The partition of Iraq would have lead to increased ethnic conflicts and civil war which is what all sides in Iraq recognized. Sunch partitions lead to ethnic cleansing and even more hostilities. As Senor says here the partition would have involved expelling Iraqis from their home on a large scale. A bigger wave than the refugee situation before this from ethnic strife as it would now be official. Compare this to the partition of India. Once its official a huge wave of expelling begins and an official kind of ethnic cleansing occurs as hotilities increase and each of these partitioned areas starts to get outside help from neighboring countries and an arms race in the area begins and new fears are aroused. No question things were bad but it its to the credit of all the Iraqi parties and leaders that they had the good sense to act in the right way. As Senor asks what do you do with Kirkuk which is majority Kurdish but has a large Sunni population. Its also to the credit of Bush advisors and General Petraeus that they continued to persevere when things looked very dim. A further inflammation in Iraq would not affect people in Des Moines or Biden's Delaware so when things get really nasty its easy for an expert or politician in the USA or Europe to take some policy action and then leave leaving that region in Asia or Africa to bear the consequences....

Ivan Rogers, Britain's former ambassador to the European Union says ideas about liberation are fantasies, just fantasies. There would be endless negotiation on every issue. After 2 years of negotiations most of the tough questions about Britain's future trading relations with the European Union remain unanswered.

Some just want to get on with the job, including Mrs. May. But the tough questions are not going away as a cross party group in parliament seeks to take control of the process and call for an extension under Article 50 for the March 29 deadline. In addition to the intra party divisions and lack of cooperation from the Labor party, there are doubts in Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland about future relations.

David Kostin, Goldman Sach's U.S. equity strategist and his prediction of the S&P 500 at 1250 at the end of 2012. The S&P was at 1421 on April 1, 2012, the highest it has been since May 20, 2008. In his research note Kostin says that over the longer term the stock market will offer opportunities after a more normal growth environment is reestablished. This is similiar to the view held by John Bogle, founder of Vanguard. For the short term- the 2012-2013 time frame Kostin sees tactical risks, and results below average. The reason he gives is low economic growth and the large degree of uncertainty. The situation in Europe shows slowing to no growth and more deficit problems, and the sanctions on Iran pose risks for oil prices.

Deepwater oil field drilling rigs some of the most modern computer controlled ones run $650 million are in great demand and one Norwegian supplier of drilling rigs has anticipated the demand for advanced deepwater drilling rigs which the major oil companies had not invested in and is now in a position to charge $600,000 a day for the advanced rigs he has ordered 3 years ago as the deepwater drilling took off in places like offshore Angola. Earlier this Norwegian had anticipated the shift to long haul shipping of oil to places like India and China from Iran and offshore Africa.

This view in the Economist shows that president Trump actually represented the instincts of the Republican party base by 2018- anti-immigrant, anti-elitist, and to the right on social issues. As a result it says it is no surprise that he has taken over the Republican party. As the elections for Congress get closer most candidates are trying to get Trump's support and many of the older senators and Congressman from the earlier period of the party are retiring. It cites polls showing Trump has support of 85% of the Republican party base. In 2018 Mr. Trump appointed new members of his cabinet who more closely represented his views on China, Iran, NATO, and business issues. Remaining party leaders such as Mr. Romney running for Senate seat from Utah are now seeking and getting Trump's endorsement. The Republican National Committee is also run by Trump supporters. On issues of foreign affairs Trump has combined alternate shifts between demands and pragmatism in relations with China, Iran, and other countries on trade, politics, coming up with a new way international relations are tackled. Part of the reason for their appeal is the nature of the intractable problems such as the imbalances in trade, nuclear weapons, and the idea that an alternative approach might work when other approaches have failed.  On social issues such as issues facing workers in globalization and free trade the parties to the left in the U.S. and countries in western Europe have failed to deliver, leading to the appeal of Mr. Trump, Brexiters, National Front in France.  The immigration issue has also worked against the socialist parties.  In Britain dissatisfaction with Theresa May and hard core Brexiters is growing, leading to Labor Party getting 40% of the vote in the recent election. Suggesting that the changes induced by the Brexiters and the Trump administration may lead to other changes in the future that may shift the focus back to basic issues and delivery on infrastructure, health and education which are fundamental for the future.   ...

