The scale of what can be done with the right amount of capital going into the right places and not the wrong places and with determination to rebuild can only be imagined- Mr. Biden says here that additional $2.5 trillion can be reduced in the deficit by "cutting the wasteful spending on special interests and ensuring the wealthiest Americans and corporations pay their fair share of taxes." It also means vital investments can then be made in education, in infrastructure, science and technologies, and other areas where it is missing today through planned misallocation. ...

Kalanick resigned after increasing pressure, with major investors on the board asking him to resign. Mike Isaac in the NYT says Uber is an example of how some aspects of Silicon Valley culture have caused a public outcry. Greg Ip's 2026 warning about Stablecoins citing 1837-1863 privately issued bank notes fragmented fraud prone and outside the official banking system regulation will be remembered years from now when this crypto (anything but stable in the true sense of the word)  leads to a fianncial crisis. Stablecoins crypto currency that is similar to private banknotes issued between 1837 and 1863 with banks issuing their own currency- fraud widespread even with state laws like todays Genius Act. There were many bank failures and financial crises in that period. The state laws in the 1840's required the banknotes to be collateralized but fraud inevitably creeps in as it might with stablecoins.  Leading to financial crises as private capital shrinks and affects public capital that are US Federal Reserve bank notes we use as dollar bills. Today 84% of illicit activity is conducted using these crypto currencies and only 1% used for transactions. Proponents ( who stand to benefit in some way) call it a new efficient way of transactions. But the facts dont lie. Not only are stable coins used for only 1% of transactions, and illicit activity conducted through crypto coins, but also most of this currency is held overseas not in the US where it is less regulated. Federal Reserve has always questioned the value of crypto currency. Here is what Bank of International Settlements (international institution similar to Federal Reserve) has to say-“Stablecoins attempt to import credibility from public money while operating outside the established settlement system.” -Pablo Hernández de Cos, general manager of the Bank for International Settlements Holding Treasury bills as collateral does not remove the basic problem in is design. Issuers are for profit. The Federal Reserve is not for profit. And the Federal Reserve is part of a whole regulatory structure, Stable . laws have loopholes, and coins lack that kind of regulatory structure , making stablecoins prone to failure, an accident waiting to happen. Tether has $190 billion and Circle has 76 billion for about $300 billion in private capital tied up in this undertaking and posing risks to the Us and world financial system. ...

Von Mark Schieritz of Germany's Zeit Online describes the changes underway following the election campaigns in the U.S., and France, and the Brexit vote in Britain, all signalling the discontent of people left behind by the tech, capitalism, trade and globalization changes of the last two decades. The appeal of one time fringe politicians using racist slogans and divisive rhetoric to appeal to those left behind, appealing to people lacking intergenerational mobility, and without much hope for a better future, is a serious concern. People who are gullible enough, lack college education, or racially isolated so that they are not likely to look carefully at what is being offered in terms of programs and change of competing parties, and likely to overlook the hard and difficult road for corrective course of action, because of anger and pentup fears. Schieritz cites as part of this change the unanimously approved conclusion in its final declaration at the G-20 meeting in Chengdu, China- "The benefits of growth need to be shared more broadly within and among countries to promote inclusiveness." Yet this can be a sort of "too little, too late."  Bankers who are cited in an email going around Wall Street lack credibility with groups on Main Street, to people adversely affected by tech, trade and globalization changes that have been persistently ignored for over a decade, close to two decades. More convincing is the tone of Theresa May, the British prime minister's first statement outside 10 Downing Street- who spoke of the "burning injustices" and her determination to make this a top priority of her government. Still more convincing are the programs to invest $275 billion over 10 years in infrastructure put forward by the leading candidate in the U.S. presidential election of 2016, to provide easier access to public universities and colleges to those left behind, as a sure way to create new jobs and address intergenerational mobility. In fact every leading candidate had made the loss of upward mobility their central plank already in 2015, long before Trump and Sanders started their campaign. The real hope lies in western leaders Merkel, May, and Clinton, all keenly aware students of changes, all women by the way who have sensed the injustice and have the ability to come up with something new and promising for the future, after learning the lessons of the past. ...

Google Alphabet able to raise $80 billion by issuing more stock with the share price only down slightly by about 3%. The huge amounts of money raised have an impact on borrowing rates (which increase) for other borrowers and reduce the amount of capital available for needs other than AI.  About 60% of the capital raised from share issuance, IPO's and other ways of raising capital is going into AI, making capital scarce for everyone else and for the economy's needs other than AI. Education, Healthcare, Infrastructure will all suffer. Infrastructure that is crumbling in the US and some of it from the middle of the last century needs to be rebuilt. AI is sucking up all these funds meant for infrastructure projects meaning that much of it is put further away in time. DJT and Biden promised infrastructure projects would get first priority. It happened even in Gujarat but was corrected in time by Mr. Modi.  This analysis in Indian Express says the reason the vote share of 36% led to 104 seats in 2019 and only 66 seats in 2023 is that a lot of the votes were concentrated not all over Karnataka as in 2019 but only in Old Mysore and in Bengaluru, and also in south Karnataka where it cut into JDS party votes without winning seats. Under Obrador Mexico reached a level of living with organized crime gangs after decades of war against these gangs. The US needs support from Mexico for its border policies and control of border. Obrador was a son of a provincial shopkeeper and spent little time outside Mexico.  Sheinbaum sees him as her mentor after work supporting migrant welfare in California with Carlos Imaz, during a period when she finished doctoral work at UC Berkeley and Stanford. Her father was a chemical engineer and her mother a biology professor. Her grandparents were of East European Lithuanian and Bulgarian origin. Sheinbaum says she follows Obrador's principles, yet it will be Claudia that will run the government. Her policies include setting up 100 industrial parks for Mexico's development, and setting up professional police services to control crime throughout Mexico's different states. ...

