not so, this deep community is the whole spiritual life. Stolberg's new book is "The Practice of Groundedness." Much of this is also seen as important in the Bhagavad Gita and in Christianity- the ideas of simplicity and concentration in life on just one or two tasks, the clarity of mind that comes from this free of tensions.  The Cistercian monasteries all over Europe in the Middle Ages attest to this. One such abbey the restored Abbey of Fontenay in France, embodies this idea. Written about the restored abbey are the words- "The sun brings life to the austere bareness of Cistercian architecture, the way God's light spreads grace through the simplicity loving souls of the monks." ...

Huawei is No. 1 in China and No.3 in Europe in smartphones. For the second quarter of 2018 its smartphone sales surpassed Apple to make it No.2 in the world. Its market share is 13.9% of the world market for the last 12 months, the same as Apple. Huawei was close to making a deal with AT&T to sell smartphones in the U.S. but has run into problems with U.S. regulators. The Justice Department is investigating whether Huawei violated U.S. sanctions on Iran, and the Defense Department is removing Huawei phones and gear from U.S. bases. Most of Huawei's sales gains come from Samsung and other vendors of the Android system smartphones.

The main difference is price Apple phones average cost is $848, Huawei is at $269.

The Netherlands, home of the Maastricht summit, is seeing public opinion shifting to negative opinions about the euro and supporting countries such as Greece. Some experts say the idea was right but the method was wrong. Some polls show a majortiy supporting going back to the old currency, the gilder. An EU survey in 2009 showed 80% of Dutch people supporting the euro. Frits Bolkestein, former EU commissioner for internal markets, points out that Chancellor Kohl insisted on Italy which had not met its debt criteria becoming a founding member of the monetary union, something that made it possible for over-spending Greece to join the euro only 2 years after the 11 founding members. Bolkestein led the party that now runs the Dutch government. His view is that political romanticism overwhelmed sound economic thinking and realities in the formation of the eurozone.

A brief history of AIG which started as an insurer based in China. It was started as a insurer for the growing Chinese middle classes in the nineteen thirties by founder Cornelius Vander Starr. The name then was American Asiatic Underwriters and it had its offices in Shanghai. In an interview in 1935 Starr told Fortune magazine "This money is earned upon a sociological premise that the standards of living and hygiene of the Chinese middle classes are improving, with a consequent decline in the death rate." At the time this company's profits were as large as American insurers. The company was thrown out in the Mao period by 1956, and later its business was revived in China under Mr. Greenberg. This account can be seen in the book by AIG executive Ron Shelp, titled "Fallen Giant."

One U.S. military official describes Boko Haram insurgency as similiar to where Islamic State was 2 years ago. The U.S. military has stopped training Nigerian military units, because of corruption, human rights abuses by soldiers, and infiltration of the Nigerian military by Boko Haram. Another story in the NYT describes the tensions in Nigeria as a former military ruler runs for president on a platform of restoring law and order. Boroko Haram militants are active in the Muslim north and the Nigerian military riddlled with corruption and lack of proper equipment and training has failed to control the militants. Nigeria has a long history of corruption in government and the current government of Jonathan faces the same problems, with oil revenues not going into development of the country- most Nigerians cannot depend on the electrical grid, and infrastructure is in bad shape.

Folk singer Pete Seeger is the most popular folk singer in the U.S. since the 50's, and continues a tradition of folk songs started by Woody Guthrie in the 30's. U.S. Senators Ron Wyden, Mark Udall, and Martin Heinrich, say they strongly disagree with the surveillance bill ratified by their colleagues on the Senate Intelligence Committee. This bill allows the continued bulk collection of Americans telephone records as long as there are rules when the government looks at them. The three senators say this violates the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which has embedded in it the principle that the government has no power to seiize records of individual Americans without evidence of wrongful actions. The senators cite Benjamin Franklin about the dangers of giving up essential liberties for temporary safety and losing both. Their view is that the bill excessively codifies current surveillance activities of the NSA without putting in the necessary safeguards and their view have not been considered, in many cases by a single vote in the Intelligence Committee.

XI Jinping tells China's National People's Congress that "western nations- including the US- have implemented all round containment, encirclement and suppression against us, bringing unprecedentedly severe challenges to development." Addressing the private sector Chamber of Commerce representatives which create significant number of jobs in China he said the Communist Party "has always regarded private enterprises and private entrepreneurs as our own people, and will always support them whenever they run into difficulties." Job creation in China is a challenge with high youth unemployment estimated at about 20%. The pandemic worsened the situation for state finances and for unemployment for migrants, the construction slowdown has added to this. The burden of trillions of dollars of local government debt increased during the pandemic with the central government lacking the resources to help, creating problems in the local economies.  This WSJ report says Xi's speech seeks to present his government's performance in the light of these challenges and future challenges as growth slows in China. The trading relationship with US-EU added to employment and income problems for China's economy and people, yet it had one weakness an over concentration in manufacturing in one country that European and US business placed in one country. The building of a  new supply chain that creates manufacturing in other countries to reduce this concentration, and the limits placed on access to western technologies by China to protect US-EU in competition, places new development challenges for China, which Xi alludes to. In the past China was able to use huge stimulus to tackle its debt by creating more growth that supported this debt creation. The pandemic may finally have reversed this as trillions of dollars of debt have built up, and construction of homes and infrastructure has reached a saturation point. This is the kind of situation that Japan entered in the 1990's after three decades of torrid growth and development rates. History is being repeated as China like Japan is entering a new phase of an aging society. In this sense the challenges China is facing are very different from that of Russia. Creating jobs is a perennial problem in India and China with their large populations and rising aspirations of people after centuries of underdevelopment, something that Europe including Russia does not face in anywhere to a similar degree. in this sense there is more in common between the EU and Russia even when they are in a war, than Russia and China, and China has more in common with India. The struggle in Europe as Cambridge historian Brendan Simms has pointed out in his History of Europe, is more about the balance of power which is the story of European history since the 1450's where no one country has been allowed to act with impunity in invading its neighbors and other countries formed a concerted group to prevent this. Be it France, Austria, Britain or Russia that acted seemingly with impunity. China has little to do with it or Europe's history. President Biden is right to say that the US only competes with China in the economic and business fields, and seeks to find common ground on climate change and food insecurity. The US has supported China throughout the twentieth century since the time of Woodrow Wilson in 1913, around the period when Tsinghua University was established with US help. The US helped China during the Japanese invasion and the Cold War period ended with renewed relations.  ...
