Business Week's Michael Lewis has some serious questions and a message for investment bank Goldman. His questions- ACA was incompetent which is why it was chosen as CDO (collaterized debt obligation) manager. ACA was chosen by Goldman precisely because it did not know what it was doing and lost $900 million in the process. So too IKB, the dull witted German bank which lost $150 million. Goldman did not lose $100 million on the Abacus deal because Goldman was shorting the subprime market by March 2007 the time of the Abacus deal. Knowing this requires transparency of all dealings of Goldman's proprietary trading desk to understand real losses. Fab Tourre, the 27 year old Frenchman, is just a kid in this game. The real name behind this is Jonathan Egol. Who is this guy who clearly knew the subprime market was doomed in 2006 in remarks he made at the time.

Equity markets in Europe and the U.S. are likely to see some of the 62 trillion yen, or $630 billion, which the Bank of Japan plans to add to holdings of banks and households in two years 2013-2014. A senior advisor to Deutsche Bank, Thomas Mayer, says equities of Germany, France and Britain are likey to see interest from Japanese investors, as are bonds and equities of the U.S. Japanese companies such as Toyota and consumer product companies such as Sony and Panasonic will now be able to better compete on price against their S. Korean, American and European competitors.

IHS reports show the cost of making the Galaxy S 4 smartphone with 16 gigabytes of flash memory is about $244. This is 15% more than the cost for the Galaxy III and 17% more than Apple iPhone 5 with 16 gigabyte memory. Higher cost is due to better sensors, a better processor, and larger full high-definition display for upgrades. Samsung plans to launch the new phone in April 2013 in 155 countries. Unlike Apple Samsung does its own manufacturing providing it an edge in hardware capabilities.

The British proposal by Prime Minister Brown to inject capital directly into the banks by taking ownership stakes in them is a more direct approach to the problem or undercapitalized banks than the US proposal of buying up unwanted or toxic assets. On the other hand the problem of mortgage assets and abusive lending practices and faulty securitization was an American problem which spread afterwards by the spread of those securities in global financial markets, but American banks probably have a larger share of these assets and foreclosures are a bigger problem in the USA. Still a direct injection of capital into the banks remains a direct solution of the problem with immediate effect and the US is considering Treasury doing a similar action.

Natural gas prices declined to $3.144 a million British Thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange for January delivery. Natural gas prices dropped sharply by 30% in December 2014. Earlier forecasts of $4.50 per million BTU by 2014 end underestimated the decline in natural gas prices in the U.S.

Mr. Trump told Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar at the White House he is disappointed with the way Brexit has evolved in the three years since he supported Brexit during the election campaign. Trump said "it is tearing the country apart. Its actually tearing a lot of countries apart."  After a series of votes in the British parliament Trump told reporters he gave May some negotiating advice. "I gave the prime minister my ideas on how to negotiate. I think she would have been successful., she did'nt listen to that." So what happened? What advice did Trump give on negotiating? There are only some hints on this. Theresa May told the BBC in an interview after Trump's visit to London in July 2018- "He told me I should sue the E.U. -not go into negotiations., Sue them."  Trump made a prediction a day after the referendum to Leave saying "the E.U. is going to break up." This was at the time of the financial crisis in the European Union with problems in Greece, Spain and Portugal. Since then the economies of these countries revived. Spain has 3% growth for three years even though it faces fresh elections. In his 2000 book "The America we Deserve" Trump pointed out his sense threat the U.S. should pull back from the E.U and save millions of dollars annually. In recent years he has suggested that the E.U was "a foe"  and "it was formed as a consortium so that it could compete with the United States." The problems in Europe happened in the period 2016-2018 with divisions emerging on the issue of immigration. This wave of immigration was a result of Arab and African conflicts and lag in Africa between development and the rapidly rising population. Chancellor Merkel was ill prepared to handle this wave of immigration and in retrospect her policy did little to address the roots of the problems of immigration from North Africa, a policy later adopted when popular support for immigration of this kind and scale declined. It affected the vote for Brexit playing into deep seated doubts about the benefits of EU membership in parts of Britain.  Mr. Trump supports no-deal Brexit which was defeated by large margins in the British parliament and lacks support across all parts of society, business and political parties in Britain. Trump own sense that Brexit has divided many countries and his dialogue with the Irish prime minister must show an awareness of the views of Ireland about the hard won peace and E.U. borders in Ireland.     ...

Declan Walsh describes the role of the military in Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan which has marginalized political parties and democratic process. The shift in Pakistan towards a democratic state shows the limits of the military's role in politics. Throughout Asia and Latin America, beyond just the Arab world, S. Korea, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, the movement is towards democratic processes of government. As political parties mature a more centrist position was adopted in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Islamist parties in Turkey, a similar trend is likely in the rest of the Muslim world as political parties are able to mature and deliver in economic terms and improving living conditions. The Saudis and UAE may be able to deliver in economic terms because of oil prices and supplies, each country and the people in the region has to determine how it will tackle its economic problems and move forward or fall behind in a rapidly developing global economy. Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey and India are no exception....

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry is interviewed by The Hindu. Ali Sabry says he is "very, very confident" about the Adani Group's investments in Sri Lanka's renewable energy potential, and any drop in Adani stock value is not affecting the projects. Sabry says the Adani Group is already investing in its projects, which include the $700 million Colombo West Container Port Project. So right now, what we are interested in with India is how to collaborate and how to integrate with the Indian economy, particularly with South India, in terms of investment, people to people connection, more tourists coming in. A NYT series on the forgotten men and women of the second world war includes stories on black women breaking the logjam of 17 million pieces of mail in Britain ready to be sent to allied soldiers in Europe. Read about Captain Adams from South Carolina who is the first black woman in the officer corps of the American Women's Auxiliary Corps, part of the American Army by 1944. By 1942 General Dwight Eisenhower had already found an equal role for black men in the war and American forces. He also included a role for black women in roles such as that facing Captain Adams whose unit made critical contributions to getting the mail to allied soldiers fighting in Europe. This included sorting mail in Birmingham, England, in difficult conditions, and in France as the Battle of the Bulge took place in France with heavy casualties, and after the war ended in 1945 in Rouen, France. Mail meant life and death correspondence between loved ones when there were no phones with connections we have today. In this sense it was a role that had great significance. These women worked 7 days a week, round the clock, in rotating shifts. It was an activity that meant as much to the army as anything else. ...

The difference between the banks and the oil companies. The banks are doing better because of support from the central bank, the U.S. Federal Reserve. The oil companies are affected by low oil prices of less than $20. Shale oil companies in America are the worst hit unable to operate at prices this low. The oil deal negotiated by president Trump to get initially 9.7 million barrels a day off the market and with other cuts in supply from Venezuela and Iran about 20 million barrels a day, has not taken the pressure off oil prices, as demand has fallen off even more by over 30 million barrels a day.