Iran's oil production filling up existing storage leading to oil well shutoffs May 2026. Tankers near oil fields are used as storage as Iran faces prospect of filled up storage tanks and ships at sea at some point in the next few weeks. It has slow throttled production, increased storage, yet with no oil getting out of Hormuz straits Iran will at some point in the next couple of weeks have to shutdown some of the oil wells. The oil tanks cannot be monitored for storage level and their is existing storage in refineries and other places making it difficult to say precisely when but it could be in the next couple of weeks. This plays a part in Iran's thinking looking for ways to settle the conflict. US insists on getting all nuclear material out of Iran as an indispensable condition and the full and entire reason for the war not anything against the Iranian people. It is a basic idea- non-proliferation on nuclear weapons. Why in the Middle East- the answer is that for 5 decades there are wars in the Middle East, many small nations created by the British and the French who take no responsibility today, and the prospect of spread is real, sectarian conflicts for centuries, and a situation worse than in the Balkans where World War I started. The region extends from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, each nation destroyed by 5 decades of war including many Americans, Russians Europeans dead.  Costs of War Project at Brown University estimates are that 4.5 to 4.7 million people died in these wars. The US is not a colonial power like the British and the French, the Dutch. It seeks no oil as it is self sufficient, and it seeks no strife or involvement in the centuries old saga of the sectarian religious conflicts in the Middle East, having settled its own between Catholics and Protestants in the 17th century so that the Industrial Revolution and Scientific Revolutions could take place to create the Modern World of science, medicine, and industry we know today. Many of the nations of the Middle East seem averse to whole heartedly embracing the European contributions in this achievement as China, India, and America have done, in the process changing how their people think and live, and strive daily to further these achievements. ...

US-Swiss trade deal November 2025 for 15% US tariff in exchange for $200 billion in investment in US. This includes access to Swiss markets for the US. The agreement also will let in dairy products and chocolate to the US at 15% tariff to reduce cost of living concerns. Swiss dairy producers and chocolate makers are likely to bear most of the 15% tariff burden because of higher margins. The $2000 rebate to all Americans from tariffs is a good idea of the DJT administration to give Americans protection from the smaller share of the tariffs that are passed on to consumers that are not borne by the producers exporting to the US. In a glut market for potatoes in Europe this is what happens. From $600 euros a ton in 2023 to zero for the price of potatoes in the spot market  in Belgium in 2026. Europe has asurplus f 5 million metric tons of potatoes of the kind used to make french fries. In the past it could be shipped as exports to the US. Not anymore US has tariffs to protect US farmers in Idaho and other states. An Idaho potato maker financed Micron in the 1960's which now is a major chip maker nearing valuation of 1 trillion dollars in the stock markets. You have this situation where a thousand tons of potatoes stacked 15 feet high in a Belgian warehouse is dumped back into the ground. The Belgian farmer D'haeyere took a loss of $160,000 euros on soil, seedlings, fertilizer and labor. He is planting only 17 acres for 2027 down from 170 acres he planted  this year. Belgium is the largest exporter of french fries in the world.

Law firms indirectly adding to the cost of doing business with outrageous per hour rates ($2500 per hour?), costs sure to be transferred to consumers and buyers in today's Cost of Living crisis. Another instance of price gouging in a different context that pushes up costs and prices, something Harris talked about in the debate.

There is a 30% jump in lawyer fees from $190,000 to $250,000, for junior associates since 2018. It is just not sustainable. Part of the problem is  hourly rates and companies such as Shell are looking for alternative arrangements- ones that make the final costs predictable and transparent.

The Hindustan Times provides this look at the construction of a new 1000 bed hospital in Bandra Kurla complex exhibition area of Mumbai  that will be used for isolation of coronavirus cases. The hospital will be ready in time to tackle an expected further surge in cases in Mumbai by the end of May. The hospital will be equipped to handle another 5000 beds says the Mumbai municipal authority, MMRDA. Several hospitals are being built such as this one to tackle the surge in cases as Mumbai has about 25% of cases in India of coronavirus.

The anti immigrant Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer wins 46% of the vote. Van Der Bellen is for an open Europe and is pro Europe. The election is seen in Germany as "lifting a great burden off of our shoulders," in the words of Sigmar Gabriel. This is important for the future of Europe as France, Netherlands and Germany face major elections in 2017.
