After a chemical attack by the Assad government in Syria in 2013 Trump urged president Obama not to make air strikes on Syrian government targets, saying jobs, healthcare and other priorities should be remembered. The NFP Front populaire alliance of socialist parties wins the most seats 200+ in early projections in the National Assembly in France. Macron's Ensemble party comes in second with about 150 seats, and the RN National Rally third with about 130 seats. This is the most closely watched election in European Union in decades. Voter turnout was 67% up from 48% in the last election. Only the Front Populaire called for investment in the French economy- not the Macron Ensemble or the Le Pen RN party- and taking serious cost of living action for gas prices, food prices, transport prices, for the struggling lower and middle classes in France. With corporations and the super rich paying their fair share- also a modest share- investment of $140 billion is planned for infrastructure, manufacturing, jobs and wages, climate change action in the French Nation.

Le Monde looks at falling living standards across the UK. It looks at Essex and Brentwood and other towns outside the metro region of London. The 2009 financial crisis caused by banks was followed in four blows of Cameron's decade of austerity and of not investing in Britain, the upheavals of Brexit, the once in a century pandemic, and now inflation, causing a depressing sight of all lower and middle social classes struggling to make a living. 

Since 2007 real wages in UK have fallen by 3.5%. Between 1970 and 2008 wages grew by 33% every 10 years.

The poorest 10% in Britain have 22% lower purchasing power than the poorest 10% in France, says Torsten Bell of Resolution Foundation, author of report "Stagnation Nation."

The 32 year old leader of the movement called Five Star started by comedian Beppe Grillo in Italy, Luigi Maio, now leads the effort to form a government in Italy. The M5S party party won 32% of the vote in Italy's 2018 elections. The Northern League a far right party based on the region near Milan led by Matteo Salvini, came in second. In combination with Berlusconi's Forza Italia it has 37% of the vote, not enough to form a government on its own. The M5S is a centre left party which shares euroskepticism with the Northern League, but remains a centrist party that has little in common with the Northern League and Berlusconi. The FIve Star Movement sees fresh elections as the only next step as it sees no chance of a coalition with the far right parties.

Prince Salman's efforts to launch an IPO of Saudi Arabian National Oil Company faces resistance from Saudi bureaucrats. Prince Salman wants to reduce the country's dependence on oil revenue, and hoped to use the IPO generated $100 billion to make investments in other industries. Saudi technocrats see risks in the plan- as costing consumers billions of dollars in higher gasoline prices, legal risks and public scrutiny. The IPO has been pushed back to 2021. Large new investments such as solar generation hub also face passive resistance in the bureaucracy. New investments policies have led to a Saudi recession in 2017, and reduced investment and consumer spending. Prince Salman sees it differently, once telling Theresa May of Britain that even if he got 50 of the 100 things he wanted done, that would be 50 not done otherwise. Salman has a disdain for the bureaucracy and has tight control over the country. He has led popular social changes such as letting women drive and taking away the power of religious police to make arrests. The Economy Minister has slowed down a plan to sell state assets such as government owned hospitals,airports, because conditions are not ideal. A plan to invest $7 billion in Uber was shelved. Aramco chairman Mr. Falih has reduced the size of investmetns including for the solar energy generation project. A plan to have ARAMCO listed on the New York Stock Exchange preferred by Prince Salman has been changed with advisers suggesting the London Stock Exchange as a place with lower risks of law suits under U.S. tort laws. Saudi executives at ARAMCO also pointed out that to reach the $2 trillion valuation that the Prince has in mind for ARAMCO the company would have to sell gasoline to Saudis at market rates, tripling oil prices in the kingdom -costing consumers $98 billion. The advisers believe it is more prudent financially to raise debt. Under that plan ARAMCO could raise debt to buy the Public Investment Fund's (PIF) 70% stake in state owned chemicals company Saudi Basic Industries Corp. which would infuse PIF with $70 billion, almost as much as generated by a IPO for ARAMCO. On solar energy Mr. Falih lowered the plan from 1500 gigawatts to 200 at a cost of $200 billion. Under a new plan this is at 60 gigawatts from solar and wind with 70% produced by the Public Investment Fund, the state's investment fund.   ...

Real estate prices are declining in Australia, with signs of overbuilding. Growing immigration, a commodities boom with higher demand from China, slow construction and foreign investors had pushed home prices higher. This led to a decrease of 2-6% in home prices in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne, according to RP Data. Home construction in Melbourne increased by 40% since 2006, according to Australia's Bureau of Statistics. Analysts point to an oversupply of homes in Melbourne. Google has launched a new project using technology to let users tour art galleries around the world. This was launched at Tate Britain in London. This is part of Google's latest interactive online resource called Art Project. A Wall Street Journal poll of economists shows that China's growth is slowing to around 8%. Because the economy grew rapidly in the first half of 2010, the full year growth is expected to be 11.1%. Workers at the VW plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee voted 712 to 626 in Feb. 2014 to reject membership in the UAW union. This makes it more difficult for the union to make inroads in the Southern states. In an unusual step VW- cooperating with the IG Metalls union in Germany- let union organizers into the plant for over a week and cooperated with the UAW to setup the election. VW wanted to setup a works council, a committee of employees which gives management feedback for running of the plant, similiar to ones operating in Germany.

With the low popularity ratings of the LDP's Taro Aso, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) led by Ichiro Ozawa was considered afavorite to win elections in September, 2009. Now even the DPJ is hit by scandal as Ozawa's political secretary was indicted for taking $355,000 in illegal donations from Nishimatsu, a building company. Ozawa promised to stay on to fulfill his dream of setting up the first non-LDP government in postwar Japan. He was himself at one time a leader in the LDP till he joined the Opposition parties.