This report in the NYT by Halbfinger and Kershner shows a Israel that is divided in its views about prime minister Netanyahu. In early 2018 with the police report on the investigation into Mr. Netanyahu on campaign finances, half of Israelis support Netanyahu, with the other half thinking that Netanyahu should resign. Mr. Netanyahu has dismissed the investigation as full of holes like Swiss cheese. His supporters see it as part of a left wing conspiracy including state prosecutors and police. Supporters of Netanyahu see him as having improved Israel's security in its region, people who oppose him see him as being too divisive, using divisive rhetoric to improve his own position.  Younger voters in particular have a distaste for divisive politics practiced under Netanyahu, which extends to the supporters of Israel in America, and the policies leading to delaying of the peace project.  That peace project is also seen as part of the nation's mission to seek peace with its immediate neighbors, an unfinished project for Israel as a nation. After many years in office Netanyahu's party lacks the dynamic vision needed and it now appears only to see remaining in office as its goal, according to this NYT report. This is happening at a time when a larger centrist constituency is developing in Israel as most of the moderates are outside government. ...

Florida Governor Bob Graham 1979-1987 work in investing in education boosting per pupil spending and investment in Flordia university system is similar to California Governor Pat Brown 1960-1968 who helped build the Cal State University system. Bo Graham covered the Kennedy-Johnson period of the sixties to the turn of the century, retiring in 2003 after serving in the US Senate for 18 years. His early upbringing was on a family farm in Florida. He is known for his effort to take on the roles of ordinary Americans for 100 days when he ran for public office. This period is a reminder of the changes in the democratic system, business and the economy since then with influence of lobbyists in Congress, tech monopolies, and the financial industry leading to crises since 2009, and wars in the Middle East that dissipated the Nation's resources that should have gone into replacing dilapidated infrastructure.

The new White House Press Secretary is a decent choice. She is 27 years and yet brings plenty of experience with youthful enthusiasm- graduating from Catholic college St Anselm in New Hampshire, she joined the 2016 White House as an intern. She then worked as a speechwriter and assistant press secretary, preparing high profile briefings for Mary McEnany the last DJT press secretary. In 2022 she ran for Congress from New Hampshire, losing to Chris Pappas. In January 2024  she came back as press secretary for the DJT campaign.

Some key features of the Iraqi effort to retake Ramadi are evident in the effort by new prime minister to keep out Shiite militias called Popular Mobilization Forces from Sunni areas. The effort to retake Ramadi involves American air support and retrained Iraqi units after the disasters in 2014 when Iraqi army units ill equipped and poorly led fled the area. Ian Buruma sheds light on the efforts of prime minister Hatoyama of the DPJ party to create a East Asian Community and bring Japan and China closer in economic and political ties. This failed because of the tensions with N. Korea and the Obama administration's opposition to this move- which did not give the young Japanese prime minister the same opportunity to exercize his electoral mandate that was given to the young American president. The Obama administration's pivot to Asia is seen by China as keeping America's post war role as the dominant power ensuring peace in Asia. The election of a nationalist Abe from the LDP party which has promoted strong defense and political ties with the U.S. and supports the U.S. traditional postwar role is consistent with this policy. The result says Buruma is to block the development of new closer ties between Japan and China which reflect the new dynamics in Asia. Buruma says Japan looked to China during the centuries before the modern period, with both countries sharing a Buddhist civilization and culture, and depending on how one sees it the conflict in the period between the two wars would be the pattern or the aberration in the relations between Japan and China. Many Japanese are wary of further tensions between the two countries. Buruma provides an alternative look at how relations between China, Japan and the U.S. could evolve in Asia which would provide a basis for constructive cooperation. ...

How Obama appealed to both sides, the religious and the secular in Turkey, choosing his words with care. About 275,000 people and 100,000 children are in the war torn area in northern Syria. The U.S. had called on Russia to stop the bombing campaign, but Secretary of State Kerry failed to persuade Russia to commit to a ceasefire.
