Soda Sales in Mexico Rise Despite Tax
Wall Street Journal 05/04/2016
Eduardo Porter of the NYT reflects on what happened in Brazil in chaos after soaring popularity of Lula as long as the commodities boom lasted, with no real foundations. The extremes of populist policies and of free markets without mindfulness of the risks can be dangerous to the livelihoods of the vast majority of people in the Americas. As Brazil struggles, Mexico with the opposite model struggles from lack of good management, Argentina emerges from decades of experimenting with extremes in either direction, and the U.S. mulls over its future direction in the general election of 2016, there is a moral for the Americas extremes without mindfulness are dangerous. Cruz and Sanders offer different versions of direction. Cruz and Sanders a version of policies too far in one direction, Trump channeling anger but lacking any clear statement of policy. The fate of nations and peoples hangs in the balance- needed is mindfulness and thoughtfulness in taking the path forward, clear of illusions that it will be easy going forward from mistakes in the past.

Vandehei says most of the ideas used in the campaigns of Trump and Sanders are not new, and the effects of the 2008 financial crisis have been covered widely in the press. That the elites have ignored it, and Tump and Sanders have capitalized on this, does not mean America cannot come up with its own constructive ideas to solve existing problems than take risks going into the unknown. Both Trump and Sanders have drawn attention to the problems of poverty, working class Americans, trade, and wages, but lack constructive programs that would work. A 45% tariff on imports would not work, and poverty is bettter tackled with a growing global economy and private sector initiative. He says he is from two small towns, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Lincoln, Maine, and knows what it is like for ordinary Americans struggling to make it.

Emilio Lozoya is replaced as CEO in May 2016 by a close associate of finance minister Videgaray, Gonzalez Anaya, who is expected to come up with $5.8 billion in spending cuts. Inefficiency and wasteful spending was not checked early enough at Pemex folowing the collapse in oil prices- leading to a liquidity crisis. A report in the WSJ cites a Pemex official who says Pemex was down to $8 million in cash at one point in Jan. 2016. The Mexican government reduces taxes for Pemex and pays suppliers during the liquidity crisis. Anaya cites one example of wasteful spending, an order to buy computers that was cancelled saving $171 million. Anaya says the computers should have been leased. that was cancelled resulting in savings of $171 million, which he says should be leased.

The boom years of the Lula administration supported by high commodity prices covered up serious problems in infrastructure, basic public services, education and health care. The collapse of commodity prices exposed real weaknesses in Brazil's economic structure. With this came a realization of the deep seated corruption of the ruling elite.

Following the problems of Valeant Pharmaceuticals with shares dropping 14% in one day, this report in the WSJ looks at the risks Elon Musk is taking with personal loans using collateral in Tesla to support Solar City. Musk says its not a house of cards because he is only doing this because he feels he should take some of the risk when shareholders are taking risk. Yet the shareholders are closely connected with venture capital companies in which Elon Musk has connections and relatives all interconnected in this arrangement, creating an unusual and risky arrangement, says WSJ

DreamWorks Animation has taken impairment charges and incurred losses in 2014. Results have deteriorated since the losses on the film Rise of the Guardians in 2012, and recent losses on Penguins of Madagascar. With the animation studio's main talent CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg in China and other places in a frantic bid at expansion into related businesses, and not fully engaged creatively, the studio has lost focus, say insiders.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
